  • Life is too short to drive boring cars so when my childhood dream supercars came up for sale I drove cross country to buy it. Its completely thrashed, crashed and even FIRE damaged. Oh! Did I mention I don't fit in it? This is going to get interesting.

    Long story this one...
    I've sat in this exact car. I was looking into buying a gtm coupe but was concerned if I was going to fit or not (6ft 4") . A chap in Devon had one that he let me visit and sit in, the one I was going to look at was in Southampton and this one was closer to me.
    If I remember right it did catch fire and did have a metro turbo engine fitted when I looked at it. He was also the one who repaired the rear end!
    You won't fit in it with the sunroof + mechanism in place.
    Lotus elise seats on modified universal bucket seat mounts are what you need to get you sitting as low as possible, ask me how I know 😉
    Might give me some inspiration to get working on mine again.

    Great project, it takes me back to when my dad and I did up an MG Roadster. I had sold my 1976 Fiat 124 Sport to partly pay for it. We got it shipped from San Fransisco to Tasmania. I have a photo that looks a lot like the condition yours is in now, I loved that white MG. I drove it whenever I was back in Tassie on leave from the Army and when I finished my full-time service it took me all through my 4 years of Uni and to my very first teaching job. That car was a fun part of my younger life. Cars create great memories.

    The mini subframe did provide surprisingly good steering and suspension performance, but if you're putting anything more powerful than an engine from one of those old Minis or a derivative engine from a Rover, then you'll want to reinforce it front and rear either way. You'd probably also want to reinforce the cockpit as well just to reduce flex when cornering. Luckily, the aftermarket community for the classic Mini is very strong, so finding replacement and uprated parts for those subframes won't be particularly challenging.

  • @davidmarshall6538

    I agree about test sitting in any car I’m looking to buy. I’m only 6’ but 100kg and mid 60’s in age and I need to be able to get in and out, with ease. I just looked at an Australian built Ford Model A tourer but it had been set up for a much smaller guy so the front seat tub was set forward and high. The seat tubs are semi structural and, whilst they can be moved, it is a lot of work. I couldn’t get in or out with any degree of ease. Once I did manage to get in I could drive it but not comfortably. I had to say no to it. As to your car, I think it’s fantastic and am looking forward to watching it’s progress.

      @OliverPickard  หลายเดือนก่อน

  • @delukxy
    @delukxy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Before you were born I went and had a look at one of these that was for sale locally to me. It was complete and driveable. I took a "BMC" mechanic with me to look it over and give an opinion. I could have bought it for £325. We decided not to. The build just hadn't had enough money spent on it and there were far to many used parts or poor engineering. Mind you, that is how so many of them and other kit cars were built back then. They are not the most competent cars to drive and the heavy back end and short wheelbase makes them easy, too easy, to lose when it's wet or the road is bumpy. It's not really mid engined. I knew you were gong to get round to saying that your height and the car would be a poor match! There wasn't much room for my 5'10"" . You'll have to make do with a moulded floor and an overlay made from 2CV seats. At least there is a bit of room around the pedals which is more than can be said for the Marcos and the Midas that I looked at years later. I think that the late Midas Gold is a better car, much more capable and even usable as a daily with cross Europe potential. Potential the wrong word as it has been used for that many times.
    I look forward to your progress on this. First job is to sharpen up your welding skills and rebuild the chassis, making sure it is straight, square and strong. Good luck. As said there is an enthusiastic club I think but possibly not too many members.

    • @OliverPickard
      @OliverPickard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no saving much of the chassis and there is alot to improve for example mini cones a far too firm on the front and a standard 1275 is a bit of a boat anchor but in 2020 I have time and technology on my side. Fear not I have a cunning plan
