The only style that teaches you to fight from the long distance. Very effective in the street cause you can deliver a heavy kick to the opponent staying on the safe distance from where he can't punch or kick you.
yes I practice TKD for 3 years already. trust me when I started practicing TKD I do mostly blocks but it doesn't do any good. Its much better if you dodge an attack than to face it head on, believe me. I almost got KO'd because I blocked a body shot and let my head open. less contact = less damage.
+Peter Yeah these guys are super fit, notice they didn't even seem out of breath at the end of the fight. If WTF olympics fights were like this - it would be much more exciting.
High kicks were thought to be impractical when MMA tournaments first started here. Over time, the high roundhouse has become a staple. Now, even wheel kicks are creeping into the sport. 'Flashy' kicks are specialized tools. When and how to use the tools need mastery. MT and boxing is in the forefront because their tools are much easier to wield. As such, more time is spent learning how to use them. TKD tools are formidable when used correctly. Distilling the best of each art is up to you.
The execution of this kick is so nice i must comment twice :) Perfect counter rhythm & follow through focus! The devastating power of the kick comes from hip twist torsion tension, as muscle torque generated into hips multiplies through an axis spin flex/reflex action that increases then releases stored kinetic energy potential. This accruing force of actuated intent is focused through his leg instantly transferring the full centrifugally multiplied kinetic energy load INTO the target on impact.
I'm an intermediate level Muay Thai fighter, and I'd definitely learn TKD just so I can do those high flying kicks. I can reliably land a wheel kick on my sparring partners (which most of them fight on a professional level), so I'm already about halfway there.
Fast legs! Veyr impressive kicks. I never understood why a fighting style that encourages head kicks with such force would fight with their hands at their waist like that.
I've found that martial arts is like a fighting video game, when both players know combos it a good match, though in a street fight if you know something half the time your opponent will be a "button masher"meaning you can't just do combos, you must pace yourself and watch your opponent for the perfect strike, otherwise the button masher will whoop your ass
that's good to know. But believe me, TKD is also a way of life for us TKD jins, sparring is just one part of it but the brotherhood that bond us jins together is what's more important than beating each other up.
Military personnel were the first non-Japanese black belts. they introduced Japanese martial arts to the US. Japanese instructors came to the US with a developed market for their art.
The speeds these guys poses is downright absurdity! Such amazing footwork for what it is, and blindingly explosive execution of nigh immaculate kicking technique!😄
If you truly believe that then you are not watching the video very closely. TKD guard is alot lower the other martial arts. It is usually with one hand at the side, to block side kicks, and the other across the stomach or chest. The reason its lower is because of the time it takes for a kick to travel to the body is shorter then the time it takes for a kick to travel to the head. Also, some kicks require you to drop guard before or during your attack. :)
It's not about common sense when it comes to fighting, it's about getting the least amount of damage while giving your opponent the maximum amount of damage you could give
Taekwondo does have a set of punching technics, the thing is that punching is more for street fighting than this sort of tournament. In a pefectly flat and wide environment like this, your legs have longer reach and more power than your arms with arguably the same speed, there is then little point on trying to lead your combination with punches, they are rather kept for close quarters or suprising your oponent.
the guy with the white gloves in the finals has his right leg back for most of the fight and doesn't switch, if he does its for a short period. all his spinning kicks are done with his right, not surprised Ri Chol Nam won...
