    This is supposed to be a parody but the sales tactics are actually very real

      No joke, I was asked to do that when selling Dish TV through an "authorized 3rd party seller". We were but we were shady as fuck. They told us it was "advanced persuasion" in training too. One lie I was told to tell was that people get their credit card information stolen all the time via hacks sourced from Netflix and Hulu. That DishTV was safer.

      I use the "not taking action is actually more expensive than the product I'm offering you" tactic all the time. Really puts things into the right perspective for the potential client.

      on the first day of training at a call center they said "never lie to a customer or you'll be fired" which soon turned into "I mean you have to lie to them obviously just don't lie about these specific things about the product, but yeah do tell whatever lie you want to make them buy it"

    • @backlogbuddies
      @backlogbuddies ปีที่แล้ว +55

      @@BarackLesnar Reminds me of when I worked a call center and they told us to make sure the customer was fully serviced and we didn't rush them. While putting us on a time requirement of 3 minutes per phone call. If you went above that you got in trouble.

    I was not expecting a "happy" ending. I thought Charles was going to come to his senses and realize his entire job is built on predatory lies, try to blow the whistle, but then be confiscated and tortured by SkyCrop, with Dick being found complicit and thus ruining their friendship by betraying him. But no. Charles overcame his struggle, his friendship with Dick is stronger, and neither faced a cruel consequence. The only bad thing here is the exploited customers paying a 4.99 month subscription and being more wary of the internet (which could be taken as a good thing?). outrageous as this video is it has very common selling points that work: fear, ignorance, insecurity.
    many cyber security products do not work or have very little effect. the main selling point of cyber security is simplifying complexity but at a cost to maintain ease of mind because the customer does not know better. i would classify it as an exploitative business model.
    take a anti virus for example, if the malware is already on the system running an av is a little late :(

    • @jadedandbitter
      @jadedandbitter ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, it can often let you know you have the malware in the first place. Then a boot into safe mode, running malwarebytes, some manual registry editing, etc is whats prescribed. But you never get to do that unless the antivirus/malware package hits.

      Windows defender is good enough for 99.99% of people. If your PC is compromised the only sure way to make sure it's safe is a bios flush and completely replacing the drives while burning the old ones. Good cyber security is about data handling processes, obfuscation, training, keeping track of exploits and updates and redundancy. Cyber security software is only good when it's designed to lock down systems to prevent Karen from HR from clicking on every hyperlink in her mailbox.

      @@jadedandbitter commercial anti virus products do work at detecting malware that has been seen in the wild but have a difficult time with custom malware. files are scanned via sha or md5 to a hash list that is updated that the client downloads or it can operate in holistic mode / behavior analysis, network scanning, or system integrity checks. if the malware is running on the system it can get elevated privileges and just disable the anti virus from running or inject code into that process to prevent a successful scan or remotely control it entirely. using an av is always the very last line of defense because if its on the system and running then you already lost.
      since so many computers have some type of scripting language what i have seen is powershell scripts that require the user to run it. normally its easy to see even from looking as the code if it does anything bad but the script can also be obfuscated so users will have no idea and this is extremely common because the av wont detect it and the user runs it with elevated privileges and it downloads the actual malware in a state where the computers av might be disabled/uninstalled just by running the script.

    "Advanced persuasion" is another way to say "Economical with the truth", which is another way to say "I made that shit up", which can also translate to "I lied": but no one will ever get to the point of realising it's a lie or made up if you don't tell them that it is, indeed, a lie... interesting.
    Man, that Dick really knows a thing or two about making a sale!

    0:57 - but what if the customer doesn't have a problem?
    *Then you make one*
    This literally happened to me at my first tech job. One day while fixing a computer my manager comes up to me and complains about my fixes that *don't have problems.* I tell him "But there's nothing wrong"... he turns around... grabs the harddrive for the computer in question and throws it to the ground in a controlled manner, just to enough to make it give off errors.
    He hands me the harddrive and says "check again".

      Someone ruining a hard drive is peak evil. Once data is unrecoverable you are screwing over someone's cherished memories forever. Want to ruin my CPU? Fine. Buy another. Speakers? Buy another. But data can at times not be recovered or replaced.
