There are technically 8 games (not including KH3). Kingdom Hearts X has been a game not apart of the core story until recently. Though KH:X is now closed down, it was moved to a mobile port in Kingdom Hearts: Unchained X (Chi) which later became Kingdom Hearts: Union X (Cross). In order, I'd place their gameplay from: 8) KH 7) 358/2 Days 6) Chain of Memories 5) Coded 4) Union X (Cross) 3) KH II 2) Birth by Sleep 1) Dream Drop Distance No matter what, I can't see how (other than nostalgia) that KH gameplay was good. If we were going by story, then this list would be completely different (I'd probably put this one in first or at least third). The gameplay is beyond its time but KH has perfected its own gameplay over the years and has made vast improvements with each installment. Again, I'm not hating on 358/2 Days but they are pushing the DS's boundaries a bit too far with this installment. If remastered correctly like Coded and Chain of Memories were, it would be much higher. But it feels more like a quick missions to complete game rather than one that takes you on an adventure. The story is just very nicely done though (touching end always makes me choke up). Chain of Memories (for better or worse) actually was made for the GameBoy in mind and plays very nicely on the handheld. No one can argue that they actually thought this was a technical marvel Square Enix had pulled. Instead of using lots of code to make complicated maneuvers and not wanting the gameplay to feel stale (like a regular port of any other game to GameBoy would feel) they changed it up a little. The remaster (which is what you get in the complete KH edition has the Re:Chain of Memories that has enhanced visuals, actual cut scenes, and the such to give a better experience. But it isn't for everyone and only down on the list because the others handle gameplay better. Now, for a game that was meant for early phones, Coded deserves actual praise. Pushing what a phone could do to its limits, you played a simple game that told a simple epilogue to KH II. Since we didn't get it (internationally) they remade the game after it was finished into a DS title. Now, there was MUCH less story and cutscenes to full with. And the areas were much smaller and the gameplay was already there. They decided that they would just enhance the gameplay more than it already was giving a more KH experience on the DS. Lots of gameplay options that were taken into account when making future installments and was able to take some of the fun from KH II since it had so much free space. This vastly unknown title irks me because I have spent a whole year on this game. A free title, you play with a completely weird way of fighting (that is fair in Japan but harder anywhere else). Using medals to power your abilities you fight heartless in turn based gameplay using these medals special abilities to help you progress further. Other than gameplay, this game is pretty much harsh. If remastered, into something like Coded, this game would gain lots of praise, but for now it is just a harsh game. The reason Kingdom Hearts II is not in number one or two is because the other two expanded on KH II's gameplay by making it better. Not much to say here other than this is where the gameplay was probably its best until the next two installments. Nothing feels better than feeling like you can take on anything, and that's what Birth by Sleep does its best, even until the end. Using three different styles of fighting, you progress nicely through the game using a vast assortment of abilities. Some abilities work best on Terra, while others work best on Aqua. And then there might be some that just don't work too well with Ventas but there is still enough to allow for a lot diversity. You can mix and mismatch abilities and nothing about it feels completely stale. Playing through each role doesn't feel terrible nor cruel (or boring). This game, Dream Drop Distance, is at the top as it is able to bring not only good gameplay from you protagonists (Sora or Riku) but it also allows you to gain lots of benefits from gaining more friends. Like gaining helpful passives or beneficial spells, each gives you something rewarding and don't feel as helpless and Donald and Goofy from the previous games. This is probably the first game to give good allies (and I believe the revamped version fixed a lot of the issues from OP's explanation).
Jio T Agreed. I think Re:Coded was trying to be like Inception but failed miserably. I spoke to a guy in the comments section of a Re:Coded video recently and the poor guy is living in denial. He WANTS to believe that the story is good, even going as far as ignoring the fact that it is RIPE with plot holes, inconsistencies, and bad dialog.

My Top 3 KH games are actually: KH2, BbS and CoM! Chain of Memories for the GBA was my very first KH game ever and, if I never had played it, I would probably never had played any other game of the series. Just imagine, KH wouldn't be my favorite videogames series if I hadn't played that specific game. I understand that a lot of people don't like CoM due to the gameplay mechanics, but for me it was all so well done for a portable game (and even the Re: CoM still feels great to me). The story was so strong, mysterious and always kept you wanting to know more about what was going on. It was the very first game where the Organization was actually presented. The fact that it also had entire 3D cutscenes on a GBA cartridge was so impressive, not to mention it's the very first game of the series to include two playable characters and two different stories. CoM was just so much innovative for its time! Just let that sink for a second... A GBA cartridge with so much content inside. I mean, that alone, is almost as impressive as my "Keyblade"... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) P.S.: Dream Drop Distance could also be on my personal Top 3 if wasn't for the fact that it didn't had that much story evolution, until you reach the Final World. If it wasn't for that simple "detail" it would definitely be up there next to KH2 and BbS.
I haven't played Chain of Memories or Re: Coded, so here's my top five Kingdom Hearts games! This comment is going to be lengthy... 5: Kingdom Hearts 1 (the story was very enjoyable and the gameplay had a few moments of absolute brilliance, however I think most of the worlds in KH1 are poorly designed and tedious to play through. The controls are also clunky. Please don't kill me) 4: 358/2 Days (I adore the plot and character development in this game. I didn't care for the reckon missions and I would have also liked to explore some new worlds) 3: Dream Drop Distance (the drop system and flomation are awesome. I would like this game more if Sora was less derpy, but as it stands, DDD is a great game) 2: Birth By Sleep (I haven't completed this game yet, but I love the combat, story, characters and worlds) 1: Kingdom Hearts 2 (the most masterfully crafted game I have ever played)
My top 5 is 5. DDD 4. 358/2 3. KH 2. KH2 1. BBS DDD made the story too complex and the flo-motion made Kingdom Hearts feel more un-magical and more sci-fi (Idk) but it was fun 358/2 was brilliant but the controls were annoying KH was nostalgic and the plot was simple and compelling but the gameplay was tedious KH2 is amazing but BBS was more interesting and important and Ventus is my favorite character