ITF Taewondo is different from WTF Taewondo which is one of Olympic item. In ITF they don't wear protective body gears like in WTF do, so instead they wear gloves and "boots".
Timing of being is everything, & key to the nature of a timing of movement victory is being virtually timeless in nature. In being centered surely in the motionless of the present moment one is unfettered by thought & reason is completely objective to all being embraced by time so by default all objects occupying times space are completely subjective to the movement of your reasons embrace. In this, one's being is director of events in motion rather than one's motions being directed by events.
I also think that kicks are a little predictible unless you´re a master at them, which takes too long and is not useful when throwdowns are allowed. You are totally right, Muay thai and boxing and kickboxing are easier. And I wouldn´t like to see myself trying to close the distance against fast and accurate kickers like the ones in the video. Your comment, Sir, is full of sense
Absolutely right, Chacho - the naeryo chagui (at 45s) should have been a tip off as to his acute sense of distance! Hence the KO at 59s - tae kwon!! :)
i love tornado kicks. no one ever sees them coming. that'd be a bad ass way to knock someone out in a real fight in the streets but good luck trying to pull it off...
@xxapoloxx Finally someone explained it properly! Thank you! depending on a situation of the martial artist various techniques are put used, but a great Taekwondo martial artists or master can succesfully use a combination of kicks and punches. Great example is when different Martial Arts clash in a ring. p.s.(boxing is a sport not martial art... for those who dont know)
@loujencece Yes sir. What i meant is, for ex.) the USAT is the branch that deals with TKD martial sportists associated with olympic sparring matches that lead up to the olympics. I have heard of ITF tournaments, but i haven't heard of a particular branch as to competing in their tournaments. Access wise, no worries. I am an ITF martial artist also.
Ya Tae Kwondo revolves around turning and using the waist and legs to build momentum into one kick. Personally I think TKD rivals Muay Thai in terms of destructive power. If you pit a TDK master against a Karate Master I'll bet the TDK master would win just basted on the longer ranged, destructive power behind the techniques
In Taekwondo sport tournaments there are different rules, wtf don't allow hand strikes to the head and kicking earn the greatest points which is why they tend to attack and defend the the way they do in tournaments which is quite different to Taekwondo Martial Art which has very strong hand, elbow and arm striking.
people say it didn't work in street fight, but itf tkd fighter practice boxing and ground fight too. in a mat, they just didn't use that. beacuse of rule! they dont use hook, uper. and even they cant beat other in a full power. so, if you fight with itf guy, dont think they only use a foot.
sure, blocking would be very useful in a style that specializes on quick strikes and counterattacks.Even if they blocked their opponent's attack, chances are the other fight would have noticed open spot on the defenders block. Every block has its weak spots. If your'e blocking your head, chances are you could be hit on the body, which cost you points. if you block your body, chances are again you could be hit on your head and it would cost you point, or your life.
Would you want to get hit by these flashy kicks? If not, then shut up and respect the art. The only time a martial art gets respect is when a particular technique(of a specific style) effectiveness is displayed and K.O.s some one in the octagon. This is pathetic, one of the most street effective martial arts(hapki-do,) that I don't even practice is null in the octagon because it's illegal to use it on the ring(no joint manipulation allowed.) Underestimate your opponent in any way, for any reason and find yourself in the jaws of defeat. What is more effective, a kick that can destroy a tree or one that gets to your temple in a blink of an eye? All of the conditioning in the world will not help you there.
