I happen to work at the General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio. First let me start by thanking all of you that have purchased a Cruze. I purchased one for my wife and she loves it. I have been able to get up to 45 MPG in our Cruze and it rides great!
Next let me clear up a few things. Yes, this looks very unorganized in the video. The people you see in the video that are working on the car are the hourly employees. All the rest are in management and engineers. . This video was filmed early in the production of the Cruze and they were there to go over any possible production problems during the launch.
The clothing everyone is wearing is their personal clothing. In the departments you see in the video the only protective clothing that is required is watch and belt protectors, gloves and safety glasses for anyone working under the car. The stamping plant requires more protective clothing to protect from cuts from the sharp metal and welding splatter and the paint shop requires everyone to wear lint free coveralls as well and use only approved soap, shampoo, deodorant and so on to protect the paint. All the protective clothing that is needed is worn. I see complaints about people wearing "casual clothes". Really? Should we all wear three piece suits while working in a dirty assembly plant where temperatures can exceed 100 degrees? We aren't out to win any fashion competitions. Our goal is to build a top quality car.
The man the you see "tighten screw, looks at watch" is a torque monitor. His job is to test the torque of every nut and bolt on the vehicle to make sure they are up to specifications. He's not looking at his watch, he's looking at his torque wrench to see that the bolt he just checked is within specifications. Then he's on his way to the next bolt he needs to check. I agree it's not one of the hardest jobs in the plant but it is a very important job if you don't want bolts falling out because they were under torque specifications.
Again, thanks to all of you for your support!

Bill Chimo Bill thank you for all of the information. In the UK, employees would be provided with uniform (polo shirts, trousers and boiler suits) for working on the line.

+Bill Chimo These employees at this company ain't no different than people you see working at Wal-Mart. A factory doesn't serve the general public so they don't have to show an image like working at car dealership. Bill heavy industry used to be 70 %of the economy. Now it's 30%. You guys are rare birds in the United States. There is a natural hate for manufacturing in the United States. Bill What is hated is that americans are still seeing other americans doing a job that they never wanted to do. Nobody ever wanted to work in a nasty, dirty, stinking, hazardous;and Dangerous factory. That's what you are seeing in the some of the responses here bill. Hate.

Let me clear a few things for people that are bashing these workers and the factory... I work for the Chrysler plant in ILL... When u have a "launch " there's always going to be people standing around making sure the cars are getting put together properly... Like making sure the operators are not falling behind from their windows.. Making sure the torque specs are correct.. Etc etc... And we are not required uniforms unless if u work in the paint and body shops... Yes there are some areas that required you to wear bump caps eyeglass and sleeves.. And these workers put their pride in these cars as much as we do in belvidere.. And any other automotive plant in the US

They are not standing around, they are following the camera in an attempt to display quality and craftsman style work. Unfortunately mass production is not designed around craftsman style production nor does have a high level of quality. This plant is very unorganized in the video.

Correct me if I am wrong..... When bolting on a wheel, isn't the correct method to tighten the lug ACROSS the wheel from the last lug tightened (star pattern), NOT the one NEXT to it as the idiot in the video is doing? Using the method shown can result in a warped brake rotor.

I bought a 2008 chevy malibu on April 23 this year, 24 hrs after engine gauge said it was overheating took it in they said it was a faulty gauge, 3 days later engine starts overheating again and car dies have to bring it in again. If you decide to buy a chevy be sure to purchase a full warranty with the engine included and before your warranty expires, get full coverage automotive repair insurance because whoever designed the engine for this car must have been really drunk. Though it seems even foreign cars have alot of problems too.

mpeppermint23 but the amercians cars before 2010 are bad.... I'm looking from 2012 and above. don't expect good American cars below 2010 because they are very disappointing.... a Nissan Altima from 2008 would a way better deal than an American car.

Honda/Toyota have pretty damn high levels of quality with their plants spitting-out cars/trucks as fast as they can make them. It's a Daewoo-Opel product to begin with.......not something consumers really want............GM loses money on most of their small cars assembled or sold in North America>>>>>>>>sole purpose of selling/assembling them is to boost the CAFE ratings

followers!! Don't let the beautiful pictures confuse you . Anyone who
buys a new car from GENERAL Motors the chance you threw your money into
the trash is very large. In this company there is no customer service,
the company's management does not care at all, if you have a problem or a
malfunction, you can only pray to God there is a chance that the help
will come faster. GM is a very dangerous company, be careful and keep
your money safe.!!!Share so more people don't get screwed.GM is a big bluff

I still own and ride my 2012 LT 2.0 VCDI Indian version. And that vehicle runs like a charm. Many modern car owners envy this vehicle because it was made that way, to last long. I will be extending my Green Tax and Fitness once it is due because I ain't letting this vehicle to be put to sleep even if Chevy has left Indian markets and there's scarcity of spares. I will make sure to comb out the nearest scrapyard if in case needed but not letting it go. That's how Cruze enthusiasm looks like. Wishes.

Unfortunately you're not qualified or educated in this assembly process of a new model launch. It takes a period of time to perfect the process of thousands of parts coming together with thousands of employees to completely build a vehicle from scratch and have everything assembled perfectly.
You're a negative individual that doesn't understand what you were looking at. Unfortunately for you it is a sad commentary. Visit the plant and see for yourself what a finely tuned assembly process it is building a very high quality project.

      You're way off base.....
That man was checking the torque on the vital bolts set forth by the NHTSB.
He's not looking at his watch.
Everyone wears what they want too according to GM rules.
It saves the Company Millions of Dollars not having to provide every employee with a uniform.
You're obviously in Error of your post. I would strongly suggest you speak with facts and not your incorrect opinion.
