- After their 1995 album failed to capture the momentum that their breakdown album Blood Sugar Sex Magik did, Red Hot Chili Peppers were in a tailspin so they fired Dave Navarro and recruited original guitarist John Frusciante back into the band. At that time singer Anthony Kiedis and Flea made up with John and started their comeback album… Californication . It started out as song that Kiedis felt was his best ever lyrics but he couldn’t get the music to work. Tried 10 different arrangements but couldn’t get it. Just when they were about to finish the record John ran in and had it! the perfect music to put with lyrics. Having just relearned to play the guitar after kicking drugs, he saved Anthony’s song from the cutting room floor to return the band to #1 in 1999.

We recently did a full episode on this but For a long time now, the predominant narrative around Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 1995 release One Hot Minute is that it was a letdown. Some even see at as an all-out failure. Coming on the heels of the massive Blood Sugar Sex Magik, a lot of people inside and out of the music industry have pegged it as a commercial failure. But that's a pretty harsh and unfair assessment. After all the Dave Navarro era record sold over 2 million copies in America. And it spawned three Top Ten singles on the US Alternative chart, including the #1 hit My Friends.
But since the release of One Hot Minute, the Chili Peppers seemed to be in a downward spiral. And in particular, things hadn’t been going well with guitarist Dave Navarro. A Jane’s Addiction alum, Navarro had come aboard to replace the disaffected John Frusciante. But by 1998, Navarro and the band weren’t clicking, and bassist Flea and lead singer Anthony Kiedis decided that it was time to part ways… Navarro didn’t take the news very well. Even though he knew it wasn’t working, according to Kiedis, “the verbalization of the reality pissed him off to no end.”
But the thing is, the departure of Navarro left the future of the band in jeopardy. Their momentum had all but stalled. And Flea was close to calling it quits. Going through a rough patch of his own, personally and professionally, he told Anthony that he didn’t think he could do it anymore. But then he dropped a bomb Kiedis didn’t see coming. “The only way I could imagine carrying on is if we got John [Frusciante] back in the band.” “Why would John ever want to come back and play with us?”, Anthony asked Flea.
Kiedis and Frusciante had once been close friends. But after John’s bitter departure, they hadn’t had much contact. And Anthony had been hearing a lot of horror stories about John’s descent into a drug hell. But Flea was sure John was on the verge of turning things around. - บันเทิง

Californication is the first Chili’s album I ever owned. I never took too much interest in them before but Scar Tissue was in steady rotation on most stations and music 📺. I was becoming a fan. I bought the album and have since explored their entire catalog. I’m easily what you would consider a superfan at this point. Just enjoyed their live performance in Seattle Washington. Amazing! So, glad they’re healthy and working. ❤️❤️❤️
I am extremely similar to this. I was already nearly 20 when Californication came out. So it's not like I didn't know the band inside and out and probably even owned BSSM. But def not any kind of actual fan before Californication. That album got me. I still listen to it.

Inspirational comeback story and a great band. Rare for ex bandmates to bury the hatchet after such a nasty split, but we can be thankful for this exception!

RHCP are notably one of the best Alt Rock 90's bands! They are funky and they groove, they write meaningful songs, catchy melodies, solid musicianship all they way around. How can you not love and appreciate them! Californication all the way Baby- haha :)

RHCP were awesome. It's such a shame they fell off that cliff, caught fire on the way down and all burned to death so horribly in that accident around 2000 or so. It was a really sad end for one of the best bands of the 80s and 90s.

Saw them on the " By the way" tour. The tightest band Iv'e heard play live. The Queens of the stone age surprised opened the show and blew everyone away. Took a half hour to reset the stage then the Peppers slayed the St. Louis blues arena.

I was at that one, Mara Volta were there also. I was right up to the stage, general admission. John sat on the end of the stage for Under The Bridge encore. Best concert experience I’ve ever had.

