I started my small business by setting up a tent at farmers markets and community events. It’s a lot more work than you’d expect, so it has to be a deep passion in order to keep it going. Maybe try out a community market or two in your local area to test the waters?
I managed a little organic grocer spot on Maui that’s very similar to what you’re describing. I will say it is the opposite of passive income… you would have to be so involved all day every day for years. Just something to consider. ❤️
I think that you would be wonderful at developing a book about hosting parties, dinners and fun activities. You already do this and show all your fabulous ideas on your channel. 🤗🤗🤗
You seem so calm about rats in your house. Rats carry so many germs and I would worry about Max. Lisa Rhinna had a huge rat in her house. She said it's because she leaves her sliders open all the time.
Glad you are feeling better. I’m so glad you got your purchases from Maine delivered safely. Can’t wait to see how you style them. Oh, and I love the shade of lavender on you. Purple (of all shades is my fav color.) 💜🦋 LOVE the idea of the store. Go for it!!!!
If you and Jordy ever move to the Nashville area, and you’d want to do your general store attached to a coffee shop, let me know😁 I’ve been talking about doing a coffee shop that doubles as a recording studio/live event space for acoustic music and adding the general store type of vibe sounds so fun!!
@@tulipsinjulyI think the point was to *not* run it when she’s filming ads but have it on the rest of the time especially when it’s humid from showering.
use your cooking course, and set up a business where you could have meal kits from recopies that you have put together, and then you could also have other things needed to host a dinner at home, like flowers, and desserts, and then you could also have things made locally like pottery that could be gifts along with the other things you talked about. you could start it as a home business until you're ready for a storefront.
Hi Michel. From experience with rats… you probably need to have an exterminator come and check your home and see where the creatures are coming in and have it sealed up so you don’t continue to have the problem. If you have caught two already there is likely an access somewhere. Sometimes one could sneak in through an open door but more than one is not common and you may have a breech somewhere.
In Ireland we have a store like this that's become a very small chain. It's called avoca, groceries gifts life stuff and the best coffee. It's super popular
Hi Michel. Thank you for such a lovely, festive vlog! Re your general/ gift store idea, maybe in the first instance you could find a cute, local coffee shop which would let you have some space to stock your goods inside their existing premises in exchange for a profit sharing arrangement? That could be a good way to benefit from existing footfall and find out what is popular with locals but without having to commit to all the up front costs of opening your own store straight away. ❤
Love it! I used to make handmade cards, and selling them in coffee shops and small grocers gave me a great idea of what people liked and purchased, versus which ones never got touched! Such valuable info with very little investment, commitment or risk!
A General Store sounds like a perfect future career path for you! There’s a store in my city very similar called The Mercantile that sounds very similar to what you’re talking about. Lots of those staples like oil and tea etc but they’re a little fancier then you would find at a grocery store and more giftable, plus handmade items and some unique kitchen items and they always have seasonal items. They’re so fun to visit because they have such a variety that is always changing and it’s a perfect shop for finding gifts at or just splurging for yourself. Sounds very you!
Please hire a company to come check your house. If there is one there are 100 at least. I had this issue in my previous rental. They have taken over the crawl space. Please take this very seriously
The small dehumidifier is good but won't be enough to remove that mass amount of moisture that a bathroom experiences. You would need to either open a window or better yet reconnect your extractor fan or it will eventually mold.
The general store you’re describing is an epicerie in France. Just add fresh baked daily bread, and have a deal for fresh pizza night every Friday. Done! 👩🍳
For your shop idea, you could have vendors pay for a booth or shelf spot/charge a small percentage for products sold rather than you buying and upselling :) that way you can pay towards the lease! you can also sell items that you just love to pay towards the cost too
One idea for the lobster 🦞 card is making it bigger with a mat behind it and making it more bougie 😊. If you have mice, try the tomcat glow green 💚 glue traps they caught every mouse i had!
I have to move my monstera every year to make way for my tree. I move it to the upstairs hallway, it doesn't upset it, but the lighting is very similar. They can cope with shade, as in the wild they are at the bottom of rainforests
I always look forward to when you post Michel! I hope your mouse issues are eradicated soon, humanely of course! I love what you and Jordy are doing with your new home! It looks so cozy! ❤️ 🐶 ❤️
If you are catching baby rats then there is a momma and more babies. We just spent $5600 to rat proof our house. I found newborns in my desk drawer!!! They can get in through a hole the size of a quarter. I'm a very clean person, deep cleaning doesn't help if they are still getting in. I have lived here 7 years, never had a problem. It happened very quickly. The exterminator said it was probably because my neighbors remodeled their house. I recommend Orkin if you have them there.
I would really look into getting an electrician to do the wiring on a different switch for the fan. My bathroom fan stopped working and the visible mold that grew within a couple months was horrendous. It costs so much more to do mold remediation then to get a proper fan in the bathroom
When I visited Oceanside, there was a coffee shop called Communal that was kind of similar to what you’re talking about and it seems like they are doing well!!
Had the same issue with my fan. My husband was able to wire a smart outlet type thing into the fan so we could turn the light on with the switch and then ask our google to turn the fan on and off
You may want to start a following with the sunset market and a venue like the Hive where you could showcase in a small place to get a feel for things. I used to do very intricate free hand dough ornaments. You absolutely need to seal them with a clear gloss or matte one or they swell and turn to mush when the air is humid
What if you created your own wrapping paper prints/ patterns and start there online? You could come up with your branding and your products and then could sell your friend's art and etc too
It hasn't been that long ago that I was looking everywhere for your soup recipe and couldn't find it. So glad you made it and posted it again! Thank you ❤
Hi! Regarding the general store idea, would recommend listening to Ina Garten’s memoir “Be Ready When The Luck Happens”…she wanted to leave her nuclear policy job in the white house & bought a lil shop like you’re describing in the Hamptons on a whim! The book was a great look into what running a store like that entails.
Watch Schitt’s Creek! Your General Store/Mercantile sounds similar to Rose Apothecary. Such a cute idea! I like other’s ideas of starting at a farmers market or a weekend flea market event. Something like that.
