    Do you get local channels with either sling or DTV Now?

      Great question. Yes you can, it's just hard to review that bit right now, since the offerings are in constant flux. But to check out what dtvnow offers, go here: www.directv.com/DTVAPP/packProg/attLocalChannels.jsp?assetId=att_cms_local_channels
      And for Sling, check here: help.sling.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/How-do-local-channels-work-on-Sling-TV

I feel DIRECTV NOW will eventually be on top cause they are partnered with another great company(ATT) Soon the tech will thrive. DIRECTV NOW interface still make u feel u have cable not an APP.

      Raquel AN he means he's paying $18 total, for the entire service. If you're an AT&T customer, you get DirectTV Now for $10 a month, HBO for free, and he pays the extra $8 for Starz.

    I have DIRECTV Now after switching from Playstation Vue (they dropped all channels from Viacom). I pay $55 a month for the "Just Right" package (80+ channels) and HBO. I have the local ABC affiliate and they just added the local CBS station in my area (Baltimore). I love it! Once they add the DVR it will be even better.

    I’ve had DirecTV Now since day 2 of its launch and I absolutely love it. Yes initially there were tons of problems and message errors, which IMO was to be expected as there was a ton of people signing up for the service and a new service nonetheless. I got in on the promo they were running at the time for the ‘Go Big,’ package which was only $35 a month, which is the current price of their base package. I’ve got a ton of channels. Many of what I don’t watch, however, at $35 a month ($38.33 with tax to be exact), I’m not complaining. I’m glad I stuck it out with DirecTV Now especially since I was paying Charter Spectrum almost $170 per month when I had regular cable, internet, and home phone service.
    There’s a few things that I would change with DirecTV Now if I could but at this point, I’m content with what I have and what I’m paying for.

    Good review. Sling Blue for $25 a months gives me everything I want (including SYFY). Add-on the kids package for for $5 or the 4-play package (kids, news, etc) for $10 and your bill is between 25-35. Done and done, that is 95% of what I watch and love it. Sling can get very expensive if you add on lots of packages, but then you are defeating the WHOLE purpose of "cord-cutting", so people who complain about it are missing the whole point.

    Thanks for posting. I just canceled Directv satellite 1/1/19 and went with Directv Now. In Washington DC and when I travel to the Raleigh, NC area I am able to get all major network local channels. Sling offers only FOX and NBC in Washington, DC and only FOX Sports in NC. And....because I am an ATT wireless customer, I get additional discounts and features...so, my winner is Directv Now. Also, Directv Now offers 20 hours of free cloud recording. The best part of this whole scenario for me is that I don't have to pay for and scroll thru 60 informercial channels and I have the ability to take Directv Now with me wherever I go.

    Sling TV runs smoother and is cheaper, but has less channels. DirecTV now has a better channel line up, but is very slow and buffers all the time. The new update should fix all that, with a better layout also.

    I have used Sling TV for a few months and found that it stops, freezes and buffers quite often. I replaced my router to help the situation but it really didn't help too much. I was at Cricket yesterday and saw the special on Direct TV Now and signed up. I have not had any stops or freezes at all. I do get a couple of the locals and that sure will be nice. So far I am leaning towards cutting Sling and staying with Direct TV Now. There will be a learning curve as I am quite used to Sling but I think it will be worth it. Oh, Sling just dropped my favorite channel and that was part of my decision to change.

And I prefer paying for smaller packages of channels for 5 or 10 bucks more than having to get a whole bundle of channels for more money, that I'm not even going to watch just to get 1 or 2 Channels that im actually interested in.

    I have had Vue and TH-cam TV and a neighbor had Sling. Vue was great (with locals in my area) at $30, but they raised me to $40 by eliminating Slim. Had a month trial of TH-cam TV but they didn't have TNT or locals. My neighbor had no problems with Sling.
    What I discovered is that I only need the streaming in the Spring and Summer. I do OTA with a attic antenna in the Fall. So I will try Sling in the Spring for probably 4 to 6 months at $25 and then go back to OTA.

