The imperfect tense is the compound past tense in Romance languages. Because there generally is nothing exact about the imperfect tense, the tense is so-called. Why are “ir,” “ser,” and “ver” irregular in the imperfect tense? This is my explanation: -“Ir” is irregular in the imperfect tense because the “b” for the second and third conjugation imperfect tense suffixes is dropped for dissimilation of any second or third conjugation verb with a stem ending in a “b.” “Ir” is the only third conjugation verbs that maintains the “b” in the imperfect tense because it never has a normal stem, and it’s not proper to make verbs look just like suffixes when conjugated. -“Ser” is irregular in the imperfect tense because it comes from a combination of the Latin words “esse” and “sedere” (or sedeo). -“Ver” is irregular in the imperfect tense because like “ser,” that word comes from a Latin word with a “d” between vowels (videre), and as part of the pattern of descension from Latin that Spanish follows, the “d” between vowels is dropped, and so is the preceding “e” or “i” when applicable. (“Creer” is an exception if not the exception. Think of that word as related to “credit” or “credible” in English.)
