I think I was 2 episodes in when I realized that this was my favorite TV show of all time, maybe my favorite series of any sort of all time? For those of you who don't know spaced on a series of books written by Douglas Adams who is a God amongst men of book writing, (he also wrote Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy which is amazing of course...) The book series is pretty far out there, at least as far out there as the 2nd season of the TV show… possibly more. What I'm trying to say is you should check out Douglas Adams. Ps... be nice to homeless people. You never know.
They're making an animated series that won't be a continuation but will be in the expanded universe (like the comic series is an alternate reality from the Netflix show)
Outstanding essay! What a great exploration into why Dirk works so damn well and has connected with so many people. The result of how Max found an emotional entryway to such an outlandish central character and his insane reality is so bizarrely organic. Great work on the video, hope to see more!!!
i think they’re more neutral. sure they help the sister, but when it comes to anyone else they don’t really seem to care what they do to them. in turn dirk would be chaotic good, bart chaotic evil.
Maybe I got too involved with Todd at the start but despite his past of awful things, I still feel really bad for him, as he got a job as a bellhop to try and support his sister and especially when he got his first pararibulitis attack :(
"we all get shot with harpoons" - where's MY harpoon?? I'm missing out!! D: (way to sneak that in there, had to rewatch a few times cuz I didn't believe it. still laughing!)
Watched it with my family over quarantine. I absolutely loved it! I know some people dont like Dirk but I found him (and most of the other characters)so relatable. I've spent a lot if my life feeling like I'm just kind of wandering between strange, kinda chaotic events and whether I help them happen or just happen to be part of them is never really clear.the show captured the feeling of frustration spending a pot of your life being utterly confused SO well. I wish there had been a third season, I will miss these characters dearly.
Man this show needs to go on. I'd hate to find an underrated awesome show just to watch it dying before it unleashes it's full potential. I need need to see how badly hugo will fuck things up, please.
Max / his Twitter brought me here, this is an awesome breakdown of his writing style in general! I highly recommend you check out some of the movies he's credited as a screenwriter on outside of Chronicle, as well as the one he directed, Me Him Her. A lot of the same kinds of characters are featured as protagonists in those films :D
*giggles* Yeah, I'd say that sums it up. Everyone on this show has their flaws and dark secrets and emotional neuroses cottages (Max's words, not mine), but it makes them that much more human. They're great to watch, both for the comedy and the drama. It's just fun. :)
OneWingedRose if you love this show please watch the s2 on netflix (if you don't have an account, the 1st month is free) or hulu if you live on the us. you can also suggest a s3 for dirk gently here: help.netflix.com/en/titlerequest and sign the petition here: www.change.org/p/netflix-renew-dirk-gently-s-holistic-detective-agency-for-season-3-future-seasons?recruiter=269519066&
I felt that way about the main characters in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Buffy was once the popular girl in her school. But after the school gymnasium caught on fire, her boyfriend dumped her, she lost her father in a divorce and moved to a new school, she's definitely the odd girl out. She wants to forget the slaying and resume a normal life. But when a vampire targets Willow she just can't do it. She gets labeled as a freak by the popular girl Cordelia and after that her life is a never-ending cycle of barely average grades, a poor social life and a twisted romantic relationship (see: Angel). Willow is a brainiac who's ignored by most boys especially the one she really loves. Xander is a clown whose parents fight and is looked down on by almost everyone at school. Mr. Giles is a foreigner in stuffy tweed whose one romantic relationship went up in flames when a vampire killed her (and, no, his one-night stand with Joyce DOESN'T count). Angel is also a loser. He shuns other vampires; he had to stake his sire and his antagonist attitude towards other demons means he can't make friends with them. He suffers from guilt because of his demonic other half and has to leave the love of his life because her mother told him to do so. Even Cordelia gets toppled off her pedestal when her dad is hauled up on tax evasion charges. She can't go to any of the fancy colleges she applied to because she has no money to do so. Yep, total losers the whole lot of them.
I am forever grateful to Max Landis for creating this masterpiece of a show! I can only wish that he gets another chance to continue making more amazing seasons of it..