  • @kenyattaclay7666
    @kenyattaclay7666 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Sling TV might sound like the cheaper option but by the time you finish all the add on's it really comes out to be the most expensive of all the OTT services, especially if your a sports fan. If you want all the ESPN channels and all the Fox sports channels you have to start with the $40 package and then add $10 for the sports package and if you add the DVR you are already at $55. The problem is I also like watching news and old movies so if I want to have those channels that's another $10. However with PS Vue you get an unlimited DVR I get all the sports channels including MLB network which Sling doesn't carry, all the news networks and movie networks like Sundance and TCM at their $54 package. I really did like Sling TV but for everything that I wanted my bill wasn't going to be any cheaper than cable, in fact it was going to be more.

    • @raipier
      @raipier 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The point of cord cutting is to not have bloat. If you want all the packages, you are being self-defeating in your initial
      reason for cord cutting.

    • @kenyattaclay7666
      @kenyattaclay7666 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      raipier sorry but I disagree. The point of coward cutting is to get the channels you want and not pay for the ones you don't want otherwise they wouldn't offer those channels. Also, a significant portion of coard cutters do do because they are tired of paying for equipment they don't own. I cut the coard because by the time you add the fees for each box and the HD access that's an extra $50 on the bill. Lastly, with the exception of Viacom channels, I can get everything pulse more for about $45 less than Sling.

    Directv Now does local channels without additional costs vs SlingTV which requires you to have the higher costs package. I have had both and Directv Now is the better option costs and channel options and Directv Now has a watchlist which allows you to watch shows after they have aired. Directv Now lag time is much better vs SlingTV which would freeze constantly on wifi and the app would crash.

    We have a rental where I work and there are 9 units where we have either sling or DirecTV. The customers greatly prefer DirecTV because here we cannot get local news. Plus the national news offers very little on sling. Also, for local sports which is through a local or Statewide Channel it was not available on sling. When you need customer service on DirecTV there is no one to call which is a great problem. After trying the bow that work at home I have DirecTV because of the selections. For $15 a month more I can watch local basketball and baseball which was not offered through sling. As I stated, many of the residents did not like sling TV because it did not offer station that they wanted to see and these residents are coming from all over America.

    Great overview, just two quick questions:
    -: Does either service or a competitor allow you to rewind LIVE tv in case l miss something or want to start over?
    - Does any provider allow you to record entire shows, games, etc. that go over the regularly scheduled time without having to record the next show,movie after?
    Thank you!

    • @ReviewsOrg
      @ReviewsOrg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most streaming TV providers will allow for DVR service, including live rewind. There are some exceptions, though, so you should read the fine print before signing up for one. The biggest exception, off the top of my head, is that Sling TV will not allow you to record or rewind any Disney-owned channels, including ESPN.

    I like Sling TV but the last time I had it(a couple weeks ago), I had issues casting DVR’d shows from my iPhone to my Chromecast. Kept trying to watch my recordings of The Magicians and other shows and it kept giving me an error message. Played it on demand instead & suddenly that problem goes away. Have you heard of anyone encountering this issue? It’s a deal breaker for me, sadly.
    Completely unrelated but holy crap, you’re the guy from the legendarium podcast! I watched a newer video which showed up in my feed and thought “huh, that guy sounds familiar” and then open up this one where you’re wearing a shirt from the podcast! Jeez, you guys must be busy people.

    I can tell you during the beta test of DirecTV now DVR, you currently only have 20 hours that you can record on and sometimes it's extremely glitchy you'll have audio that is offset from the video or it will just skip and that could either be the broadcast or the DVR itself I'm not sure. But it does allow you to record just about everything that I have tried to record so far including full series old broadcasts new series only and the like. It's pretty good

    Like so many of you we found cable TV prices to be prohibitive as we are retirees & on a fixed income. We decided to get rid of cable & bought a "Smart TV" and are SO frustrated with trying to figure out how to use it. We care nothing about watching sports or movies - I just want local TV stations, The Weather Channel, HGTV and a few more. We live in the mountains - 60 miles or more from a major city - so I'm guessing an outside antenna probably won't work? We bought an Amazon Fire Stick & have subscribed to Sling, but I am greatly disatisfied with being able to get anything that I'm interested in on TV. Any suggestions about where to find tutorials, etc., would be greatly appreciated.

