Darkstalkers. Remember in the 2010's when Capcom kept hinting at another entry, and all we got was a poorly marketed bundle? It's pretty awful that Darkstalkers had so much potential - just a totally incredible fighting series - and got dumpstered because ThErE iSnT aNy FaN iNtErEsT
This one's mildly personal, because I was really hoping for a proper revival in the mid 2010's. Now we're stuck with an autopsy.

Seriously, with the exceptions of Puzzle Fighter 2 and Pocket Fighter they used the same bloody sprites from 1994 in every game she appeared in all the way up until fraking Tatsunoko vs. Capcom on the Wii when they finally gave her a 3D model.

Also don't forget that Udon Entertainment, the people who did the HD Street Fighter 2 came to Capcom and asked to remake Darkstalkers with beautiful HD artwork which Capcom refused and then released Darkstalkers Resurrection.
My pet theory is that capcom didn't want to shell out the money for art assets given the insane standard of the original trilogy. Even now its crazy how many moves there are that have unique hit animations for EVERY character.
At this point it feels like Capcom is almost ashamed of Darkstalkers...outside of making cameos and being guest characters they won't touch the series with a ten foot pole

because capcom doesn't need or want to sadly. street fighter will always sell off of popularity alone as long as the game looks good, because capcom will hook that sucker up to an iv unit and dripfeed it updates until people start liking it.
mvci was a flop, darkstalkers died a while ago.
capcom is basically standing on ice carefully trying to walk forward and not capsize. re7 and the remakes were well received, dmc5 was well received, and the daigyakuten saiban series is finally being localized for western audiences. but i think capcom is a lot more hesitant to invest in more fighting games because sfv was trashed on hard during release and for its first year, and mvci died in like 3 months. i feel like they don't really feel comfortable taking risks because every time they did in recent memory it bit them in the ass.

I'm keeping hope alive for them. If we can't have a new Darkstalkers game, we should at least have the characters as Street Fighter DLCs.
Well, Street Fighter V has Akira Kazama from Rival Schools, so who knows, maybe Street Fighter 6 might add one.

Im already satiated with Resident evil , Monster hunter and Street fighter . Another Shoryuken , Rathalos or jill sandwich and im puking out my joy for capcom titles.
How about a new Dino Crisis , Redearth , cyberbots/armored warriors, Star Gladiator , Rival schools , Megaman legends , Power (fucking) stone , Maximo , Darkstalkers ( fitting for the video) , Godhand , Viewtiful Joe , Dragons Dogma or Breath of fire ?
Dammit , im always enraged by capcoms dense retardation for missing huge opportunities and forgetting that they have a huge library of awesome IPs to be made .

Two interesting tidbits I will ALWAYS love about Darkstalkers:
- The animation quality is so crisp and well done it's used as a teaching tool in many animation schools. Look up "Darkstalkers and the 12 principles of animation"
- Amingo and Ruby Rose were designed for a Darkstalkers 4 game. They were so loved they got included into MvC2 when the DS game was cancelled just because of how much the team loved them.

The more strange thing is than they always bring back some of the darkstalkers characters specially Morrigan and Lilith but Capcom never made more things about darkstalkers itself

But yeah usually it's because of the Fanservice of Morrigan or Felicia (and Dimitri too sometimes since he is the protagonist)
But it's strange that sometimes too with games like Teppen (Capcom card game) and project X Zone They bring almost everyone of darkstalkers to make part of the game and they still don't make a darkstalkers 4
Even street fighter have costumes dlc for darkstalkers, of almost everyone, for the girl and the man's too

I never played Darkstalkers myself but Darkstalkers Is one of those series that really needs a comeback.

PLAY IT. I grew up with the series, I'm getting back into it now and it's absolutely great. Capcom will never be this lit again and that saddens me to no end.

It's disgusting how dirty they did Darkstalkers... ;( That game is ten times more fun than Street Fighter!!~ X3 (I respect SF, though) All I want is a new game from the franchise with all the characters, color palletes, etc. Kinda like a 3D collection combining all 3 of the first games. :3 Just release that shit around Halloween then BOOM, Profit. ;) Oh yeah, & 2 storymodes: "Original" & an "Afterwards" that shows what the characters gone through since after their original endings. :3 ...& some new costumes would be nice. :3
I doubt that it will make more profit than SF. Also worth mentioning that fighting game in general are becoming more niche and saturated. Capcom at this point probally doesn't want to take any risk with the genre anymore
This game became irrelevant when Children of the Atom came out.
If they come back the game should embrace it's Darkness and be rated M. I don't want it to be MK, just go all in on the demon atmosphere and sexy time

This was so good. Your research into the nitty-gritty mechanics of the game was exactly what I wanted more of from Sphere Hunter's video on Darkstalkers. Not to focus too much on comparisons but the two of you are my favorites out there in the scene right now.

To say the least: they used it's engine as the base for X-Men CotA, which would later go on to evolve into the Marvel vs. Capcom games.
Granted, Vampire Hunter 2 is a weird update that's basically supposed to be Vampire Hunter but with Vampire Saviors Mechanics.
I just really like Morrigan, Felicia and Lei Lei. That's why I was remembered it as a kid. The waifus.

