Exactly the same thing happened with me also. Try to use some good quality hardy cardboard. One thing you can try is after applying the paste, dry it completely and then put some weight on it. Hope it will work.

It's Walll Putty. It is used to provide smooth base to the wall surface. I got it free during my home renovation. You can search it on Amazon or Flipkart.
You can also use Fevicryl Mouldit clay instead of Wall Putty. It is easily available in Amazon and flipkart. Just search it by name Fevicryl mouldit. 900g will cost 250.