    I have a question I cannot find. On Hulu, if I missed a show, I simply SEARCH for that show and I can see it whenever I want. Is sling tv like that also, or since it's called "live tv" do I have to know WHEN it's airing and watch it at that time?

  • @Tutor14

    There are a number of items missing and needed for any comparison.
    1. Why is PS Vue left out? Why assume the choice comes down to these two? For that matter, Hulu Live should get a look as well. PS Vue offers more simultaneous streams standard than either Sling or DTVN. Hulu Live offers includes the Hulu streaming service as well, which could potentially reduce DVR need, not to mention some strong original programming.
    2. Any comparison needs to include number of streams. 2 streams won’t cut it for families.
    3. Use as a sign in for apps would be a big one for me. The only thing my family tends to watch live is news and sports. Everything else is on demand. Using my provide sign in to log into TBS or AMC or SYFY etc is a very important element.
    Presently we stream nearly everything. A Sling or DTVN or PSVue or Hulu Live or even Fubo or TH-cams Service would be meant to fill the remaining live tv need (news & sports) plus provide app sign in. The premiums all offer their own subs or can be added to Amazon PrimeTv unless live tv provider offers a better deal or better experience. If easier, you might note majors not available.
    4. Video quality / compression. Who offers the best resolution, compresses less? Related, what type of internet speed is required for each?
    5. Audio quality - format. Which service offers the best sound, 5.1 sound, Dolby surround etc?
    6. Major channels missing? Ex. Sling doesn’t offer Discovery, Fox News, Fox Business, Fox Movie Channel, BeIn Sports. PS Vue missing Viacom channels, Tennis Channel etc. DTVN?
    I’ve had difficulty finding a truly comprehensive faceoff and so have been trying to compile my own.

    Here is a tip just in case you are just not ready yet to cut the cable line. Call your cable company and talk to the department that handles DISCONNECTIONS. Dont try it with customer service because they will not have the flexibility like their Disconnection department to offer deals. This department is the last line of defense for the cable company to keep you as a customer and will try their best to keep you on. You probably will get a significant cut on your bill and probably get offered better services. The reason for this is because no matter what that cable will always be at your home. They would rather get something for it then nothing. My personal experience is that I got a deal set for 3 years. Lowered my bill by 33% and i now have better services.

    Yes you did miss something fairly important. DirectTV Now often has no need for DVR because you can use it as a provider to sign in to many channel apps thereby accessing on demand content. You can only do that with Sling on a couple of apps.

    We cut off UVerse for DTVNow, but we’re switching back. We have the highest package DTVNow offers, yet they still don’t have ABC (we have to use an antenna which means ugly equipment and no recording ability). CBS and NBC are glitchy at times.
    Not enough DVR space and it takes too long to search the guide and switch channels.
    Just too many little issues to keep dealing with and we’re not even saving money!

    At one point I had Hulu, TH-cam TV AND Sling, but the deal breaker for me ultimately was LOCAL live tv. I saw that DirectTv NOW offered it as well but it was the price that made the difference.
    I liked TH-cam TV but they just don't offer enough channels. Sling seemed to show the same commercials over and over again! Smh. The cloud DVR was ok but you couldn't fast forward thru commercials. With Hulu I just went commercial free AND still had my local channels for a reasonably low price. Sling needs to get LOCAL channels to win me back and clear up that Disney mess they've got going on. DirectTv NOW is definitely not a bad option tho. The great thing is.......no contracts. So I can switch whenever. Basically, to each...his own.

    I used sling TV on my phone and talk about glitchy. I got it to watch walking dead and it never failed you would be in the middle of watching a very intense scene and it would freeze then you step out and try to go back in and it didn't remember where you left off, meanwhile your struggling to get back to show and it repeats. I've never used it with a streaming box but on my phone it was frustrating.

