- Today Cool Classics takes a look at the life and career of actor Kenneth Washington, who played Sgt Richard Baker on the 6th and final season of Hogan's Heroes.
Well, as of 2022 he and Robert Clary are about the only surviving main cast members from Hogan's Heroes! Some of the guests are still living too like Nita Talbot who played Marya.
unfortunately robert clary has now died :( nov 16th
I personally know him, and he is alive and well, and living in Los Angeles.
You should interview him and share some of his history!

Really, that's great. Please let him know that he's still beloved as a member of Hogans Heroes and I will speak for everyone when I say I wish he would get a facebook page or something where his fans (like me) can show our love.
Thanks for that. He went back to school in the 80s and I had the pleasure of getting to know him a little bit in a philosophy class. I was an undiagnosed autistic girl and had trouble making friends but we hit it off pretty well. Very sweet man. I just found myself wondering what had become of him and found this video. Glad to know he's doing well.

This video is awesome! In the section showing a clip from O'Hara, U.S. Treasury the actor shown is not Kenneth Washington! That is actor Felton Perry, although actor Kenneth Washington did appear on the television show O'Hara, U.S. Treasury (TV Series 1971-1972) Kenneth Washington as Marv Dixon
Yeah I got screwed up on that clip, because the one on TH-cam was titled wrong. Once I downloaded and used the clip, it was too late. Now the other clip from O'Hara US Treasury, is gone from TH-cam.
Kenneth is still alive he also played a gas station attendant on a Police story episode he was a good actor I like his character as Sargent Baker

I always wanted to see a conclusion to this show (Hogan's Heroes) where they get liberated and what happened to each of them after the war ended. I wonder if there was a script for the following year that was just put on someone's shelf?
I wanted to see Klink finally make it to general.
There was a plan to revive the series. It would take place in the US with descendants of the original characters. I can't recall the details. It's in the Bob Crane's biography that his son authored. Excellent reading, for those like me who love Bob and "Hogan's Heroes".

I always thought that Baker wasn't so obvious because they were downplaying the switch. Thanks for this video. I was a Trekkie, and I never noticed him there. Maybe, if he's still alive, Mr. Washington can see this and respond...

@@CoolClassics If Kenneth Washington is still alive then Robert Clary is not the last Cast member of Hogan's Heroes who is still alive.
I recognised him from star trek, but I don't think he had many memorable roles. More of a jobbing actor. I'm guessing he quit acting when he had a family, and needed a steady income.

Just FYI: imdb is notoriously flawed when it comes to tracking actors who are not major stars. A lot of erroneous information, which is left to the actors themselves to monitor and correct. Obviously, it can be helpful, but it is by no means a definitive source.
And, also, just to let you know, the actor in the David Jansen clip is not Kenneth Washington. It's Felton Perry.
You are correct, I have found errors on IMDB as well.
He's still alive and along with Robert Clary, they are the last 2 main characters, Gavin MacLeod is still alive but he wasn't a main, he's 90, he was in 4 episodes of our beloved HH's, he might be the last of the extras from the show still with us.
Opps, Nita Talbot the "Sexy as heck Russian" is 91. Her famous "Hogan Darling" was her catch phrase

@@squint04 I always remember Gavin MacLeod best as "Murray Slaughter" from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". I do remember him in "McHale's Navy" but, like I stated, Murray on "MTM" best of all.

You know, you are exactly right. The actor in that clip is named FELTON PERRY. He was Clint Eastwood's partner in 'Magnum Force. Btw, the clip is from a show called, O'hara U.S. treasury and not Harry O.
The clip from O'Hara looked like Felton Perry.
I just looked him up and I believe you are correct.
So this makes about 8 of the IMDb listings incorrect.
It also shortens the career of Kenneth Washington.

It is Felton Perry. That is not Kenneth Washington. White people can not recognized black people like black people can. I remember him from Magnum Force in 1973. That is a part of the Dirty Harry Movies.

That does not look like Kenneth Washington on O’Hara United States Treasury. I know that actor and it’s not Mr. Washington. Just looked it up and the actor you showed in the clip is Felton Perry.