This album and those songs changed music for me. I was just a 14 year old who had just got my first guitar and was getting out of my Limp Bizkit/kid rock/korn phase all my friends were still listening to. I remember being at camp (Ontatio) and some older college kids were listening to Scar Tissue at the beach and those opening notes just resonated with me. Then I knew I had to go out and buy the CD with my parent's money. I still remember the first time hearing this song (track 6) listening on my discman wearing late 90's headphones and just being blown away at how beautiful the guitar and bass were together. It was like nothing else I have ever heard at the time. Music was still new to me. I brought that album to my guitar teacher and told him I wanted to learn those songs but first he said I needed to learn some basic chords first. Scar Tissue was actually the first song he taught me how to play after a week or 2 learning open chords.
Youre right tho at the time this video was so innovative. I didnt realise at the time but coming of age in the late 90's will always be something that I cherish.
The Chili Peppers were my Beatles.
What a band, being a teenager in the 90s which were bookended by BSSM and Californication was the best.
My older brother got me into BSSM, then he was almost beaten to death, it set me on a path that seen me learn guitar just so I could play under the bridge for him. He recovered and I found a lifelong hobby and a band that always spoke to me and made things make sense even if I didn't understand what was being said half the time. Keep on rocking chillis, definitely one of a kind.
John was inspired by The Cure for the Californication riff. He was listening to a lot of the early stuff, but particularly the instrumental piece called Carnage Visors.
I grew up in California. This album always takes me back to high school, and it's been musical comfort food ever since. Great video about a great album, and I'm happy that John Frusciante was able to come back from the brink.
This record cemented Anthony as not just a fantastic writer, but a fantastic poet.

Very interesting post today, very philosophical observance of a philosophical song. I got the feeling of the quality of light that shines down on the streets of LA whether it is a Beverly Hills mansion or a tent encampment.

I absolutely LOVED this album, played it on loop constantly, I was always driving between Sydney and Brisbane (9 hours roughly) and played this one along side Cold Chisel’s greatest, singing myself hoarse😂 Still an awesome album that you just never get sick of.
Thank you for this informative and entertaining video! I love it! I have a lots of memories with this album. When it came out I was 17 and when I heard “Otherside” and the song “Californication” the first time on the radio I was hooked. Those melodies, that bass play, this guitar and sound touched my soul like nothing before. When I turned 18 in July of 2000 and was allowed to drive and officially go out to bars and clubs (that’s how it was in Germany) it was the soundtrack of these days to me. Always had the album playing in my car. The hot summer nights at the lake, driving in the melting heat of the summer with windows down bcs. my car didn’t have an AC, when I picked up my first dates with my own car, experiencing my first kisses outside, laying in the grass watching stars, exploring the nightlife of different cities, meeting new friends outside my hometowm etc. It was the soundtrack of the most exiting summer I ever had. What a wonderful summer. Never thought about “later” just enjoying the moments without anything else. Every day felt magical and ever lasting. Every single time I hear something from this album it takes me back to those days. I miss them so much and at the same time I’m thankful for that experiences. This album will always be outstanding and special to me/ for me.

I was probably in the 7th or 8th grade when this album came out and I remember when I first heard the song "Californication" on the radio. I immediately went out and bought the album, this was when I was transitioning my music style from mainly pop to rock and alternative. It was a major driving force and influence for me, in my formative years. ❤️ Thank you for doing this one!

I was 13 when this album came out and it was one of the first CDs that I bought. I saw the music video for “Scar Tissue” on MTV (man do I feel old typing that) and was hooked. Still one of my favorite albums of all time and my favorite Chili Peppers album.
It is great that the group remained strong and maintained their friendship.

This was the album that made me finally go ahead on picking up a guitar and learn to play it, also a strat from guitar center
Their best album by far. Saw them New Year's 1999/2000 at the Forum with 311. Such a great show!
I listened to Californication when I was 10 years old. I went on a road trip to the beach with a friend of mine and his family and his older brother had just gotten the CD and we listened to the album the whole time we were in the car. I used to go to music school and study music and piano without ever really liking it too much, but that album changed my life and made me discover a whole new world of music. I quickly became obsessed with pop music and for the past 12 years I have been working in the music industry. I owe this album so so much!
This group has always managed to have songs that withstand the test of time. The other day my 14 year old was singing along with me in the car to RHCP. Makes me feel good that they enjoy real music and not the crap that comes out these days...rock on brother!