Capcom could use the fame of other franchises of theirs to boost hype for a new Darkstalkers, if they find it's not enough by itself. Add suitable characters to the roster, like Firebrand, Arthur, Dante, Trish, Lucia, and bring Abyss, Ruby Heart, Amingo and Son Son back from MVC2. First thing they can't do is leave out any of the old characters, even if they use Dee instead of Donovan, for example, Donovan should become unblockable once you finish the game with Dee (for free or after successfully completing some "missions"), which would connect to Donovan's ending in Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge. That way we could also have an adult or teenage Anita as a playable character with her telekinesis possibly unlocked by a new traumatic event or revelation. I'd even add a "ghost" or demonic version of Gen from Street Fighter and an Oni version of Akuma because of Udon's Akuma Vs. Hell. Bring back Darkstalkers 3's mechanics and what fighting game player would want to miss out on that? I waited years to get SFV at a cheaper price, but I'd pay full price on day one for a new Darkstalkers game like that.

Nightwarriors: Darkstalker's Revenge was the first game I have ever played, and since that formative age the series has held a sacred place in my heart.

Seeing this as someone who never got to get into the games themselves and was/is just ENAMORED with the series’ art style, it’s a fucking shame to learn how downhill everything went for the fans and any passionate members of the dev team

Good video and great insight on its initial downfall. I still stand by the notion that Darkstalkers 4 is needed, now more than ever, and many other fallen franchises like Rival Schools and Gem Fighter should be brought back. Also, some decent ports of the old stuff so newer fans will know why putting Akira Kazama in Street Fighter V is such a big deal.
What I wouldn't kill for Darkstalkers in the RE engine... and this is coming from someone who's experience with the series is Project X Zone, can't imagine what the fans would do

I think the Anakaris jokes should come with an asterisk noting that one of the best DS players in the world is an Anakaris player. The game really is that balanced

Darkstalkers is great and I actually think if they made a new game it would do really well. Who doesn't like monster gurls and boyz? Skull Girls did really well so I think if a new game was done in the right way it would be successful.
Skullgirls was definitely the spiritual successor to DarkStalkers and the inspiration was obvious. Also the longer we go without a new game, the more people want one. If we got a trailer for DarkStalkers 4 tomorrow, it would break the internet, at least the parts where fighting game fans congregate.
Took a break from classic KOF playthroughs this summer. Started Darkstalkers to get back to Capcom stuff.

Ah yes, Capcom's tendency of judging frachise interest by selling dumb, unwanted, cash grab games and checking if it sells.
Thank god Devil May Cry turned alright, they rebooted the franchise after 4 didn't sell as they were hoping (the game sold well, they wanted more) then based franchise interest on the HD collection and re-release of 4 to see if a fifth game would sell.

I love Vampire, but I'm happy with it and Rival Schools remaining dead lest Capcom pull a SF5 or MvCI with them. Imagine playing Vampire 4 with only eight characters available at the start, terrible unbalanced gameplay, no arcade mode, no gallery mode, and a weekly rotation of challenges to get coin to unlock colors. There would be three seasons over the next three years to add six characters each for $40 along with $400 in DLC costumes. And if it didn't make infinite money, they would just cancel the planned content leaving the game forever incomplete. I don't want that for franchises I love.

Also, by 2010 Guilty Gear was pretty well-established, and going by the description here Darkstalkers sounds like a direct predecessor to Guilty Gear.
Wildly different character mechanics across a colorful and unique roster, chain combos, the way air-blocking vs ground functions, etc.

Guilty Gear X DarkStalkers would be the illest game ever made. If there were two games that were ever meant to collaborate, it's those two specifically. I think the reason I main Faust is because he has DarkStalkers energy, like, he wouldn't be out of place in that game at all

I hope they make one. I never played Darkstalkers, but I played MVC1 years ago at an arcade machine and really loved Morrigan for her design(I was like 10, she awakened something in me). But as I looked more into the game lately, the whole cast and game itself looks cool. I like how "dark" it is.
I grew up with DarkStalkers 3 and I think Morrigan did that with a lot of us
I always like to think Dark Stalkers inspired Killer Instinct and KI had to add a bit more humans to make it different
For some reason my wifi just crapped out for like 30 seconds when he mentioned it "going up" when he moved on to resurrection. I usually watch/listen to these while doing some repetitive tasks (like spreadsheets) so I just thought he reaaaaallllllyyyy wanted to build tension.

I have the three main games and still love this franchise. The games, anime, art books, comics, and some action figures are proudly part of my collection. Morrigan, Felicia, and later Lilith are my favs. My first cosplay was Lei-Lei/Hsien-ko. Morrigan introduced me to the succubus which became my favorite monster. I... I really love Darkstalkers; not the horrible North American cartoon though.
I loved Suzi the Sphere Hunter's idea for for a character action game starring Morrigan. Just reskin DMC4 and have all the bosses be Darkstalkers Morrigan would take weapons from. It would be so awesome.