The shows from the 50s and 60s were saved on FILM. The shows from the 70s were on video tape.
to be more accurate the early shows are digitally remastered from the original film the 70's were not done as they went from film to tape and then direct to cd and dvd then blue ray .. but werent remastered as the tapes hadnt degraded enough to warrant the thousands of dollars to remaster them for EACH episode
That is why the quality varies so much
Cool Classics should address the Rural Purge of 1970-71 when CBS canned all of its lineup from the 60s. Hogan's Heroes was one of them.

I don't know if this is still possible but I'd like to see a bio on Arlene Martel (Tiger). She was an amazing character with such beautiful features. Those big eye and great smile. And her accent was lovely! Any chance you could do a video on her?

From an interview with Ivan, He was treated like a dog after the cameras were off. He hated being in Hollywood, which is why he moved to France. I think this guy suffered, because Ivan's exit was public and he made no bones about it.
Hollywood, instead of correcting their behavior, blames all the Black actors that come after the one that tells them off. Hence the reason why my career never took off. I got the "you're perfect for the role, but I can't hire you," or "I can't put a Black guy in the leading role, the producers would murder me"

More Hogan's Heroes videos? You're talking my language! They had a number of excellent guest stars you haven't touched on that would be good subjects for videos. How about Nita Talbot who played the Russian woman Marya and Bernard Fox who played Colonel Crittendon? Both were EXCELLENT on the show! A couple others that weren't in as many episodes that I think would have interesting videos are Oscar Beregi and J. Pat O Malley. I'll also suggest Hans Conried who played Major Bonacelli in the episode the Pizza Parlor which I thought was very funny.
I have planned on Nita and Bernard but the others are great suggestions too! Keep them coming :)

Nope and Baker got less screen time than Kinch.
I think it all caught them off guard. Just like the cancellation of the series in the off season.
They wouldn't be able to explain it and also keep referring to Klink's record of no escapes, so it was just never brought up. I wonder if Ivan Dixon recommended Kenneth to replace him?
They never explained how they constructed the elaborate tunnel system or established escape network either. The series seems to take place during '43 - '44 though. Doesn't follow any timeline though. They also don't explain the Fraueine Helga / Hilda change. In some episodes Schultz In fact the show was so far fetched and off the wall just about nothing is really explained for that matter.
They might have arranged a prisoner exchange, a German for an American. That's how I would have done it.

What is also weird is that Kinch was replaced by another black guy. Is it just black guys who are communications experts? Why am I worried about a sitcom that is 50 years-old?

If he started out in acting as a baby, then he most likely was born in the LA area. Maybe one or both of his parents had some connection to the film or TV industry. Maybe they were actors as well, or worked behind the scenes? Just speculating.
Hmm and going off of that, maybe his father was named Kenneth Washington and acted too? That could explain the confusion with IMDb. 🤔
@@CoolClassics There was an actor named Kenny Washington who was also a famous football player in the 1940s for UCLA and the LA Rams, but his son Kenneth Jr was a baseball player and not an actor. By the way, Kenny Washington's father was the actor Blue Washington. So this may explain the confusion on IMDB, but sadly it is not the family of Kenneth from Hogan's Heroes, unless Kenny was an uncle of Kenneth. Hope this doesn't confuse anyone. LOL By the way, you can see Kenny on an episode of You Bet Your Life here on TH-cam. It is the episode with Jack Lalaine in it.

Kenneth Washington is not that unusual a name. Could there have been someone else who was doing these things while Hogan's fifth hero was a child?
Maybe Kerry Washington was a daughter or some kind of relation?
I wonder if any of the studios he worked for could fill in the missing information for you.

My take on this is a house in east l.a. in the 1960s and 1970s would been cheap under 5000. So he could of done these but parts for ever. Couldn't do it today.

I did not care for Sgt Baker I found him to be boring and dull, he did not have what my Sgt Kintchloe had!
He could be only as interesting as the writers made him.
the scene from star trek makes little sense, here a woman clearly not part of the crew asks a question, he more than happily gives all this information which I'm assuming is classified then calls for Scotty.
While looking for a scene with Kenneth I watched a couple more clips.
The woman can teleport anywhere she wants. Kirk and a few more of the crew got trapped down on her planet by her. She gets on the enterprise and acts like she can help them.