WARNING: Overly long personal review follows. I didn't mean to, it just happened this way. I finally watched through the first season after having previously given up a few months ago around episode two. I'm not going to lie, neither show is a perfect representation of the books (honestly, I don't care about that, I just want the damn thing to be good). I don't mean the shows have to be "faithful" to the story or characters, but the overall spirit of the books. The books are bat-shit crazy paranormal adventures with the clever and witty dialogue we expect from Adams. The Stephen Mangan version's strength is its ability to capture Douglas Adams' style of humour. It's full of that clever dialogue and the show nearly feels as if Adams wrote their lines. That's an impressive feat. The scenarios are still funny and crazy, but the show doesn't have much of the supernatural weirdness (I think they didn't have the budget for it, or it could just be stylistic reasons, I don't know). While I think the final two episodes have their moments of character development, everyone more or less ends up exactly where they began. It's not a bad thing exactly, but I can see why people might feel the characters to feel more stale because of it. However, it was unjustly canceled after only four episodes so maybe that's not a fair critique. Overall, I think it's the superior show if you're looking for humor. The Samual Barnett better version captures the wacky paranormal adventure spirit of the books (probably because these guys had a budget to play with). This version is still funny, but I find the humor is mainly due to how crazy everything is. The dialogue tries to funny, but I think it pales compared to the wit of the previous show. I guess my sense of humor is more geared towards the style of Mangan's show. BUT!!! This show grew on me. A LOT! The overall story is intriguing, and I think this video sums up wonderfully why this show is great: the characters. Barnett's version has more character development, and I got sucked into their stories. Everybody ends up in a different place than where they began, and their journey is wacky and entertaining as hell to watch! It's a wonderful ensemble cast, and I'm ready for Season 2! But fair warning... If you decide to watch this show, don't be surprised if you find this version of Dirk to be too childlike and completely obnoxious... because he is. But I guess he's supposed to be. I suppose he never had the chance to "grow up" like other people. Long explanation short, each show has its own specialty of focus. Having watched both versions, I can clearly see how people can prefer one and not like the other. Personally, I like them both, but for different reasons.
I Love it Sooo much and am just about to watch it all again as... DEVISTATION.. There is No 3rd Series... Yet! Amazing Characters, Gifted Storyline, Suspense, Comedy, Thrills n Chills, Sarcasm, Truth, Life Lessons... Need I go on!!!! Watch and Enjoy Peeps.. Be Safe, Be Lucky.. It's All Connected 🤫 He He He 😜
I was missed by a harpoon once, so I’m pre-disastered. Am I the only one who observes that Todd and Amanda (bro + sis) appear more like lovers than siblings when they’re together? 🤔
Kendrawlotz if you love this show please watch the s2 on netflix (if you don't have an account, the 1st month is free) or hulu if you live on the us. you can also suggest a s3 for dirk gently here: help.netflix.com/en/titlerequest and sign the petition here: www.change.org/p/netflix-renew-dirk-gently-s-holistic-detective-agency-for-season-3-future-seasons?recruiter=269519066&
*I watch this video after 3 years* *The Dirk Gently (2016) the season 1 is great & it's a kind of si fi comedy but it's season 2 is 99.9% different from the first one because it's a Fantasy comedy & yes in both of them thier is no Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency (no detective stuff) &&& season 1 is far more better than season 2 (it's good but not even stand in front of season 1)*
It's not a bad show, in fact I enjoy it except one little thing. It's not Dirk Gently at all. I don't know why they use them name Dirk Gently when this is about as far as you can get from DNA's work.
HeroSquad1millionA.D. yeah after watching the show I picked up the book and found that its almost entirely different. both are good but I do agree that it couldve been done with just not dirk and entirety different charcters
I think on the surface they seem completely different-- I watched the show and then read "The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul", so I may be biased-- but I have to say that I think that the show actually captured the tone of the books perfectly. The characters and locations may be different from the books, but to me the show just "gets" Douglas Adam's style in a way that the other Dirk Gently adaptation didn't. I think it is appropriate to use the name, as the TV show is a direct interpretation of the tone, themes, type of humor, and awesome super-contrived mysteries of the books.