This song came out when I was about 15 and marked the beginning of my musical taste really becoming my own. I'd previously just listened to whatever was on the radio, but this song- and album- made such an impact on me. They've remained my favourite band since then and shaped my musical journey
Took my son and daughter on Sept to see the red hot chili peppers in Arlington TX. It was our first time seeing the peppers live. One of the greatest experiences of my life, getting to see my favorite band of all time with my kids. I'll forever remember that weekend. Hope my kids tell their kids about it one day... * 🌶

Love the video! Always thought that One Hot Minute was super underrated. Just wanted to point out though that John Frusciante was not the original guitarist. That honor goes to the late Hillel Slovak. He's the reason that Flea picked up a bass guitar in the first place as he played the trumpet before joining the band.

I love the song. I also remember John said in an interview that the guitar riff was inspired by the instrumental track Carnage Visors by The Cure. I’d heard both before and it blew my mind that I’d never made the connection.

The melody finally came to John when he was sitting around listening to The Cure. I always find it interesting that their 2 most popular songs were both written lyrically first, Under The Bridge being the other. That's pretty rare for them. Usually either John will come up with an interesting idea on the guitar, or Flea will on the bass or piano, then it will evolve throughout rehearsals
John Frusciante changed my Life in many ways, his music got my head on the right track. His solo work is incredibly prolific, he released like 3 amazing albums in one year. Provided me with so many melodies that danced in and out of minor
I remember thinking Anthony was talking to me on get on top and hearing otherside helped me out of a depressed period in my teenage years. The album stands up today against many greats and is definitely one of my favourite albums. Actually made me want to learn to play guitar.
It’s why I love songs like this that speak to me and make me feel like the music is comforting me.

I unintentionally seem to have time stamped my life in songs 🎵 some sad ones, some that instantly bring back the moments I first heard them and some can transport me back completely. There is always something new to learn about yourself and your environment and I find music helps me do so in many ways.

So much to say I’m posting twice. Lol
I too, went out and bought this on day of release. I was a few days from moving to Fresno California where a friend I had lived. Moving there from the east coast. The night before I was going to leave, I met someone and I decided to postpone. That postpone became permanent, even if the relationship didn’t, and it has become the best thing that could have happened to me. Over two decades later, I thank GOD that I chose to stay. That’s probably the biggest reason I never forget the days I had this album on repeat; it hit at a changing point in my life, where things went right for me.
When I bought the “Californication” CD, I got in my van and popped it in to listen on the short drive from Norman, Ok to OKC. They had ne at the first chord. Flea and John rocking the opening to “Around the World” had me transfixed. Chad full on crashing the drum set. Then Anthony lets out the scream and by the time he finished screaming and started the lyrics, I was crying with joy. Literally crying tears of joy that John was back and that they sounded so good again. I don’t hate “One Hot Minute” or Dave Navarro, but that always felt like a alternate reality version of RHCP.

As crazy as it sounds, I don't think I have heard Californication all the way through! I love the richness of the imagery in the lyrics! TRHCP has always had a unique sound. My grown sons have been asking what to get me for Christmas.
Californication was my first cd post cassette tapes. My #1 inspiration and at 9 years I picked up a guitar and haven’t stopped strumming since lol😅

The song that stays with me is Californication, the flow on that song is amazing. How any record company exec. could walk out of a room after hearing that and not realize how great it is, is absurd to me.

This album was the soundtrack of the summer i graduated high school. Great times
I knew a couple of their songs before this but Californication was where I became a fan. It was a massive hit in the UK too and should have been a number one. Otherside is possibly my favourite track of theirs.
Saw them live at Manchester City's stadium and they put on a fantastic live set. James Brown supported so your t--shirt is very appropriate. :-)

Saw the Peppers play in Melbourne for the Big Day Out Festival in 2000. Blink 182, Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails as well as others played that year. By far the best was NIN opening for RHCP though. Both bloody awesome!