+YinYanReshiram I love the story of KH1 of course, because it set so many events into motion....the whole story in other words lol. KH1& KH2 are the best games of the series in my opinion, since they are the core storyline content to an extent. I found that playing KH1& KH2 allowed the player to experience the emerging story in the best way without having to try something new in terms of gameplay mechanics. However, in terms of story overall, the other entries in the series pose a great amount of importance and insight into the universe of the games as a whole. Story is important in RPGs, and in video games in general. Sitting in front of a TV for hours to have no substance or some sort of emotional connection to said media is kind of empty and is devoid of purpose. Kingdom Hearts as a whole incorporates a huge cast of characters, who all play such a vital role throughout the franchise. The connections between all characters are deep, and each character's backstory or physical role in the overall conflict fills that idea of sitting in front of the TV to play the games plausible. I'm glad that Kingdom Hearts was created, and its birth into reality will always have a positive impact towards me spending time to play video games.
I agree with the top 3, but...if this was split up into two videos i think you could get your message across more clearly. What i mean is, perhaps make one video where you list the quality of the gameplay in order and another the quality of the story. Days and BBS would win in terms of story and 2 and DDD in terms of Gameplay.
Roxas I dunno man, the ending cutscene of KH2 with Passion / Sanctuary playing is one of the best and most satisfying game endings ever. I cry everytime ;____; Days and BBS contribute the most to worldbuilding, I think. It's close but I would slot KH2 in with BBS as having the best story.

I understand his opinion as for me it took two attempts to really play it...the first time I played until the bossfight in the pinnoccio world and was frustrated all the time. But then a year or so later I just started over again, really got to understand the combat mechanics and pretty much stomped through Sora's story in a few days. But still it didn't have the "I could go on with this forever"-feeling that KH2 and BBS gave me, it was a simple action card game after all and became a drag after a few hours. I had the ps2 version, just to mention it...maybe that aspect was a little more forgiveable for a gba game
Serrydartman I tried to make my list somewhat objective opposed to subjective. The gameplay in the first game felt weaker than the others because it lacked commands, had awful camera, awkward platforming etc. It was the first game in the series, so can't blame them though.

i really enjoyed 358/2 days and prefer it over ddd. I'm currently playing ddd and i dislike having to get commands from the dream eaters. Personally my top 3 would be, 1st KH2 2nd BBS 3rd 358/2 days. I loved playing 358/2 days a lot as a kid because Roxas is arguably my fav character of the series.

BBS comes out on top for me simply because I never expected such a moving story in these, otherwise, fairly lighthearted games. In this one you followed the main characters from bliss until their respective dark endings. It turned the tables upside down and ultimately made SE gain a ton of respect from my side. I really like KH2 as well, but seeing BBS unfold was so well done that it was almost unbearable.

I didn't know much about KH, I didn't play it till KH2 came out and that was the first one I played. I didn't pay attention to the story and just thought it was cool. "Disney~" But after I bought the First one, along with CoM on my PS2 I started paying attention to the story and redid it all again. I can proudly say I cried a lot when I replayed all of them..... KH2 and BBS made me cry the most and are my favorites, along with 358/2 Days because I love the story and Xion, as my pic and name suggest.... Anyway, I can't decide if KH2 or BBS is my favorite..

I don't have much of an opinion on 358/2, Re: Coded, or Re: CoM because I chose to just watch a story summary for those 3 but I agree with the rest of your list. BBS is definitely better than KH1, but KH2 is by far the best in the series. Such an incredible game.

My two favorite KH games are KH2 and BBS. The main reason why I like this game is because it explains how certain things came to be in the future games KH2 flat out improved the gameplay from the first installment. I also like how your magic recharges after using all of your MP

I think Chain of Memories was good, back then on GBA i didnt think its bad just complicated some times but its fun both GBA ver and Re:Chain. I feel like fans probably dislike the handheld KH games cuz its strange to them and gameplay feels different from KH2

I absolutely loved Re:Coded, it pains me to see that almost everyone dislikes it...
Angrychelseafan07 true. It did bring in some feels with Data Riku and a ton of feels with Data Roxas. D.Roxas' The Other Promise in Re:Coded is the best variant of The Other Promise imo. And my heart drops when it starts to play right before D.Roxas gets fed up with D.Sora's Gary Sue aditude. (That's another problem with this game, D.Sora is just a blind fool who does whatever he's told + he's TOO good.) It's combat/settings are the most unique out of all of the series (not counting Re:CoM). You could level up and customize your keyblade. Different keyblades had different abilities, buffs, and debuffs, they also attacked differently. You had a slew of finishing moves. Like in BBS, you had a command deck with a ton of magic/attack commands. The commands could level up, get stronger, and side abilities. A level 100 thundara with power up ability or c/d minus ability would be way better than a level 1 thundaga. You could make your style however you wanted. Then you have the thing where you can change your stats. You can give yourself resistances, change your levels, and stats. Then you can change your damage output/max hp to gain experience, cp, and/or focus faster. If you could change how Sora looked, the game would have really felt like it was you who was the main character. The game was vurtually fully customizable. Then they had dungeons that were fun as hell to play. It has the hardest after game out of all of the Kingdom Hearts series. Oh my. It took me months to be able to clear the 100 floor dungeon to get the Ultima Weapon. I stuck with this game longer than any other KH games. It also gave me the biggest sense of accomplishment. God damn, that dungeon was hard af.