I agree with you about this show captures everything from the books except for the humor. I think the previous adaptation better captured Adams' quality wit and wordplay in the dialogue. And even if half of the four episode were set in plain reality without any sc-fi, they still managed to create the scenarios downright outrageous and hilarious! I think the older show feels as if Adams could have written the humor, and so I think it captured half the the books' spirit. However, I still agree with you about everything else. The new one is a roller-coaster of bizarre mixed with darkness that feels more in line with a Dirk Gently novel. I just think the comedy was a bit off. It's zany, but doesn't have the smart wit. But I think the newer show feels as if Adams could have written the storyline, and so I think this version better captured the other half of the books' spirit. Basically, I don't think either are "perfect" representations of the books, but they are both damn fine Dirk Gently shows in their own right!
Yeah, I can see that. I agree, the humor in DGHDA is less witty than the previous adaptation and more bizarre. I do think that the new series has a lot of humor based around subverted expectations, like a lot of Adams' humor in HHGTTG. When Max Landis writes his own humor into the script-which is often-it's a lot more zany and contemporary than Adams' humor, which suits this show but not the tone of the books so much, and I have a feeling it's somewhat of an acquired taste to people not expecting that kind of style.
It's awesome until season 2. Shame that we didn't get a season 3. I fully and wholly blame season 2 for this show being canceled. Season 2 was filled with absolute trash writing. I wouldn't renew a show after that trainwreck either I don't blame them for canceling it
while that a great character has depth; progression doesn't happen. The neurosis are used as convenient plot mover not a character building . I don't know why Dirk is a flamboyant Dr Who type who is too abrasive to even find interesting . . . the message of go with the flow or face consequences is ham fisted
"We all get shot by harpoons".
and "stop being dogs."
Is that just me, does that not happen to everyone
Ugh. Every god damn time!
Nope, I'm still a dog. I did stop being a newt though.
Not a dog anymore But know I'm a shark in a kitten
"You'll stop being a dog"
yes I remember it well, I was just 5 years old when I stopped being a dog, it was such a relieve
I think I was 2 episodes in when I realized that this was my favorite TV show of all time, maybe my favorite series of any sort of all time? I only found out about him by finding out about this show... Now he's my favourite writer and guru. All hail the D.A.!

Please someone pick this up for a 3rd season! Please!
Even the director felt he couldn't fully capture douglas adams' vision, so I doubt it will ever return.
They're making an animated series that won't be a continuation but will be in the expanded universe (like the comic series is an alternate reality from the Netflix show)
Not gonna work whitout Max.
I suddenly realize why I love the characters so much
One of the most underrated TV shows ! Love this show SO much
Outstanding essay! What a great exploration into why Dirk works so damn well and has connected with so many people. The result of how Max found an emotional entryway to such an outlandish central character and his insane reality is so bizarrely organic. Great work on the video, hope to see more!!!
Thank you!!
2:01 A dead shot the american education system has failed. -storytime 2017
Accurate character description tho haha
Yeah, such a drag always getting shot by harpoons. I wish someone would do something about that.
Just stop being a whale. If that doesn't work, bite me!
"You stop being a dog"
Edward Elric crying in the distance
Saw Elijah mention this video in an interview! A nice breakdown / summary of the characters 😊
That's it. That's the show.
I wish I did Rimmer's villain monologue for my audition for the school musical now, it would've been so much fun
theres a reason why the title sequence says "Dork Gently" before the I fully forms
Omg i love you for making this!!! More people should watch this show! Max Landis did an amazing job on this!!! 💖💖💖💖
The Rowdy 3 storyline is one of the most wholesome chaotic things and I love it. They’re the embodiment of Chaotic Good
i think they’re more neutral. sure they help the sister, but when it comes to anyone else they don’t really seem to care what they do to them. in turn dirk would be chaotic good, bart chaotic evil.
@@obscure.reference Bart is not chaotic evil imo, she knows everyone she kills are evil people, she's more like the punisher antihero
Hey this was really on point! I totally didn't realize it, but it's true, no character is a stereotype, but has at least one other dimension to them.
Great video!loved that part about Zimmerfield and Estevez's aptitude foiling their progress.
