Bella ciao has always been a protest anthem. It was composed as a protest folk song to protest against the harsh working conditions in the rice fields in the late-19th-century-Italy. Later was used in anti-fascist resistance movements of WW2. Love ki ghanti from Besharam was its copy. Money Heist has just further popularized the already well-known song.
Varun keeps saying that he will put the links to various videos that he mentions during the podcast and never puts them in the description. Am I the only one who is mad about this!!??

I searched about Bella Ciao after watching protestors singing this at Bologna, Italy recently,
'Bella Ciao' is way older than 'Money Heist'.
From Wikipedia: "The song was adopted as an anthem of the anti-fascist resistance: by the Italian partisans between 1943 and 1945 during the Italian Resistance, the resistance of Italian partisans against the Nazi German forces occupying Italy, during the Italian Civil War."
And it is beautiful! :)
In the show too he tells that his father used to sing this during the war
Also it actually came from women workers of the Po valley in Italy who were underpaid, ill-treated, and performed tedious harvesting tasks. In order to protest their conditions, the women would be working in the fields as they sang this song. Varun's excitement about a tv show turning a song into a revolutionary anthem was hilarious though!

Bella ciao is used worldwide as an anti-fascist hymn of freedom and resistance. The song has much older origins though in the hardships of the mondina women, the paddy field workers in the late 19th century who sang it as a protest against harsh working conditions in the paddy fields in North Italy. It wasn't composed by the money heist guys.

Apparently, *Bella Ciao* is not from *Money Heist* originally. It was the song of Italian resistance against Fascism during World War 2. So basically the Hindi version of it was inspired by a similar emotion, like what the JNU students were going through.