Justin Hochman Kingdom Hearts 2 is actually number 5 on this list. I'm a magic lover, and magic felt VERY UNDERWHELMING in kh 2. The only time it was good was when you were in final form, and that came, randomly, after you beat Roxas. They also have that dumb ass mp bar, I'm not a fan of it at all... They got rid of goofy's MP gift that he had in kh 1, my favourite ability that goofy had. Drive forms were cool, but I found myself turning into anti-form too much, it was really annoying not being able to use magic/items. It also gets some negative points from me for being on console, I'm out of my house and on the go a lot, so hand helds are where it's at for me. Replayablitiy is a thing too. I only wanted to replay kh 2 to play as Roxas again, critical mode, and for the HD remix. But for Re:Coded, they have replayablitiy built into the game, you can redo entire world's without having to restart the game, or just refight the boss. You'd be scored based off of how well you did, and it pushed me to redo it and make myself get a better score. This list is also based off of my enjoyment of the game, not purely story, graphics, or anything else. Sure, those enhance my enjoyment, but it's all about game play/interactions for me. It's what makes a game a game. The challenge and manipulation of a character. I feel like Re:Coded did these way better than KH 2.
Twinflame Byond Kingdom Hearts 2 is considered the best game in the series by the majority of fans for a reason-- there's no debating that it is the best game. Re:Coded was basicslly a filler game man... don't compare it with Kingdom Hearts 2. (I'm not trying to be rude btw, just amazed how someone can like Re:Coded more than KH2. Even liking the original Kingdom Hearts more that KH2 is crazy to me haha)

I agree that 358/2 Days was a very boring game to play because of the fact that the missions felt like chores. But now I realize that Square probably did that on purpose so that we could feel Roxas' disdain for the Organization

With your argument about roxas having yellow eyes in the CG cutscene, you put bbs as number 1 for story, when for another CG cutscene (kh2fm secret ending) for bbs terra doesnt have blue/teal eyes like he normally does, which makes your example for kh1 invalid
Birth by sleep will always be number 1 for me IDC how good kh3 is birth by sleep was my first kingdom hearts game and maybe that's one of the reasons why its my favorite but the story is so good it really makes you grow attached to the characters especially how they were three best friends happy and one of them kills their own master and how all three of them had sad endings now all I ask of you square enix PLEASE DONT KILL ONE OF THE THREE FRIENDS IN KINGDOM HEARTS 3!!!! That would really get me in my feels they need a happy story I want to be able to play as them in the future again all three of them happy and how they used to be 😭❤💔
358/2 days was absolutely amazing. Roxas’s story is amazing and although some bosses were annoying (hated the boss in Halloween Town) I think everything was made up for.
My list (from worst to best): 1. Re:Coded Unlike many gamers I play games chiefly for story reasons, which is partly why Re:Coded is so far down the list. It's story was an interesting concept but in the end it felt irrelevant and convoluted and not particularly interesting. The gameplay was alright but not great (I hated babysitting the CPU usage of the command deck and having to install level ups rubbed me wrong). Its main upside was the "backdoor" areas (AKA the glitched regions that you had to clear out to get rid of the bugs), I thought those were cool and had a blast battling the glitching heartless. Overall Re:Coded was fun but I could've lived without it. 2. Re:Chain of Memories The story was amazing, the characters were outstanding, and the graphics were great for its time. But the gameplay was painful, I hated having to sort and re-sort my decks, the sleight system felt like a waste of attacks, and it made grinding even more painfully dull than usual. Plus the main story felt separated and cut up due to the game's different "world" system. I did like it but I hated that gameplay. 3. Kingdom Hearts 1 Amazing for the first game in the series, it had a strong cohesive story, lovable characters, and some truly amazing villains. Again, however, its gameplay was a little hard at times. The camera was clunky and hard to control, Sora's movements were clumsy and missed easily, and having to constantly flip through the command list to do what should have been reaction commands was tiresome. The gummi ship levels were tedious and the gummi garage was difficult to use. However, it set the stage for the other games and led to the fun and fast-paced gameplay of KH2. Overall it was a good game. 4. Birth By Sleep Loved the story, loved the characters, loved the gameplay, hated how separated and incomplete the story felt when cut between Terra, Aqua and Ventus. It felt like I was playing three games instead of just one, which was irritating. And the distinct lack of companions was not something I'd like to see again. However, I still loved it a lot and I can't help but keep replaying it over and over again. 5. 358/2 Days This one should probably have a lower place on the list. The mission system was tedious and difficult, the way that you had to pack magic casts with you and were forced to carry level ups in your backpack frustrated me, and THOSE STUPID EMERALD SERENADES AND CYMBAL MONKEYS!!! So why is it so high on the list, you ask? Several reasons. For one, as annoying as the combat system could be it had one of the best stories in the whole game and it had (in my opinion) the best main characters out of the bunch (Sea Salt trio forever!!!). Days was also the first KH game I ever played. It is what got me into the series and so it has a high nostalgia value that makes me enjoy it far more than I would have if I had played the games in order. 6. Dream Drop Distance Love the story, love the combat system, love the characters, love the plot twists, love the villains, love the setting, love so much about this game!!! I love command decks, and this game made perfect use of them. Link attacks were fun and don't even get me started on the amazing-ness of the Flowmotion, it's easily one of my favorite aspects of the game. I even enjoyed the Dive levels, which is unusual for me. It wasn't completely without faults, however; having to constantly play with and babysit your Spirits could get on my nerves, the Drop system was obnoxious, especially during Boss battles, and Sora was far stupider than he should have been. However, I really enjoyed playing as Riku (without the card system or Sora getting caught in a tractor beam) and I would like to be able to do it again. 7. Kingdom Hearts 2 Admit it guys, you all saw it coming. Kingdom Hearts 2. The definition of what a Kingdom Hearts game should be. It had an amazing story, complex and deep and full of twists and turns that left me constantly on the edge of my seat. Its combat system was brilliant, fast-paced and easy to use, heightened by Drive Forms and the best Summon and Limit attacks that you'll ever find. The sheer number of powerful Keyblades in the game was enough to make your mind explode, and the reflect spell was an excellent addition. Even the gummi levels were fun, fast-paced and exciting, sharply contrasting to the dullness of KH1's gummi segments. The only complaint I have is Anti-form. I hate Anti-form, it's an easy way to get yourself killed and as you have very little control over when you go into it it can trigger at the worst possible times (like in the middle of the Cavern of Remembrance while you're trying to kill four Hot Rods at once and you try to go into Master form but PSYCHE! YOU'RE A HEARTLESS NOW BUDDY MWAHAHAHA!!! And then you die because you can't heal yourself and you're not good at dodging and those things are fast and they pack a punch and can kill you in four hits)

