  • This DIY kid’s backpack sewing tutorial will take you step-by-step through the process of making a custom backpack. The main backpack body measures 14” tall x 11” wide x 4” deep; it is smaller than the average backpack, yet still holds standard sized notebooks and folders. It is perfect for kindergarten and other elementary aged children; or anybody that prefers a smaller backpack.

      It is outdoor fabric from JoAnn. The lining is a simple silky polyester (inexpensive). Just use something slightly sturdy for the main fabric and something lightweight on the inside.

    • @PaigeHandmade
      @PaigeHandmade  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will definitely add it to my idea list, but for now I will say that I would construct it similarly to this, just a medium square shape. At a fabric store you can find insulation material to sew in between the outer fabric and a waterproof lining.

    • @PaigeHandmade
      @PaigeHandmade  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can trim the end of the zipper if you need to. Just secure it with a few stitches so it doesn't come apart.

  • @jenniferbarrios1840
    @jenniferbarrios1840 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    For that outer fabric used in the video, did you use outdoor fabric for durability? Would another fabric also ok to use? If so, what would you recommend to use?

    • @PaigeHandmade
      @PaigeHandmade  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Outdoor fabric for durability and texture. I would use fabric that is medium/heavy or apply an interfacing if it is lighter. Any canvas type material would be my recommendation.

    • @jenniferbarrios1840
      @jenniferbarrios1840 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @PaigeHandmade
      @PaigeHandmade  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jenniferbarrios1840 You totally can do it! I'm so excited to see it. My biggest tip is to take it slowly and use pins. Never underestimate the helpfulness of pins.

    • @jenniferbarrios1840

    • @PaigeHandmade
      @PaigeHandmade  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jenniferbarrios1840 You will sew the pocket directly onto the backpack front. Position the pocket with binding folded under, pin it onto the main front piece, and stitch it down to the main front. Does this make sense?

  • @katw9271
    @katw9271 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This may be a silly question, but if I decided to use quilters cotton fabric , & quilted the whole thing, could I get away with not using that lining fabric or changing the fabric measurements? So basically the end product would be a quilted backpack. Or would I need to try a completely different method?

    • @PaigeHandmade
      @PaigeHandmade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely change anything you want to! I used the lining so it would be more durable and slippery on the inside. I think your idea would be very cool. It just might wear a little faster because it is made of cotton (and there's nothing wrong with that). I'd say go for it and have fun!

    This is a wonderful pattern, enjoying making this as an Xmas present. Question regarding zipper installation, are you actually sewing across the zipper teeth? It's hard to tell from the video. And if you ever publish written instruction, I'd relish them! This Gramma has a hard time manipulating the video.

    • @PaigeHandmade
      @PaigeHandmade  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I sew across zipper teeth I focus on the zipper tape and *slowly and turning the wheel by hand* maneuver between the zipper teeth, and then back into the tape. Does that make sense? Do whatever you are comfortable with that works for you. Glad you are enjoying it!

    This was a great project, but I wish there had been more guidance. For example, when showing how to put on the fist zipper stop, it would have been nice had you said something like, “We’ll take care of the other zipper stop a little later.” I thought I had missed something. So fashioned my own second zipper stop only to have to rip it all out. I think with the fabric I chose, I should have put in some fusible lining for better support. You might have suggested that. It also might have helped to actually watch how you sewed up some of the more difficult parts. Better close-up shots of what something should look like once sewn. Lastly, choose a lining fabric that has an obvious right and wrong side. That was very frustrating. My nieces backpack turned out pretty good. Can’t wait to make her another one with corrections.

      I can't give exact measurements but for every inch you shorten the height of the backpack you will need to shorten the zipper panels by two inches. For every inch you decrease the width of the backpack you will decrease the length of the bottom panel by one inch. I hope this is helpful.

      Paige Handmade one more question if you don’t mind? How much do I take off for the pocket in the front? Is it the same as the zipper? Two inches? The pocket side
      Please and thank you?!?

      Your comment was in my spam folder for some reason and I am only seeing it now. I hope you were able to figure out the pocket sizing. I would have recommended making it slightly smaller; maybe an inch from the height and width.

    How would one adjust the measurements in order make this bag for an adult and 2nd /3rd grader?

    • @PaigeHandmade
      @PaigeHandmade  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let's see... If you want to make it wider then add 1-2 inches of width to the body and side bottom. You may want to make the pocket a little wider too. Then if you want to make it taller, then you can add 1-3 inches to the body and straps. You'll have to double the additional inches for the side top pieces. Example, if you add 2" height to the body, then add 4" to the side top length. Again, you may want to increase the pocket height. // Also, you can refer to the size of your favorite backpack; just add an inch for seam allowances (0.5" all around). I hope this helps!

    • @PaigeHandmade

      Yes, that would be fun to do. Take detailed notes as you disassemble it and some photos to go along if there are specific techniques you want to replicate.

      I don't have measurements for side pockets on hand. You can look at pocket styles you like and practice making them with the measurements on the worksheet. With sewing you learn a lot through practicing and experimenting.

      I imagine you can use it. Don't use too much; you don't want it to be too thick. I would also quilt a 2" square/diamond pattern to keep it from shifting around. Remove any that gets in the seam allowance area to reduce bulk.