About the store. You can do pop-ups first: for example, rent a space on the weekend and offer local brands to display their products there for a certain "rent for space". Your income is the rent that the brands will pay for the opportunity to display their products with you. And they have a place to present themselves, without having to deal with any organizational issues and advertising. So you can see the demand. And also that brings a lot of people together, its fun time to spend and see something new and come to know about artists in your area/comunity. There also can be music band, coffee corners. In my country, this is how a large marketplace began: pop-ups took place twice a month on weekends for about a year. That's how the brand appeared and now it is a large offline store where 150 local brands of clothing, accessories, textiles and decor are collected in one space. Later, a website was opened. The store takes 30% of sales and pays the profit to sellers every day so that they can immediately invest money in production. I have sort of Magnolia vibes (Chip and Joanna Gaines), is it close?
I think the store is a super cute idea. My sisters friends parents own Mucicci’s in Portland Maine and it’s so cute. Maybe you could do a bit online like a curated mix of nonperishable favorites. I’m sure we will all support you that way.
I love your general store idea too! But as others have mentioned think about it from all different angles. To me the idea of having to get staff (people are so unreliable these days), keeping up with inventory, and then tied down to the general store hours and emails (or even having to find countless hours curating items and deciding which products to get)...etc seems like a lot. Don't get me wrong, if it's your dream then go for it!
Your monstera should be fine if you move it upstairs! As long as it’s getting some form of light and isn’t in a drafty area, it’ll be good. Monsteras aren’t as finicky when you temporarily move them, unlike other plants such as fiddle leaf figs.
I agree with Jordy…you should start online. You’ve already got a lot going on and the type of shop you are talking about is a full-time commitment. Why not wait until you’re done school and then you can open a cafe/gift shop combo.
How exciting on your shop idea and always good to dream! ;-) Since you asked for advice: being a business owner myself and much like running a guest house, it is literally 24/7 especially busy around holiday season times. Most stores and restaurants close in their first year, hard truth so if you are willing to be there 9 hours a day as the owner to stay on top of stock, staff etc. it won't work. This is a full time gig and lots of paper work with sourcing best deals on goods, high health risk whenever dealing with food etc. In reality or practise, it is very hard work and not something one can have on the side. On paper it looks all cute and all, with lovely ideas but one spends most of your time marketing, training staff, dealing with suppliers, accounts etc. One is either all in or not at all and it will fold. If it is truly your passion, then go for it with eyes wide open! You would have to give up trips, holiday family visits over seasonal times and all even just to break even. You have mentioned about slowing down due to health and just in general so think long and hard about it. I don't see how YT and this full time business would work unless you got an incredible manager in to do it all but that would cost a lot too. But that would be the only way I can see this working with all your other commitments and wanting that freedom and not being tied to a shop. I am firm believer in passions and if you are dead keen then why not!! :-) Just be grounded and wise here xxx
Ask your parents and sister for advice, bet they would give you solid smart advice. I would take Jordy’s opinion after theirs. I think leasing a store plus having a large mortgage would be too much stress. What if you start off as a wedding planner/event organizer? You are near LA and bet you would do great with that and make a name for yourself.
I bought the vacuum/mop for my husband for Christmas. He asked for a vacuum but I couldn’t pass up this deal! The coupon code doesn’t work on Amazon only at the Robo website.
Hi Michel! Stopping watching on my tv to comment on here for your kitchen corbels. I would highly recommend checking out Makenna XO’s kitchen renovation with her use of corbels! She put them under her range hood and it’s GORGEOUS. She’s a talented DIYer and craftsman here on TH-cam.
There are electronic plug ins at that create a sound we can't hear that will deter mice and rats. We had an invasion earlier this year and out one in each room and now nothing. They say they are safe with animals. We also have a dog.
There are sooo many cute little shops like you are talking about in Maine! The best ones (imo) are a combo of gourmet lunch spot with gifts. Perfect excuse for some market research! I made Christmas decorations out of apple sauce and cinnamon. They smelt wonderful. When the dried I painted them. I don’t have the recipe but I am sure it’s online somewhere.
Just wanted to say I found you through an ad for betterhelp. I was like who is this person? Then your channel was on my feed and I was so excited. Your content is awesome, although I’m at a totally different stage in life, I find your content so relatable and fun to watch. Plus you’re always smiling and I just love that, definitely a mood lifter channel 😊
Have you been to always hungry grocery and goods inside the Marriott hotel next to the seabird? It’s right up your alley and the owner is super sweet and might be helpful.
I would think very carefully about starting a business in regards to any family expansion timeline. Not only is starting a business expensive, but it’s beyond a full time job the first couple years (at least) and it’s really hard to have time for anything else.
I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the show, Schitt’s Creek, (if you haven’t you should watch it, it’s great), but your shop idea reminds me a ton of the shop in that show called Rose Apothecary
The dehumidifier (in the other color options, not the one you linked) says "This product does not meet California air cleaner regulation requirements, and cannot be shipped to California". I'm not sure what that means but just FYI it might not be as great of a dehumidifier as you are hoping for. I know you picked it because it's comparatively cheap but since mold could be especially harmful for you, I figured I'd point that out.
I think brick and mortar is better for this and would be well recieved in san diego! Just think of the input of time it would take you to see it through. I definitely think finding an investor to help offset your own personal costs would be good
Lovely vlog…I miss living near the sea, I used to walk our dog and run every evening…any weekend I have free I go to the sea..❤ enjoy the rest of your week…xxx
I'm so sorry you got sick, Michel, and I hope you are feeling 100% by now. So glad to have my tri-weekly Max fix😍. CRAAAZY fire story...thanks for the warning! I think I have commented before that opening up a gift shop would TOTALLY be a Michel thing. You would be a wonderful general store manager. Surely you can network with someone in your culinary school class to find a person who would be willing to go into business with you. I'm sorry I can't offer in any expert advice, but I say GO FOR IT!
Girl my husband is an electrician so I’m kind of biased, but it would be worth it to hire someone to add a switch so you could turn on the real exhaust fan on it’s own. I don’t think it would be terribly expensive.
Wow I love your general store idea! I’m a soap maker and was wondering what if your vendors paid you a commission for each sale! Would help cover costs when they make a sale! Love your videos Michel! 👋 Hi from Maine!
Here are links / stamps / opa's recipe for my mobile viewer friends!