D MAS The way you phrased it made it sound like you were saying it was bad. I agree that the gameplay is amazing (in most of the games, anyway), but it's the story that really hooked me into it. I mean, I did start with 358/2 Days. The gameplay in that one is… lacking.
Lt. Basil I said "not to shit on them" though. I'd also recommend playing 358/2 Days again. While lacking it does have a fair layer of strategy with the panel customization (even if you'll spend 3 hours getting an optimal setup as well as a headache) and options like Guard being rather useful in combat. Elemental weaknesses are a thing too, and you can finish most fights quicker if you know what to use.
2, i think, made the combat a bit more messy along with its imporvements. But as for plots, 2 is a clusterfuck. no contest between 1 and 2 in the plot department.

Kingdom Hearts 2 is my absolute favorite game of ALL TIME! KH2 was my first exposure to the world of Kingdom Hearts and although I love the first game as well, KH2 will always hold a special place in my heart!

I think an easy way to cap Attraction Flow would to make a small meter that drains with the use of it, while only taking a second or two to refill while idle... With the right balance between drain and refill speed, i think that could fix the problems that Flow Motion had. :)
My favorite KH game would be KH2 and BBS. I loved them both because of their amazing story and gamepaly! My top three would be 1.DDD 2.BBS 3.KH2(is #1 btw) I love all the KH games EXEPT COM and Re:COM!! Augh!! I hated the card system so much!!!! I died so many times because of those cards u have no IDEA!!!! The reason I loved BBS is the story and the characters I like how they let u choose 3 people to complete a story. Aqua is my favorite story. Why I love KH2 so much is the gameplay AND story because the gameplay was so fun and the transformations were awesome to! I just LOVE the story it's like THE BEST!!!!!!! XD

The game doesn't force you to do so ! Just pray for luck to get good cards and git gud without sleights if you wanna be strategic !

The original is still my favorite.. Mainly because of it being fresh and new, timing in life, and I connected well with the worlds.. When hearing about Pirates of the Caribbean being in KH2, I was like wtf? That's a movie, not a cartoon! I am all about the Disney classics.

Are you aware of how many things go in favor of Disney when it comes to Kingdom Hearts? They are the bigger company you know. I've no bias towards Pirates of the Caribbean either, as I've never seen any of the movies.
I agree, BBB was my favorite KH game in story and combat. Loved having 3 characters. My only complaint is the ending, and perhaps terra vs the master or how it was handled

+Kevin Tyson bbs gameplay isn't really balanced. aqua and ven's dodge commands were too broken, healing while guarding OP. seeker mines and mine square/shield OP, Shotlock invincibility OP, D-links OP and when you have cap damage, you just use the command style finisher that has the most hits and you rarely use normal hits it's really press triangle to win bbs. kh 2 wasn't always mashing the attack button (praise lvl 1 or low level runs for that same count for bbs) kh 2 sure has reflect, firaga spam with final form and magneta thundaga combo and limit form and thats somewhat it. KH 1 in my opinion is alittle more balanced then kh 2 and bbs though you mostly use aeroga and curaga

The mechanics in Dream Drop Distance are really interesting. The Drop feature means that up to the final boss battles you can play as either Riku or Sora at any point in the game. You also get to play though each world twice, in some worlds exploring different areas and different storylines (Prankster’s Paradise limits Riku to Monstro’s interior wile Sora gets the fun Park and the sea bed for example). It also sets up a reveal for late in the game. The reality warps are fun little mini games that aren’t difficult and only necessary to reach the next area or finish off the enemy very rarely. The one for the Grid is cool, and are actual lines of code that make sense for the function you set. The Dream Eaters are an interesting addition, and add more variety to the gameplay. Very Pokemon, you can create and put different specimens to get different effects and techniques. The mini games to train them also work well if you’ve got five minutes, and the skill grid adds a level of strategy that aids you in populating your command deck, encouraging you to collect and train as many of the Dream Eaters as you can.

Chain of Memories 358/2 was my entry into the series and it's definitely my favorite of the bunch, I went in starting the game just as confused as Roxas which really set the tone for me. Also the story in my opinion is simply the best I've played in any video game as well as some of the best character development. The missions were also done well in my opinion, they really set the "work before play" mood really well which kept me addicted and really eager to see how the story unfolds. I've yet to beat BBS since my ps3 controller broke down but I've heard great things.

If you haven't beat it yet, there is a way to cheese through the boss. Fenrir keyblade + Negative Combo. No combo pluses at all, no aerial finishers at all. Just jump and attack, if you do it right you can stunlock him so he never can attack you.

Kingdom Hearts 1 is my favorite game of all time. I was just a kid and it was the first time my emotions were truly moved by a video game. When Sora and Kairi's hands separated in that last scene, and the music played, I bawled my eyes out KH2's ending was good too but nothing has ever moved me the way KH1 did

Top 3: 1: Original KH Primarily for being my first game in the series. This game had a magic to it, as I felt more epic battling the darkness in this game than in any of the other games, mainly due to the music in the original being some of the best in the series. 2. BBS Makes sense of much of the series' plot and ties it together. I am also a big fan of the KH series for the brutal secret bosses, and man are the ones in this game BRUTAL. Some of the most difficult fights in the series. 3. KH2 With the best music in the series and some of the most epic (and having easily the most brutally difficult fight in the entire series (lingering will)) fights in the series as well. The story is also a solid in this one.

