- Hybrid Napier grass may be a boon for dairy industry on account of supply of adequate green fodder of high nutritional value with round the year availability and minimum expense on repeated fodder cultivation. Fodder is cheap source of nutrient supply than concentrate feed. It needs to given more emphasis so as to make the dairy industry economically viable option. In India limited land (8.6 m ha) is available for fodder cultivation and our country may face the shortage of both green as well as dry fodder by about 61.1 and 21.95, respectively. Napier grass is also called as Elephant Grass due to its tallness and vigorous vegetative growth. Hybrid Napier grass is a tropical perennial grass, more succulent, grow faster, leafy, fine-textured, palatable, fast growing and drought resistant.
Hybrid Napier can grow on a variety of soils. It does not thrive well on water logged and flood prone lands.
Farmyard manure @ 25 10 MT/ha before ploughing. 50: 50: 40 of kg NPK/ha- Basal. Application of Azospirillum and Phosphobacterium along with 75% of RDF of N & P fertilizers increased yield & saving of 25% of fertilizer dose. After each harvest apply 75-100 kg N/ha . 50 cm X 50 cm, propagation is by means of rooted slips or stem cutting- 40,000 are required to plant one ha planting.
A high amount of oxalic acid in forage impairs calcium assimilation. Affected animals fall down, pulse rate increases. The tender leaves of Hybrid Napier contains 3 to 6 % oxalate that is poisonous to the animals. To avoid this poisonous effect, it should be harvested at 40-45 days and this fodder should b fed ag with the legume fodder to the animals. Oxalate exhibit symptoms of Ca deficiency in animals. Nitrate application resulted in higher contents of soluble and total oxalate than ammonium application. With increased harvesting interval, oxalate content showed a decreasing trend.
Harvesting: The first cut is taken from 60 to 75 days after planting. Keep 5 cm stubble height from the soil/ground. Subsequent cuts are taken after 30-45 days. Annually at least 6 to 8 cuts are possible.
Yield: 250 - 350 MT/Hectare /year green fodder. Vegetative growth is reduced to dormant during winter.
Dairy farming may be a support to agriculture to reduce the risk of crop failure. However, success of dairy farming is largely depends on the feed & fodder of high nutritional value, which accounts for 65-70 per cent expenses incurred over the animal feeds. Inter cropping of Hedge lucerne in Hybrid Napier-Provides crude protein means balanced nutrition
Super Napier:
Fast Growth: It has fastest growth of 10 feet in 59 days; High Yield: In other words 500 tons per hectare, which can feed to 50 dairy cows for 12 months; Best Nutrition: Presence of 16-18 % of protein that is very important for animal’s particularly for dairy cows to produce more milk. All Weather Friendly Growth: Dr. KrailasKiyothong says that it is drought resistant and can grow any kind of location irrespective of wet or dry season. The only need is the soil rich in organic matter that make it perfectly suitable for Indian subcontinent. Thiland-“King of Napier”
This plant developed by the Thailand nutritionist Dr. KrailasKiyothong. He made this hybrid plant by crossing ordinary Napier grass with pearl millet named pakchong1 where it is developed.
Economic analysis of biogas obtained from the experiment with liquid petroleum gas (LPG) with benefit/cost ratio (B/C ratio) greater than 1 suggested that the Napier grass is considered as a potential energy crop.
My self Dr P. C. Patel, have carried out forage research work at Main Forage Research Station, Anand Agricultural University, Anand, Gujarat, India from 1982 to 2006. We have made 29 recommendations to the dairy farmers for obtaining higher forage crop productivity and net returns.
If any dairy farmers want my advise on forage production and quality, please contact on my email: patelpc12@gmail.com
How much fibre, ash, fat, moisture, protein and sandsilica and energy in dry Thailand super napier hybrid grass,it is used in poultry layer feed
Hybrid Napier Super gives the world highest green fodder yield record about 400 to 500 MT per hectare in one year with excellent fodder quality with high crude protein content and less fiber as compared to other Hybrid Napier grass.
You have to supply legume fodder like lucerne, berseem, cowpea, hedge lucerne, shevri, Subabul, etc as it contents more calcium. If not possible then supply concentrate having more calcium so no problem of any deficiency of Calcium.