Every line I read of your comment had me nodding in agreement. Can imagine using this as self defence the criminal would not even be phazed. All taekwondo is good for is the pretty aerial demonstrations shown in the movies. Learn mui thai and supplement it with krav maga to survive on the streets. Not pretty dancing or sorry I mean taekwondo
todo competidor ITF sabe que las protecciones de pies y mano entorpecen bastante el juego, a la vez que brindan una absorsion insuficiente a los golpes...
That's a whole different situation. They aren't fighting with knifes now, are they? As long as you're punching and kicking it would make common sense to apply some blocking techniques in a fight...
Honestly all martial arts are different, theres no sense bickering about each martial art, i agree taekwondo has become a little bit of a sport but that's not all they teach you, that's just a portion. if youve never taken the martial art then you have no right to bash it because you really have no idea about it, Taekwondo is one of the most popular "Martial Arts" in the world and i think its childish to say its not. And 'Accept' that there are different techniques on how to defend yourself. :)
Maybe that applies only to TKD. I'm practising kyoukushin karate for 2 years and I can guarantee you not dodging in a fight against someone from our discipline will get yourself some serious damage. Just look at the video to the right... But then again, TKD is an Olympic sport while karate is a martial art.
then dont I go on tournaments to win not to compete, anyone can "compete" I knockout my opponent to proove and show that my belt isnt just some piece of clothe that I put around my uniform
but wouldn't it give less power? and rear legs could also be very quick but it depends on the fighter. And how would it give more range? I try kicking with my front leg but the distance traveled seems shorter.
i apologise i feel the same way as u taekwondo is taekwondo at the end of the day regardless if u do ITF or WTF, my comment 3months ago was just a reaction to a comment made by fardanio which claims that 1 form of tkd is deadly than another, at the end of the day you learn all the same stuff in both the only real difference is the sparring which as u can tell i prefere WTF sparing but i must admit i do admire the accuracy, timing, and composure needed to land and score in ITF sparring.
well honestly i think the philosophy in any martial arts is if you can dodge, why block it (unless you have a crazy counter set up but even so) Im doing WTF right now and i gotta admit ITF matches look so intense!! if only there was a ITF club nearby...could do both >_< When the ITF fighters punch though it seems a bit like brawling and reckless, is this always the case?
I'm tired of all comments about, what is the best martial art, becouse that isnt about the martial art, depends of the artist. for example the vid about Muay Thai vs Tkd, where the tkd fighter lost. From my point of view if the fighter were Ri Chol Nam, The thing were very different, couse he had a more effective martial concept.
would you guard yourself if the situation involved is with a knife? wouldn't it be safer if you would just dodge then attack the attacker when he's out of balance?
This is why i left Tkd years ago... It's not a fight it takes minutes for a good shot, and if you try and go from the first second and beat the opponent very hard you get no respect from nobody, what the heck ??, Yea i know now I'm not a child anymore, and i should stay on my sit and don't be pissed off by this things, but this is the way of martial arts, beat the opponent before he beat you, not playing.....
Meh. I'd disagree. Although there is no contest in practicality when it comes to muay thai or krav maga vs Tae Kwon Do. I'd say it can still be effectively used as self defence. Many kicks are similar to muay thai kicks, and those spin kicks do a LOT of damage. I've taken one and although I'm not saying im any kind of an expert, I have certainly taken both muay thai kicks and TKD kicks and damage range is similar. TKD just happens to be less practical because of the flashyness.
So they can hit your body and score easy points? There is a reason they all keep their hands down. Moving your head away from a kick you can do a lot faster than moving your entire torso away ;-)