Kingdom Hearts X has been a game not apart of the core story until recently. Though KH:X is now closed down, it was moved to a mobile port in Kingdom Hearts: Unchained X (Chi) which later became Kingdom Hearts: Union X (Cross).

No matter what, I can't see how (other than nostalgia) that KH gameplay was good. If we were going by story, then this list would be completely different (I'd probably put this one in first or at least third). The gameplay is beyond its time but KH has perfected its own gameplay over the years and has made vast improvements with each installment.
Again, I'm not hating on 358/2 Days but they are pushing the DS's boundaries a bit too far with this installment. If remastered correctly like Coded and Chain of Memories were, it would be much higher. But it feels more like a quick missions to complete game rather than one that takes you on an adventure. The story is just very nicely done though (touching end always makes me choke up).
Chain of Memories (for better or worse) actually was made for the GameBoy in mind and plays very nicely on the handheld. No one can argue that they actually thought this was a technical marvel Square Enix had pulled. Instead of using lots of code to make complicated maneuvers and not wanting the gameplay to feel stale (like a regular port of any other game to GameBoy would feel) they changed it up a little. The remaster (which is what you get in the complete KH edition has the Re:Chain of Memories that has enhanced visuals, actual cut scenes, and the such to give a better experience. But it isn't for everyone and only down on the list because the others handle gameplay better.
Now, for a game that was meant for early phones, Coded deserves actual praise. Pushing what a phone could do to its limits, you played a simple game that told a simple epilogue to KH II. Since we didn't get it (internationally) they remade the game after it was finished into a DS title. Now, there was MUCH less story and cutscenes to full with. And the areas were much smaller and the gameplay was already there. They decided that they would just enhance the gameplay more than it already was giving a more KH experience on the DS. Lots of gameplay options that were taken into account when making future installments and was able to take some of the fun from KH II since it had so much free space.
This vastly unknown title irks me because I have spent a whole year on this game. A free title, you play with a completely weird way of fighting (that is fair in Japan but harder anywhere else). Using medals to power your abilities you fight heartless in turn based gameplay using these medals special abilities to help you progress further. Other than gameplay, this game is pretty much harsh. If remastered, into something like Coded, this game would gain lots of praise, but for now it is just a harsh game.
The reason Kingdom Hearts II is not in number one or two is because the other two expanded on KH II's gameplay by making it better. Not much to say here other than this is where the gameplay was probably its best until the next two installments.
Nothing feels better than feeling like you can take on anything, and that's what Birth by Sleep does its best, even until the end. Using three different styles of fighting, you progress nicely through the game using a vast assortment of abilities. Some abilities work best on Terra, while others work best on Aqua. And then there might be some that just don't work too well with Ventas but there is still enough to allow for a lot diversity. You can mix and mismatch abilities and nothing about it feels completely stale. Playing through each role doesn't feel terrible nor cruel (or boring).
This game, Dream Drop Distance, is at the top as it is able to bring not only good gameplay from you protagonists (Sora or Riku) but it also allows you to gain lots of benefits from gaining more friends. Like gaining helpful passives or beneficial spells, each gives you something rewarding and don't feel as helpless and Donald and Goofy from the previous games. This is probably the first game to give good allies (and I believe the revamped version fixed a lot of the issues from OP's explanation).

Jio T Agreed. I think Re:Coded was trying to be like Inception but failed miserably. I spoke to a guy in the comments section of a Re:Coded video recently and the poor guy is living in denial. He WANTS to believe that the story is good, even going as far as ignoring the fact that it is RIPE with plot holes, inconsistencies, and bad dialog.

Chain of Memories for the GBA was my very first KH game ever and, if I never had played it, I would probably never had played any other game of the series.
Just imagine, KH wouldn't be my favorite videogames series if I hadn't played that specific game.
I understand that a lot of people don't like CoM due to the gameplay mechanics, but for me it was all so well done for a portable game (and even the Re: CoM still feels great to me).
The story was so strong, mysterious and always kept you wanting to know more about what was going on. It was the very first game where the Organization was actually presented.
The fact that it also had entire 3D cutscenes on a GBA cartridge was so impressive, not to mention it's the very first game of the series to include two playable characters and two different stories. CoM was just so much innovative for its time!
Just let that sink for a second... A GBA cartridge with so much content inside.

P.S.: Dream Drop Distance could also be on my personal Top 3 if wasn't for the fact that it didn't had that much story evolution, until you reach the Final World.

I haven't played Chain of Memories or Re: Coded, so here's my top five Kingdom Hearts games! This comment is going to be lengthy...
5: Kingdom Hearts 1 (the story was very enjoyable and the gameplay had a few moments of absolute brilliance, however I think most of the worlds in KH1 are poorly designed and tedious to play through. The controls are also clunky. Please don't kill me)
4: 358/2 Days (I adore the plot and character development in this game. I didn't care for the reckon missions and I would have also liked to explore some new worlds)
3: Dream Drop Distance (the drop system and flomation are awesome. I would like this game more if Sora was less derpy, but as it stands, DDD is a great game)

KH1& KH2 are the best games of the series in my opinion, since they are the core storyline content to an extent. I found that playing KH1& KH2 allowed the player to experience the emerging story in the best way without having to try something new in terms of gameplay mechanics. However, in terms of story overall, the other entries in the series pose a great amount of importance and insight into the universe of the games as a whole. Story is important in RPGs, and in video games in general. Sitting in front of a TV for hours to have no substance or some sort of emotional connection to said media is kind of empty and is devoid of purpose. Kingdom Hearts as a whole incorporates a huge cast of characters, who all play such a vital role throughout the franchise. The connections between all characters are deep, and each character's backstory or physical role in the overall conflict fills that idea of sitting in front of the TV to play the games plausible. I'm glad that Kingdom Hearts was created, and its birth into reality will always have a positive impact towards me spending time to play video games.
I agree with the top 3, but...if this was split up into two videos i think you could get your message across more clearly. What i mean is, perhaps make one video where you list the quality of the gameplay in order and another the quality of the story. Days and BBS would win in terms of story and 2 and DDD in terms of Gameplay.