Disgusting 🤮

It might be worth looking into having an electrician rewire the fan to a separate switch in your bathroom.
Especially since it sounded like the dehumidifier made sound too, so it kind of defeats the purpose
@@tulipsinjulyI think the point was to *not* run it when she’s filming ads but have it on the rest of the time especially when it’s humid from showering.

I agree with you, Michel. It sounds like your goal is community and that would be easier to achieve with a physical space vs an online store.
Hi Michel. Yes! Have to take care of where they come in or it will continue.
Yes you should have the home rodent proofed. It’s costly but so worth it. One rat died in the walls of my house once and the smell was unbearable.
Okay I will look into it! 🐀

Junk journals are the books you were describing. I bet you would love adding in things from traveling and journaling about them.
You should try to make those cutie cards with art you find into like recipe cards. That would be a fun way to see the art as you make the recipe!
Hello Michel, so glad your feeling better. Love the tree garland idea. thanks for soup recipe, I need to try it. Sounds wonderful!

This is the most perfect time to get a cat 😻
I'd rather figure out where their getting in from. Another pet costs food, time. vets and adjusting to Max. Plus cats can be a$$holes.
@lamar9331 what a terrible and unnecessary thing to say.
One idea for the lobster 🦞 card is making it bigger with a mat behind it and making it more bougie 😊. If you have mice, try the tomcat glow green 💚 glue traps they caught every mouse i had!

We are all sick here in NY and NJ. Reality of Northeast winter unfortunately, especially for us autoimmune girls. Get better quick ❤
Less light will definitely affect the plant especially during the shorter days.

