What a small world. That lady warned me about thieves but I thought she was joking. I was more careful after that. Thanks for viewing my video on Visit To My Grandfather's Village In Hoiping, China. All the best to you in the New Year 2018.
Dan Seto What a small world indeed! That lady is my family's close friend! I'm so glad I came across this video, keep it up! Happy New Year and all the best to you.
You're very welcome. Great to hear you are a Seto/Szeto and your roots are from the same region. Your support is greatly appreciated. Best wishes for a fantastic New Year in 2018.
Yes, my grandfather was a very hard working, good person. He was admired by many people. Thanks for viewing my video on Visit To My Grandfather's Village.
Hi Dan. This is a great video. I’m a Seto also and my family is from the Sai Hing Lay village. I never knew there was a book about the Seto villages in China. Do you know how I would be able to acquire a copy of that book? I would love to see the pictures and share the contents of it with my family. Thanks.
This book is probably in the Seto Library in Chikan Town. I was there last year but I'm not sure if they are still open because the whole town has been shut down for renovation. I tried to look up your village but couldn't find it in the book. I asked my mom and she hasn't heard of it either. Many of the villages have more recent names but many are under a different name in previous times. I'll keep my eyes open to see if I can find it. Thanks for viewing my video on Visit Grandfather's Village In Hoiping, China.
Greetings to you in Saskatchewan. Have you heard of Bateman, Saskatchewan? It's a ghost town now, but my grandfather ran a restaurant and grocery store there a long time ago. I'll be going there, hopefully after the Pandemic settles down. Thanks for viewing y video on Visit Grandgfather's Village In Hoiping, China.
Amazing video, my mom mention that there is a village call "Canda village" in Hoiping, near chikan. Perhaps it might be this village. I do not know my my mom's village name. My mom also mention that over sea szeto or situ donate money to build a school and she went to school there. I forgot the name of the school, perhaps your grandfather might be one of the many donators. I did a research about where szeto originated from and it said it was originated from ancient chinese title situ and it was from western zhou dynasty. I'm a situ myself. 司徒. My mom mention that her village is 15 minutes alway from this village. Do you have any plans to visit Kaiping soon?
Great to hear you are a Situ (Mandarin for Seto) There is a village known as Canada Village which I haven't visited but I hope to one day. I think that school would be the Middle School but I'll have to ask my mom where it's located. If your mom knows the Chinese name of her village my mom would most likely know where it is. The legend of the story you researched was that they settled in Hoiping (Kaiping) where the rooster crowed. I did a video on that place but I will be doing a more comprehensive one in the future. Probably when things settle down a bit, I'll be going to Kaiping (Hoiping) again. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Thanks for checking out my video.
@@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV Yes the school was a middle school before. I show my mom one of your videos where you were visiting your grandpa's village. My mom's village name is Lian Tang Du Dui Dong Hua li, and the middle school name was Jiao Lun.
Do u know where the last name Louie pronounced Loo-we comes from? I believe my family is from the same area after watching a lot of your videos and hearing the dialect u speak. I also have a lot of family on my dad’s sad in Canada (he grew up in Michigan).
If you're Toisan, then you come from one of the Four Counties, known as "Sai Yip". My background is Hoiping, which is also one of the Four Counties. Toisan and Hoiping sounds very similar, except for some slight differences in pronunciations and phrases. It's a short bus ride between the two. The other 2 of the original Four Counties are Yinping and Sunwui. Maybe you already know that. You might try contacting the "In Search Of Roots" Program in San Francisco. They did some heavy research before. Thanks for viewing my video on Visit Grandfather's Village In Hoiping.
You mentioned the Setos living in Canada sent money back to the village to construct those large decorated homes, but who lives in those homes now? Were those homes built on the same plots they owned when they left the village? Your video was moving. Thanks so much.
Some of the houses are abandoned. Some of the houses have relatives living in them. Thanks for viewing my video on Visit To My Grandfather's Village In China.
Your grandfather sounds a lot like mine, he would send money back from Newfoundland and help people come to Canada but they never . But my last name is Au. He was from donghuli(?) or east lake in hoiping.. Just learning about my ancestors now. (Ignore what I put on TH-cam.. Was for Privacy reasons) BTW you look a lot like my dad's cousins and my grandfather and his brother.
Great to hear about your grandfather and your search for your roots. Where did your grandfather settle in Newfoundland? Thanks for viewing my video on Visit to My Grandfather's House In Hoiping, China.
Dan Seto St John's Newfoundland. A lot of Au's moved there. My grandfather's brother George Au was the first Chinese to go to university in Newfoundland. My great grandfather opened the first Chinese restaurant named deluxe cafe according to this paper online
Great to hear your mom is a Seto. Is her roots from the "Chiak Hom" area (Chikan In Mandarin) in Hoiping? Thanks for viewing my video on Visit To Grandfather's Village In Hoiping, China.
We speak what some people would call Country Village Cantonese. There is some similarities but a lot of differences as well. Thanks for viewing my video on Visit to My Grandfather's Village.

Do the thieves go into the abandoned homes?
I have heard they do. I have also heard, even when people are living there, they will stick a pole through the window to lift off clothing inside.
Amazing work, Dan! I’m a Szeto myself. I feel proud following your work. Thank you so much!