I understand his opinion as for me it took two attempts to really play it...the first time I played until the bossfight in the pinnoccio world and was frustrated all the time. But then a year or so later I just started over again, really got to understand the combat mechanics and pretty much stomped through Sora's story in a few days. But still it didn't have the "I could go on with this forever"-feeling that KH2 and BBS gave me, it was a simple action card game after all and became a drag after a few hours. I had the ps2 version, just to mention it...maybe that aspect was a little more forgiveable for a gba game
AgeofJP CoM on the GBA was garbage, it was boring as hell. The PS2 remake was much MUCH better than the original.
BBS was my favorite too until I actually beat KH2.

Serrydartman I tried to make my list somewhat objective opposed to subjective. The gameplay in the first game felt weaker than the others because it lacked commands, had awful camera, awkward platforming etc.
It was the first game in the series, so can't blame them though.

i really enjoyed 358/2 days and prefer it over ddd. I'm currently playing ddd and i dislike having to get commands from the dream eaters. Personally my top 3 would be, 1st KH2 2nd BBS 3rd 358/2 days. I loved playing 358/2 days a lot as a kid because Roxas is arguably my fav character of the series.

BBS comes out on top for me simply because I never expected such a moving story in these, otherwise, fairly lighthearted games. In this one you followed the main characters from bliss until their respective dark endings. It turned the tables upside down and ultimately made SE gain a ton of respect from my side. I really like KH2 as well, but seeing BBS unfold was so well done that it was almost unbearable.

I didn't know much about KH, I didn't play it till KH2 came out and that was the first one I played. I didn't pay attention to the story and just thought it was cool. "Disney~" But after I bought the First one, along with CoM on my PS2 I started paying attention to the story and redid it all again. I can proudly say I cried a lot when I replayed all of them..... KH2 and BBS made me cry the most and are my favorites, along with 358/2 Days because I love the story and Xion, as my pic and name suggest.... Anyway, I can't decide if KH2 or BBS is my favorite..

I don't have much of an opinion on 358/2, Re: Coded, or Re: CoM because I chose to just watch a story summary for those 3 but I agree with the rest of your list. BBS is definitely better than KH1, but KH2 is by far the best in the series. Such an incredible game.

My two favorite KH games are KH2 and BBS. The main reason why I like this game is because it explains how certain things came to be in the future games
KH2 flat out improved the gameplay from the first installment. I also like how your magic recharges after using all of your MP

I think Chain of Memories was good, back then on GBA i didnt think its bad just complicated some times but its fun both GBA ver and Re:Chain. I feel like fans probably dislike the handheld KH games cuz its strange to them and gameplay feels different from KH2

Notice how I said "My List". No one probably has the same list as me. I absolutely loved Re:Coded, it pains me to see that almost everyone dislikes it...

Angrychelseafan07 true. It did bring in some feels with Data Riku and a ton of feels with Data Roxas. D.Roxas' The Other Promise in Re:Coded is the best variant of The Other Promise imo. And my heart drops when it starts to play right before D.Roxas gets fed up with D.Sora's Gary Sue aditude. (That's another problem with this game, D.Sora is just a blind fool who does whatever he's told + he's TOO good.)
It's combat/settings are the most unique out of all of the series (not counting Re:CoM). You could level up and customize your keyblade. Different keyblades had different abilities, buffs, and debuffs, they also attacked differently. You had a slew of finishing moves.
Like in BBS, you had a command deck with a ton of magic/attack commands. The commands could level up, get stronger, and side abilities. A level 100 thundara with power up ability or c/d minus ability would be way better than a level 1 thundaga. You could make your style however you wanted.
Then you have the thing where you can change your stats. You can give yourself resistances, change your levels, and stats. Then you can change your damage output/max hp to gain experience, cp, and/or focus faster. If you could change how Sora looked, the game would have really felt like it was you who was the main character. The game was vurtually fully customizable.
Then they had dungeons that were fun as hell to play. It has the hardest after game out of all of the Kingdom Hearts series. Oh my. It took me months to be able to clear the 100 floor dungeon to get the Ultima Weapon. I stuck with this game longer than any other KH games. It also gave me the biggest sense of accomplishment. God damn, that dungeon was hard af.
I'm sorry man, usually I respect other people's opinions. However, this list is ridiculous.... Kingdom Hearts 2 at #4.... Re:Coded at #1?! Are you sure you played the series?!!
Justin Hochman Kingdom Hearts 2 is actually number 5 on this list. I'm a magic lover, and magic felt VERY UNDERWHELMING in kh 2. The only time it was good was when you were in final form, and that came, randomly, after you beat Roxas. They also have that dumb ass mp bar, I'm not a fan of it at all... They got rid of goofy's MP gift that he had in kh 1, my favourite ability that goofy had. Drive forms were cool, but I found myself turning into anti-form too much, it was really annoying not being able to use magic/items.
It also gets some negative points from me for being on console, I'm out of my house and on the go a lot, so hand helds are where it's at for me.
Replayablitiy is a thing too. I only wanted to replay kh 2 to play as Roxas again, critical mode, and for the HD remix. But for Re:Coded, they have replayablitiy built into the game, you can redo entire world's without having to restart the game, or just refight the boss. You'd be scored based off of how well you did, and it pushed me to redo it and make myself get a better score.
This list is also based off of my enjoyment of the game, not purely story, graphics, or anything else. Sure, those enhance my enjoyment, but it's all about game play/interactions for me. It's what makes a game a game. The challenge and manipulation of a character. I feel like Re:Coded did these way better than KH 2.
Twinflame Byond Kingdom Hearts 2 is considered the best game in the series by the majority of fans for a reason-- there's no debating that it is the best game. Re:Coded was basicslly a filler game man... don't compare it with Kingdom Hearts 2. (I'm not trying to be rude btw, just amazed how someone can like Re:Coded more than KH2. Even liking the original Kingdom Hearts more that KH2 is crazy to me haha)

