Thank you for this information, it's been quite confusing for us. We arrived to Belgium about 3 weeks ago, we indeed registered but we're not sure if we did it right (my husband is under D-visa and I'm European). Is it ok to go to the appointment even though the police officer has not come yet? I thought first the police visits you and then you go to the appointment but to you it was the other way around. We're in urgent need of the appointment to speed up the process of opening up a security deposit account for rentals, do you know about this? Thank you.

Hello! They won't retain your passports. But a piece of advice the police visit is unscheduled, so it's advisable to have your passports on hand just in case, especially since they do not announce their visit in advance.
