- Today I'm talking about developing simple skills that set the stage for all retrieving based activities. Never lose sight of the fact that advanced training is really just basic training wrapped up in a pretty package!
The Labrador's temperament as a kind, pleasant, outgoing and tractable nature. Labradors' sense of smell allows them to home in on almost any scent and follow the path of its origin. They generally stay on the scent until they find it. Navies, military forces and police forces use them as detection dogs to track down smugglers, thieves, terrorists and black marketers. They are known to have a very soft feel to the mouth, as a result of being bred to retrieve game such as waterfowl.
Labradors have a reputation as a very even-tempered breed and an excellent family dog. This includes a good reputation with children of all ages and other animals.Some lines, particularly those that have continued to be bred specifically for their skills at working in the field (rather than for their appearance), are particularly fast and athletic. Their fun-loving boisterousness and lack of fear may require training and firm handling at times to ensure it does not get out of hand-an uncontrolled adult can be quite problematic. Females may be slightly more independent than males. Labradors mature at around three years of age; before this time they can have a significant degree of puppy-like energy, often mislabelled as being hyperactive. Because of their enthusiasm, leash-training early on is suggested to prevent pulling when full-grown.Labradors often enjoy retrieving a ball endlessly (often obsessively) and other forms of activity (such as agility, frisbee, or flyball.)

Update Stonnie, you are an awesome dog trainer. Remington my Great Pyrenees started to pick up things I dropped on his own and bring them to me! So yes it will work out on its own don't worry about if your dogs will only pick up their toys and nothing else. I watch your channel all the time to help me train Remi because I wanted my service dog to bond with me and I LOVE the way you train. You break it down in bite size pieces for humans to learn also, lol. I have a small course like yours and we go thru it 2 times a day before we start to learn something new. Thank You sooooooo much again!
I think what I like most about your videos, besides your common sense training and life tips, is watching the dog’s happy attitudes. They are truly having fun. I enjoy your dog training videos more than any others I have seen. And I have watched a lot of different trainers, trying to learn how not to make the mistakes I made on my last puppy. Thank you.
I've trained my black lab svc dog kind of the same way. One thought is that I want him to pick up anything (hard to name all items). So I've also implemented the laser pointer. We started at one item then expanded slowly. Now I empty ALL of his toys on the ground and point to specific toys. Now he'll pick up anything, even a credit card on a smooth floor. Thanks for adding a service dog task to your repitoir.
Toys and credit cards are really good ideas. Have no doubt that you are a good dog owner with very good dogs.

Great video Stonnie! I would appreciate a video on the foundation of getting to the point in your video. Like picking it up... then getting it.... and bringing it to you. My dog is not a natural retriever (or any type of retriever for that matter), but I'd like him to learn. If you already have a video on these more remedial steps, maybe you can point me to it? I needed to see a dog like buck . My Buddy is a hyper lunatic most of the time and rarely does a retriever perfectly .

Another really fantastic video...very informative! Thank you so much!!! I love your training techniques...especially successive approximations...so important in teaching an animal a behavior. I also really like that you demonstrate on different dogs with different temperaments showing how to change your intonation to change the emotional response of the dog.

Interesting, clear and full of inspiration, as always. As a novice trainer, I am working with my young working Labrador retriever, whose character profile is much like Buck's, so not so easy to focus and calm down, but promising. I appreciated especially the session on retrieving for phisically impaired people, being disabled myself.
May I now suggest you a video topic for the future? Could you please tell us about training Retrievers the "traditional style" all-around, not relying on food but on voice tone, leash pressure and play instead, as you made with protection dogs a couple of years ago? Personally, I would much appreciate it!

Honestly it’s just too dangerous. Frisbees always end up of going places you don’t want them to go and dogs have a bad habit of putting their bodies in bad positions while attempting to make the catch. One bad landing and your dog is crippled for life...
Stonnie Dennis That’s the truth. I had a yellow Lab named Carli Cannoli. I trained her to fetch the frisbee, return it sit by my side, and wait for the next throw. It was a beautiful thing until the day she came down awkward on her back left leg and tore something. I felt forever terrible. You’re a wise man. Love your videos. Thank you!

Hello stony just a little FYI you basically trained my dog vicariously through me. Except I just hold my hand over his eyes and then throw the retrieving tool so he can’t see it and then send him to fetch it up instead of the arm, but I like the arm idea as the stop sign. 🛑 Love your videos man thank you very much
At any point in your retrieve training, do you address chewing the object? If the dog chews, how would you "fix" it?
23:00 do you use a whistle? Or do you create that sound with your mouth?
Awesome stuff Dennis, i have learned a lot from your videos. My lab pup is 3 months and 3 weeks old, his learning and socialisation are going great. he is a little possessive with sticks around other dogs. any tips? Whenever i need to leave him alone i try to get him very tired and leave him with toys, still, sometimes he cries a bit. is that normal in a pup this age?

Thank You soooo much with the video. I have been trying to train my service dog my self and your video really helped me a lot! Some times it is really hard because he is a Great Pyrenees so he really does not fetch as good as the labs, but I still need him to pick up things that I drop. I needed a big dog to help me so when I fall he can help me up. How do I get him to pick up other things that his toy? Will it just work out with time? Another problem I am having is when I am in the sitting position he likes to paw at me, I try to stop it by saying no paw and turn away, but he keeps doing it and my leg's aren't that strong already. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.
Yo Stonie... I got one that sometimes wants to take it off to the side and chew for awhile or maybe tug a little while before turning it over. What do you recommend for my chocolate lab?

What I noticed... the dog that "went to fetch on his own" -- @ 10:50 -- was reacting to your HAND GESTURE! your left hand went forward, just like your right hand would in the other times..
Stonnie, how do you get to the stage where your dogs prefer you and your company to that of the other dogs and the environment ? It’s awesome to watch.
He mentioned this in another video. I wish I could remember which one. He said that the key was to train them in the presence of many dogs in the beginning so that seeing another dog was nothing special. I started doing that with a recent adoption who came with behavior issues and is very excitable when he sees other dogs. We went from crazy pulling and howling when a dog is clear across the park to watching without pulling when they are across the park. Now he only pulls and howls if the other dog is also barking and pulling or if the other dog gets close.
We've only been working on it a few weeks but it gets better every time. It got drastically better after we went to a pack walk activity with about 30 other dogs. We followed at the back of the group and every time he got over excited we turned around. He quickly learned that if he wanted to be near the other dogs he needed to be calm.
I do it by taking very young pups out and 'losing them' - playing hide and seek so they very quickly realise it is their job to know where I am and not the other way round. It is not intuitive and not always easy because we worry the pup will get lost/hurt/into trouble and so we keep calling them back - but the more noise we make the less they need to watch us because they know we are just fine hollering like that.

Heard the disclaimer. But I've always played Frisbee with my dogs, why isn't it safe?
The most common problem is that the frisbee thrower makes and awkward throw and the dog’s ends up landing at a bad angle.

So.....you've trained some dogs to fetch. Very nice.
Very little practical information on how we, the viewers, can achieve similar results.
But, clearly, you did a nice job training the dogs before the video was shot. So, kudos for that.