With your argument about roxas having yellow eyes in the CG cutscene, you put bbs as number 1 for story, when for another CG cutscene (kh2fm secret ending) for bbs terra doesnt have blue/teal eyes like he normally does, which makes your example for kh1 invalid

Birth by sleep will always be number 1 for me IDC how good kh3 is birth by sleep was my first kingdom hearts game and maybe that's one of the reasons why its my favorite but the story is so good it really makes you grow attached to the characters especially how they were three best friends happy and one of them kills their own master and how all three of them had sad endings now all I ask of you square enix PLEASE DONT KILL ONE OF THE THREE FRIENDS IN KINGDOM HEARTS 3!!!! That would really get me in my feels they need a happy story I want to be able to play as them in the future again all three of them happy and how they used to be 😭❤💔

358/2 days was absolutely amazing. Roxas’s story is amazing and although some bosses were annoying (hated the boss in Halloween Town) I think everything was made up for.
My list (from worst to best):
1. Re:Coded
Unlike many gamers I play games chiefly for story reasons, which is partly why Re:Coded is so far down the list. It's story was an interesting concept but in the end it felt irrelevant and convoluted and not particularly interesting. The gameplay was alright but not great (I hated babysitting the CPU usage of the command deck and having to install level ups rubbed me wrong). Its main upside was the "backdoor" areas (AKA the glitched regions that you had to clear out to get rid of the bugs), I thought those were cool and had a blast battling the glitching heartless. Overall Re:Coded was fun but I could've lived without it.
2. Re:Chain of Memories
The story was amazing, the characters were outstanding, and the graphics were great for its time. But the gameplay was painful, I hated having to sort and re-sort my decks, the sleight system felt like a waste of attacks, and it made grinding even more painfully dull than usual. Plus the main story felt separated and cut up due to the game's different "world" system. I did like it but I hated that gameplay.
3. Kingdom Hearts 1
Amazing for the first game in the series, it had a strong cohesive story, lovable characters, and some truly amazing villains. Again, however, its gameplay was a little hard at times. The camera was clunky and hard to control, Sora's movements were clumsy and missed easily, and having to constantly flip through the command list to do what should have been reaction commands was tiresome. The gummi ship levels were tedious and the gummi garage was difficult to use. However, it set the stage for the other games and led to the fun and fast-paced gameplay of KH2. Overall it was a good game.
4. Birth By Sleep
Loved the story, loved the characters, loved the gameplay, hated how separated and incomplete the story felt when cut between Terra, Aqua and Ventus. It felt like I was playing three games instead of just one, which was irritating. And the distinct lack of companions was not something I'd like to see again. However, I still loved it a lot and I can't help but keep replaying it over and over again.
5. 358/2 Days
This one should probably have a lower place on the list. The mission system was tedious and difficult, the way that you had to pack magic casts with you and were forced to carry level ups in your backpack frustrated me, and THOSE STUPID EMERALD SERENADES AND CYMBAL MONKEYS!!! So why is it so high on the list, you ask? Several reasons. For one, as annoying as the combat system could be it had one of the best stories in the whole game and it had (in my opinion) the best main characters out of the bunch (Sea Salt trio forever!!!). Days was also the first KH game I ever played. It is what got me into the series and so it has a high nostalgia value that makes me enjoy it far more than I would have if I had played the games in order.
6. Dream Drop Distance
Love the story, love the combat system, love the characters, love the plot twists, love the villains, love the setting, love so much about this game!!! I love command decks, and this game made perfect use of them. Link attacks were fun and don't even get me started on the amazing-ness of the Flowmotion, it's easily one of my favorite aspects of the game. I even enjoyed the Dive levels, which is unusual for me. It wasn't completely without faults, however; having to constantly play with and babysit your Spirits could get on my nerves, the Drop system was obnoxious, especially during Boss battles, and Sora was far stupider than he should have been. Admit it guys, you all saw it coming. Kingdom Hearts 2. The definition of what a Kingdom Hearts game should be. It had an amazing story, complex and deep and full of twists and turns that left me constantly on the edge of my seat. Its combat system was brilliant, fast-paced and easy to use, heightened by Drive Forms and the best Summon and Limit attacks that you'll ever find. The sheer number of powerful Keyblades in the game was enough to make your mind explode, and the reflect spell was an excellent addition. Even the gummi levels were fun, fast-paced and exciting, sharply contrasting to the dullness of KH1's gummi segments. The only complaint I have is Anti-form. I hate Anti-form, it's an easy way to get yourself killed and as you have very little control over when you go into it it can trigger at the worst possible times (like in the middle of the Cavern of Remembrance while you're trying to kill four Hot Rods at once and you try to go into Master form but PSYCHE! YOU'RE A HEARTLESS NOW BUDDY MWAHAHAHA!!! And then you die because you can't heal yourself and you're not good at dodging and those things are fast and they pack a punch and can kill you in four hits)

I agree that the gameplay is amazing (in most of the games, anyway), but it's the story that really hooked me into it. I mean, I did start with 358/2 Days. The gameplay in that one is… lacking.
Lt. Basil I said "not to shit on them" though. I'd also recommend playing 358/2 Days again. While lacking it does have a fair layer of strategy with the panel customization (even if you'll spend 3 hours getting an optimal setup as well as a headache) and options like Guard being rather useful in combat. Elemental weaknesses are a thing too, and you can finish most fights quicker if you know what to use.
Personally, my favorite is the first one.