      As for multiple TVs, you will need some method on each TV of streaming Sling TV. It might be a smart TV, or a dedicated streaming box like a Roku or Apple TV, or other Sling-capable device. To see a list of devices that can be used to watch Sling TV, go here: www.sling.com/devices

      I can answer that... You may get a few local sports channels. I get fox sun sports but for the vast majority of locals, you will need to get an antenna. Sling orange ($20) is 1 stream. Sling blue ($25) is I think 3 or 4 streams. As long as your tv is a smart tv or has a roku device or something along the lines of roku such as firestick you can stream.

    After a year with sling I’m happy to have moved to DirecTV. In order to get ESPN and more than 1 stream you need the most expensive sling plan. HBO is $10/month less with DirecTV, and getting discovery was big for me.
    The biggest thing? Sling’s commercial volume is obnoxious. DirecTV’s commercials don’t increase in volume.

    • @ReviewsOrg
      @ReviewsOrg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good call on the commercial volume. We may want to factor that in for future reviews. Thanks!

    • @fordmi79
      @fordmi79 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reviews.org That was what first got my attention. I was otherwise happy with sling and somebody asked me “How can you deal with those loud commercials?!”
      You can find online discussion and reports going back over 2 years where sling has acknowledge the problem and “are working on it.” Clearly it is not a high priority for them.
      It’s an interesting loophole. It is federally illegal for cable companies to allow commercials to do that. The law does not apply to the internet, and sling allows their advertisers to take advantage (may be more accurate to say sling doesn’t STOP them from doing so).

    Very good review, well done. I have both right now. DirectvNow because I got the 100 channels for $35 deal. Hoping the new app & dvr will be nice when DirectvNow rolls it out in the fall, then I can roll with just one.

      I think it's $35 for a limited set of channels. I looked yesterday and for $50, you get that $35 tier plus Science channel, Weather channel, and a handful of others (which is what I wanted as I love Science channel).
      But the DVR in DirecTV is not that good. It's channel dependent. Fox does not allow it to be used for their shows at all. It's not an option for anything on that network (or FX/FXX)

    Directv Now is also better for AT&T customers due to Data Free Stream. All mobile phone companies limit your high speed data bucket to around 22GB. When AT&T customers stream Directv Now, they don't use their bucket. They can truly stream unlimited and save their bucket for other use. Add the monthly savings from the unlimited plans and it's a better value overall.

Used to pay 120 for crappy cable now only 30 bucks (I have the 25 dollar package with the 5 dollar kids add on).my only complain about sling is that it's not very user friendly with ALL Android devices ,works great on a firestick/box (I have a Firebox in my 3 rooms)but not so good on my T95Z Android box !breaks up a lot so I had to completely lower the res on the box to work better with sling dispite the fact that this box has high res capability.ither than that I recommend sling to everyone ,I'm telling u u won't even miss a cable box.

    DirecTv now is the better. I had both and decided on DirecTv now. Has more Channels has the discovery line up has a dove now and I got in when it was $35 a month for the next to bet package with HBO. They just upped it to 40$ and now allow a third stream for $5 a month. I think it’s the best option out there purely for the channel lineup.
    I’m sure the others are fine. I liked sling but the channels were not what I wanted. Plus they have an apple for Apple TV and roku. Sometimes if you pay 3 months in advance you get a free Apple TV. You can’t beat that, basically getting the service for free

    Don't know about DirecTV Now but SlingTV has extremely loud commercials. I gave up their service and went back to cable because of the uncomfortably loud commercials. I did a little research and found that the issue existed at least as far back as 2015. In my mind, if they haven't fixed the issue in 3 years, it means they don't intend to do anything about it and that SlingTV is more interested in appeasing advertisers than taking care of their customers. I wouldn't take the service if they were giving it away.

    I tried cutting the cord and it’s a total spoof. After adding all the channels I watch it ends up being more like $55-60 which is $20 more then what I pay for cable not to mention I have to buy a roku or Apple TV. I have spectrum and it costs me $40 more a month for TV with hd dvr and all the channels which include red zone, all hbos, all showtime, cinema, Starz. If you compare cord cutting to all the channels I get for $40 I would actually pay double to cut the cord plus whatever device I have to buy.