*sniffle
In a world full of oddballs, it is the normal ones who don't fit in!
I am so addicted to the show. It is still such a sad sad thing that they did not continue to show farther. I love this show
Maybe I got too involved with Todd at the start but despite his past of awful things, I still feel really bad for him, as he got a job as a bellhop to try and support his sister and especially when he got his first pararibulitis attack :(
Wow... Thank you for this, brb I'm gonna rewatch all of it now
i really don't get this show but i'm glad many people seem to like it
That's the spirit buddy :)
That's an awesome attitude to have, my man!
People with this kind of attitude make the world a better place.
Carlos accept your inner weirdness
"we all get shot with harpoons" - where's MY harpoon?? I'm missing out!! D:
(way to sneak that in there, had to rewatch a few times cuz I didn't believe it. still laughing!)
Your harpoon is out there somewhere waiting for you, don't worry!
Yeah, I was relating to every single line, then this one slipped in! Pretty funny, now I'm paranoid...
Everything about this show was amazing! The music! The characters! The story!
Watched it with my family over quarantine. I absolutely loved it! I know some people dont like Dirk but I found him (and most of the other characters)so relatable. I wish there had been a third season, I will miss these characters dearly.
Just finished the first season and this describes why it's awesome so perfectly.
"we all get shot by harpoons"
"you'll stop being a dog"
No, we're not. Sadly.
this is it EXACTLY.
Man this show needs to go on. I'd hate to find an underrated awesome show just to watch it dying before it unleashes it's full potential. I need need to see how badly hugo will fuck things up, please.
SO GOOD! Can't believe you only have 118 views from the time I came over from Max's twitter. GOOD! JOB! Subscribed 😊
Thank you!!
For sure! I noticed it a lot in Me Him Her and American Ultra too, those movies both seem so much simpler than they are once you actually watch them.
*giggles* Yeah, I'd say that sums it up. Everyone on this show has their flaws and dark secrets and emotional neuroses cottages (Max's words, not mine), but it makes them that much more human. They're great to watch, both for the comedy and the drama. It's just fun. :)
4:55 that scene cracked me up when I first saw it and it just did it again, perfect :D
We need season 3
Awesome video. Was brought by the Max Landis tweet, but glad I stayed for the analysis. Really good video essay.
Thank you!!
this is so good and so on point!!
This is a very thorough and thoughtful analysis, kudos to you sir
Oh my! Where have I been, for I not know this show untill now!?
I thought the best part of the show besides the writing is definately the music!
The algorithm is clearly stalking me. I literally just finished watching the series for a second time and it is so damn good!
Well said! You summed up a lot of what I love about this show well.
Here from Max's twitter, nice vid, shall now watch all of your other vids.
Thank you, I appreciate it :D

This! That's on of the reasons why BtVS is one of my favourite tv series ever. BTW are you the famous B/A fanfic writer :)
I am forever grateful to Max Landis for creating this masterpiece of a show!
I can only wish that he gets another chance to continue making more amazing seasons of it..
Great job dude, gotta love Landis.

I like season 1 and watching season 2 and I really want a season 3.
*Dirk Gently*
In which everyone is a loser
I've like watched it 5 times over help
Oh right that's it. Who wants to make a Dirk Gently fanfic? Like this show seriously needs a continuation.
by far my favorite thing about this show is that they hired alison thornton to just play a dog the entire time
Oh i love this show!!! ❤❤❤
Douglas Adams meets Max Landis, what's not to like?
This is such a great video
I love this
If so can you please finish the Twitch Plays Pokemon series well the finished ones please

The rowdy three, whoever many members they have, are flawless and don't count
My closet online friend that the second season of this show is so bad he swore off of the entire medium of television shows until The Boys.
jeez this video is gold
Great analysis!!!
Loved the British version but this was so great. Really rated this show.🎆🎆🎆
keepém coming (seasons)
It's done unfortunately 😭
Is this worth watching compared to the British series with Stephan Magnan?

Great video . Well done! You just earned a new subscriber.
I saw it 4 times
Could that possibly be why it was such a failure?
Love it dude! Also here from Max Landis' twitter! Checking out your other stuff :)
Aw thank you :D