the best taekwondo fight EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
first time feeling so hyped watching a tournament. highest of respect to both of them :D
Putang Ina
***** huh? what does that mean lol
That was a bad words from philipinos language I believe
aahhhw heres yeah, i know what it means now and you dont want to know lol
putangina mo bobo tangina walang walang bobo
wow these guys changed my view about tkd.. they move feint and attack like technical outside boxers but with tricky foot jabs and cross
People should not confuse competition TKD for self defense TKD. They are not the same.
John Smith True statement
Man these Korean guys can win world Taekwondo without any problem. Perfection and speed. Wonderful.
thanks for the info, glad someone here explained that in such a professional manner and not in a boastful way
that's good to know. But believe me, TKD is also a way of life for us TKD jins, sparring is just one part of it but the brotherhood that bond us jins together is what's more important than beating each other up.

the sparring in this is better compared to other videos however i hardly seen them put there guard up
I found the naeryo chagi at 0:43 more impressive than the tornado. That was one fast and accurate kick, damn!
Nice tornado kick, he even lifted the left foot to eliminate all the kinetic friction possible.
That tornado kick tho!!
+NitroAmi
Right?!
the fists are over used in streetfighting but an occasional mixed counter like grabbing the punching arm and leaving a vunerable area at your enemy.

Jajaja es de hecho asi, pero bueno, con tanta proteccion solo nos falta llevar agua bendita jaja
Aye and it's jsut a coincidence that all the best fighters train thai.
Good job.
These guys are pretty fast, first KO was epic....
@loujencece

1:00 FANTASTIC KICK, A BRUTAL KICK!
Ese 360 directo a la jeta. Hermoso.

I wish Tae Kwon Do had more punches. They have swift kicks, but lack in punches and grappling. Cool video though, gives me good ideas.

There are some ITF TKD videos around that show hand strikes. You might find those more interesting.
I like that they actually use punches..
todo competidor ITF sabe que las protecciones de pies y mano entorpecen bastante el juego, a la vez que brindan una absorsion insuficiente a los golpes...
Hwang Su Il actually Motion Captured for Hwoarang
1:01 Oh I did not know you could wear glasses......wait....oh shittttt!
I remember when we used to use that gear!
00:59 was clean
i was just thinking the same thing, that they look like boxers but with their feet heh, nice to see some TKD in action that isn't bullshit.
Very nice
What kind of tournament is this? Or what organization?
I would like to participate.
That's a whole different situation. They aren't fighting with knifes now, are they? As long as you're punching and kicking it would make common sense to apply some blocking techniques in a fight...
Your last comment is spot on.
So is ITF. It all depends on the practicioner in question. Forgive my spelling :-)
I see, thanks for the information.
but they are so good without guarding, imagine them guarding lol
what a kick!
Marko: you've never been in a real situation have you??
Youre an idiot you btch. You cant even kick 45 kick damn.
what was that at 0.52? he faked a lowkick and did a 540 highkick with almost no space and from that stance... crazy agility and swiftness
yeah that was awesome!
I'm assuming for the same reason boxers wear gloves, but I've never really had that question answered either.
I know, right!? That came out of nowhere. Did not see that coming from a tkd practitioner.
@DREAUXENTERTAINMENT i can agree with this, very good point you make
very fast 360 spin body kick,
Maybe that applies only to TKD. I'm practising kyoukushin karate for 2 years and I can guarantee you not dodging in a fight against someone from our discipline will get yourself some serious damage. Yes and blocking is essential for that purpose.
at 3:09, I thought that ref was gonna kick some ass...
Ninjas have been dispatched.

Well said! I Like it!
Those dudes are dangerous....
well honestly i think the philosophy in any martial arts is if you can dodge, why block it (unless you have a crazy counter set up but even so)
Im doing WTF right now and i gotta admit ITF matches look so intense!! if only there was a ITF club nearby...could do both >_<
When the ITF fighters punch though it seems a bit like brawling and reckless, is this always the case?
The title of this vid promised a fantastic kick. Where was it?
3:40 their women sound exactly like a group of 2nd grade boys and girls.
+Vesta Gaming Co. ikr, fuking annoying
That's probably because they are 2nd graders
wow what is that called, 360 spinning back kick? I really want to learn that in higher levels of my TKD training.
I'm tired of all comments about, what is the best martial art, becouse that isnt about the martial art, depends of the artist.
for example the vid about Muay Thai vs Tkd, where the tkd fighter lost.
From my point of view if the fighter were Ri Chol Nam, The thing were very different, couse he had a more effective martial concept.
some schools will teach a bit of grappling, but obviously not as much as the Japanese schools.
I love this fight
TKD-Ri Chol Nam (winner in every game in this video) from North Korea is very good and hard to defeat him! Good Job Kim Jong Un... From me:Stalin USSR
would you guard yourself if the situation involved is with a knife? wouldn't it be safer if you would just dodge then attack the attacker when he's out of balance?

Amazing!! I wonder what dans are these guys?
Probably 4th. ITF black belts get the stripes after 4th Dan. I don’t think they are allowed to compete above that.
I too am taekwondo someone suggests to me some video in where i say some combos of kicks that I can do? Or some amagues? Please =D
id keep my hands up in a kicking competition.
So they can hit your body and score easy points? There is a reason they all keep their hands down. Moving your head away from a kick you can do a lot faster than moving your entire torso away ;-)
Great sport!