That’s a great idea!! Love it! I love places like that where it’s unique and community!! 🙂❤️❤️
Great job programming it! 😊
Helpful when you get it for free!!!!!!
All I can think about with those white things you shipped home is all the lead that’s probably in the paint 🫣
That pink sweater top is to die for! 😍

Watching your garland making makes me want to do the same thing with apple cinnamon dough
Feel better I’m actually watching Jordy’s live right now lol ❤
Aw love that!
Make that dough again and do Max’s paw print. My daughter and I did that before with her dog and it turned out so cute.
I bought the vacuum/mop for my husband for Christmas. He asked for a vacuum but I couldn’t pass up this deal! The coupon code doesn’t work on Amazon only at the Robo website.
I wonder why you din't just open your window to let moisture out of the bathroom? That's how many countries do it! And no added clutter to the room :)
Selling little things like homemade hot sauce, worcestershire sauce and pizza dough would be so fun too!

Your general store idea reminds me of a “world market”, but local.
Also, my family (I for my family) make your grandpa’s soup all the time
There are sooo many cute little shops like you are talking about in Maine! The best ones (imo) are a combo of gourmet lunch spot with gifts. Perfect excuse for some market research! Could you start at a farmers market type setting or pop up shop in an already established coffee shop? Where is that lavender crewneck from?!😍
i think in the description it’s listed under ‘pink sweatshirt’ when i clicked on the link, it sent me to a bone/white coloured one. so im not sure.
oh Michel you are hilarious lol. You are so much like me when I was your age. You talking about not seeing any cooking cutter but you're getting that big pasta but you're not seeing cause there's something in your eye. You crack me up. I love your authenticity can't wait for more giggles you young lass~! cheers to you~!
The general store idea is amazing 🎉 hope it can come to fruition
Aspen and Arlo has super cute gift wrap!
For the card, you could copy it at High resolution in a larger size for a bigger print?
Love the store idea!
Wish you could find an inside booth/mall situation where you could start out small.
I always think to pray about it and maybe there will be an open door.
Fun vlog… and please have an exterminator check out the rats… likely a nest nearby!
where is your purple shirt from?! whrn u made your dough?! thatvis so cute!
I made Christmas decorations out of apple sauce and cinnamon. They smelt wonderful. When the dried I painted them. I don’t have the recipe but I am sure it’s online somewhere.
Love your idea on little shop and support local artists‼️‼️‼️. Just please don’t stop your vlog s. 🙏

Hi Michel how are you happy Wednesday afternoon and happy fall day and I enjoy your channel and you are amazing supporter
Thank you! You too!🥰
I would think very carefully about starting a business in regards to any family expansion timeline. Not only is starting a business expensive, but it’s beyond a full time job the first couple years (at least) and it’s really hard to have time for anything else.
My husband started a business (with a partner) the same month our first baby was born. It was a little bit stressful!
You NEVER say you’ve all these wasteful things for free! We know you don’t mop, I’m sure you have a cleaning lady! Let’s be real here, please!
I definitely think finding an investor to help offset your own personal costs would be good
Hope you're feeling better
Thank you 🥰
Lovely vlog…I miss living near the sea, I used to walk our dog and run every evening…any weekend I have free I go to the sea..❤ enjoy the rest of your week…xxx
Thank you so much, it means a lot! 🥰
Michel is that tree by your desk real? (What is it?)
Also, have you tried the gluten free English muffins from Trader Joe’s? They’re weird 🥲🫠
Junk Journals...LOL 🤙💙 Would love to see the support of local artist. That is a great idea!
Michel, have you not been to paper source in La Jolla. You will love the gift wrap there!
How about Cape Cod or Fort Collins lease split?
BRB I would literally travel to Oceanside to go to your general store🤭
Girl my husband is an electrician so I’m kind of biased, but it would be worth it to hire someone to add a switch so you could turn on the real exhaust fan on it’s own. I don’t think it would be terribly expensive.
Why don’t you look to sublet a spot from a coffee shop and get a shelf of your specialties going? Then follow the demand
Wow I love your general store idea! I’m a soap maker and was wondering what if your vendors paid you a commission for each sale! Would help cover costs when they make a sale! Love your videos Michel! 👋 Hi from Maine!
Junk journals! Start one especially for your travel you’ll love it!
your videos are pure cozy comfort for me!!
loove your mix couloured jumber 🎉. So nice in you!
Could you move the monsterra to the guest house? That seemed to have a lot of windows.
Love the small grocer idea!!! We have a cute curated store in Milford, DE called the Farmacy Market with similar ideas!!! Go for it
This reminds me a bit of Ina Garten’s story she had a store in the Hamptons! This is so fun Michel 🤍 Love the idea
Junk Journal. Love you wearing color. So flattering.
lol our robot vacuums name is Robbie too!
For the roborock, in my house, to get the living room we have a step down, how does that work?
Look at opening a booth in Liberty Market in Point Loma!