Back when Scar Tissue was released as a single, I was working nightshift. My alarm went off around 9:00 one night and Scar Tissue was playing. I didn't know it was RHCP but I was mesmerised. I bought the album first chance I got. Still one of my favourites.
I had a similar experience. I was a huge fan after Mothers milk and Blood sugar sex Magik, but the One Hot Minute album I really wasn’t into and I kind of stopped listening to the chili peppers for a few years. Then one day driving around I heard Scar Tissue playing on the radio and it re-ignited my love for the band. I was so excited to find out John had rejoined and they had a new album coming out. Californication and By the Way are my favorite records, Stadium Arcadium was incredible and the RHCP are just about my favorite band on earth the last 25 years.
@@robriginio530 I have a similar story I got into them with mothers milk and Bssm still is one my favourite albums of all time. I thought Ohm was OK but thought it was all over and i lost interest.. Few years later I was watching a program in UK called TFI Friday at a friend's house. The chili's came on playing scar tissue live and I was totally memorised and found my love for them all over again. My girlfriend and at the time and I bounded over their music. And it led us on an amazing musical journey, seeing them live countless times. I still miss her but have great memories thanks to their music

You need to interview the great Billy Davis. He's a 3 time hall of fame winner, Doowop, Rock & Roll and Blues, I believe. The man has been there through it all, he's mentored so many young musicians, including Jimi Hendrix, teaching him so many of his impresario tricks. Billy is a brilliant artist still, even at the age of 84. He is a font of music history, rock history, Motown history, blues history. Don't know how much longer he'll be with us, but you should interview him.

This is my favorite of all RHCP songs. So much so, I sing it at karaoke and it kind of surprises people since most everyone stumbles over the lyrics in a normal setting. 🤣

First got into the RHCP when a buddy introduced me to Mothers Milk. Fan ever since. Love Californication.
I was introduced to RHCP by the now legendary skateboard movie Thrashin'.They were rocking Black Eyed Blonde in the local club. I've been hooked on them ever since.
Californication is fabulous due to John Frusciante being back with the band. I've got their next record By The Way as my personal fav RHCP album... once again the mood, melody and vocals John provides give so much depth. Venice Queen is the gem not enough people talk about...

By The Way is my favorite too. Particularly the 2nd half. I can't quite describe the way it makes me feel, but it creates a certain atmosphere, a mood, and it feels amazing. Particularly the last 4 songs (minor thing, on mercury, warm tape, Venice queen) 🤌🏼😚

I loved the album prior ONE HOT MINUTE. I thought Dave Navarro was so rad. I was 11 or 12 about the time OHM came out so Navarro was the definitive RHCP guitarist to me. I was hurt when I found out he had been let go. I remember I was watching some show on MTV where they had a bunch of musicians’ parents on it (I forget the name of the show). Anthony Kiedis’s father was on an episode and let the truth out that John Frusciante was back in the fold and they were working on a new album. This was around late ‘97 or early ‘98 and I hadn’t heard anything from any magazines or radio stations during the time so I was skeptical to believe… I didn’t want to. I wanted Dave.
I remembered in the spring of ‘99 without any fanfare or introduction I saw the video for “Scar Tissue” as it premiered on MTV. It was the coolest video I had ever seen. The guys looked beat up cruising through a desert road. I remember the minimalist sounding slide guitar solo. It sounded big and open. I thought Anthony sang so beautifully during that song. Each note pulled at my heart string and vibrated within my soul. I couldn’t wait for the album to be released so that I could hear it again and again whenever I wanted. That whole album wasn’t as upbeat as I wanted, but it gave me such a strong feeling every time I listened to it. It was the soundtrack of my summer. Man, to be a teenager again. Music rarely hits me like it did back when I was younger.

Scar Tissue forever remains one of my all time favorite music videos, so good. Was it that show "Help! My Kids A Rockstar"? If so, they have Blackie's episode on TH-cam
I thought "One Hot Minute" was a killer album, too! Smokin' stuff.
As soon as I saw this album out, I gave it a listen in the shop and was blown away by Parallel Unvierse. Couldn't believe when it didn't get released as a single. Underrated in my book, but maybe it's just my style.
It’s one of their coolest songs.
The album is full of great songs, top to bottom. I think besides “Parallel Universe,” “Easily” could have easily (pun intended) been a single as well.
It's a good thing they played it live a great deal during the 2002-2004 period. So many amazing versions.

For me as a 15yo in 95, living down hear in New Zealand we thought One Hot Minute was sick. The Chilli's as we would say with Dave Navarro from Jane's Addiction on guitar how awesome 👌 Went to the live show at the SuperTop and it was Epic.
The more I learn about this band, the more I like them. For an L.A. denizen, they really speak to me. Under the Bridge is still my favorite.