I liked its story better than 2, but 2 improved the gameplay drastically.
2, i think, made the combat a bit more messy along with its imporvements. But as for plots, 2 is a clusterfuck. no contest between 1 and 2 in the plot department.

I agree with you for most of the part about the list. I do believe that Birth By Sleep had the best writing and character development. hopefully they have that good of writing or better in 3.

I think an easy way to cap Attraction Flow would to make a small meter that drains with the use of it, while only taking a second or two to refill while idle... With the right balance between drain and refill speed, i think that could fix the problems that Flow Motion had. :)

The reason I loved BBS is the story and the characters I like how they let u choose 3 people to complete a story. Aqua is my favorite story.

***** CoM is strategic because you have to put your deck in a certain order to make it work. If you don't want to use brainless tactics such as Sonic Blade or Duels, then don't ! The game doesn't force you to do so ! Just pray for luck to get good cards and git gud without sleights if you wanna be strategic !

Everglow showed his guide on how to git gud at re:com with simple combos, showing brainless strats are worth nothing, when a boss counters your combo, break in return, if you're playing the GBA of course since in both KH2 and Re:CoM your character gets staggered so easily that you can't get away in a combo.
The game punishes you ? That is the point, my friend. What is the point in playing a game only to win and not having fun ?

The original is still my favorite.. Mainly because of it being fresh and new, timing in life, and I connected well with the worlds.. When hearing about Pirates of the Caribbean being in KH2, I was like wtf? That's a movie, not a cartoon! I am all about the Disney classics.

Eh, I still think that BBS was superior to KH2 in both gameplay and story. But I know I'm one of the few that doesn't hold KH2 as her number one.
I agree, BBB was my favorite KH game in story and combat. Loved having 3 characters. My only complaint is the ending, and perhaps terra vs the master or how it was handled

completely agree. BBS gameplay was more balanced and had alot more variation. Kh2 i was just mashing the attack button and i was playing on critical mode
+Kevin Tyson bbs gameplay isn't really balanced. aqua and ven's dodge commands were too broken, healing while guarding OP. seeker mines and mine square/shield OP, Shotlock invincibility OP, D-links OP and when you have cap damage, you just use the command style finisher that has the most hits and you rarely use normal hits it's really press triangle to win bbs. kh 2 wasn't always mashing the attack button (praise lvl 1 or low level runs for that same count for bbs) kh 2 sure has reflect, firaga spam with final form and magneta thundaga combo and limit form and thats somewhat it. KH 1 in my opinion is alittle more balanced then kh 2 and bbs though you mostly use aeroga and curaga
+HelenaeCat I'm curious; what part of BBS gameplay is better for you than 2? I've never heard that before. BBS had horrific balance issues.

The mechanics in Dream Drop Distance are really interesting. The Drop feature means that up to the final boss battles you can play as either Riku or Sora at any point in the game. You also get to play though each world twice, in some worlds exploring different areas and different storylines (Prankster’s Paradise limits Riku to Monstro’s interior wile Sora gets the fun Park and the sea bed for example). It also sets up a reveal for late in the game.
The reality warps are fun little mini games that aren’t difficult and only necessary to reach the next area or finish off the enemy very rarely. The one for the Grid is cool, and are actual lines of code that make sense for the function you set.
The Dream Eaters are an interesting addition, and add more variety to the gameplay. Very Pokemon, you can create and put different specimens to get different effects and techniques. The mini games to train them also work well if you’ve got five minutes, and the skill grid adds a level of strategy that aids you in populating your command deck, encouraging you to collect and train as many of the Dream Eaters as you can.

358/2 was my entry into the series and it's definitely my favorite of the bunch, I went in starting the game just as confused as Roxas which really set the tone for me. Also the story in my opinion is simply the best I've played in any video game as well as some of the best character development. The missions were also done well in my opinion, they really set the "work before play" mood really well which kept me addicted and really eager to see how the story unfolds. I've yet to beat BBS since my ps3 controller broke down but I've heard great things.
And of course you chose Re:CoM as the worst just because you are bad at it...
Freed Justine A lot of people don't like it because of the combat however if you can spend some time on it Chain of Memories imo is one of the most fun combat systems in the series it's just hard to master :D.
You should see what kind of a deck I had built there. It's glorious.

It is natural the 1st experience won't go so well, but if ya use your head the whole time you could actually learn from it.

If you haven't beat it yet, there is a way to cheese through the boss. Fenrir keyblade + Negative Combo. No combo pluses at all, no aerial finishers at all. Just jump and attack, if you do it right you can stunlock him so he never can attack you.

Kingdom Hearts 1 is my favorite game of all time. I was just a kid and it was the first time my emotions were truly moved by a video game.
When Sora and Kairi's hands separated in that last scene, and the music played, I bawled my eyes out

1: Original KH
Primarily for being my first game in the series. This game had a magic to it, as I felt more epic battling the darkness in this game than in any of the other games, mainly due to the music in the original being some of the best in the series.
2. BBS
Makes sense of much of the series' plot and ties it together. I am also a big fan of the KH series for the brutal secret bosses, and man are the ones in this game BRUTAL. Some of the most difficult fights in the series.
3. KH2
With the best music in the series and some of the most epic (and having easily the most brutally difficult fight in the entire series (lingering will)) fights in the series as well. The story is also a solid in this one.
