    Great to see a regular vlog on the up! GTI again Andrew; feeding the addiction. (Especially so in light of your new toy). This is a worthwhile cost-effective mod to my mind. The stock headlamp bulbs emit a horrid yellow glow and the orange indicator bulbs are beyond retro, they date an otherwise modern looking headlamp unit for me. I did this to my TSI and it was the first retrofit to my GTI a few weeks ago now. As a tip and as the indicator bulbs are tight and you risk losing skin, the end of the air pipe on the off-side only clips in place and can be removed easily by wiggling it. With that removed you have better access on this side than you do on the near-side with the washer filler removed (which I did also). The OSRAM Lasers perform better and are crisper IMHO. So it isn't merely a case of aesthetic benefit. LED interior bulbs really make a huge difference too, especially with no light unit in the rear. Another good modification over stock. Keep up the good work. Cheers.

    Got the same lights a week ago only with the Osram Cool Blue Intense.
    Looks the same real nice and white 😁
    And you can always look at the plug how the light is mounted 😉
    And like the other comment:
    You can just remove the airintake in 1 second 😁
    And over here the light is always set at the top hight (1,2%?? or something) the last time i worked at the VW dealer?
    But that's a long time ago 😜

    I used nightbreakers in both my old polo, old golf and new Ibiza. The difference I found (with H7's) was night and day, much whiter looker, the beam went further, made the old headlights look pants in comparison. However to get the full effect, I did have to use the wee adjuster by the headlight switch and keep them looking as high up as possible.

    Not sure how different it is to my own car, but with mine, I find it much easier to unscrew and take out the whole headlight cluster, then replace the bulbs, re-position and re-screw. Mainly because I can see what I am doing. Is there a reason why you did not go this route? As I see your headlight cluster has mounting screws at 4:07. Love seeing your GTI !

    Did the same bulbs in mine the other day and this video was really useful so thankyou! One thing i found that made it much easier to get to the offside indicator bulb was that the end of the air intake, the nozzle actually just clips off dead easy which makes loads of room. 👍🏻

    I put these Osram Night Breaker bulbs in my 2006 Toyota Corolla (USA, CA) and it made a really good difference! The light goes a good amount further then OEM rated lights and the white light makes everything look not yellow either!!!!!!! I also replaced my highbeam bulbs (Corolla has a separate high beam bulb) with Flosser high performance bulbs and it like I have a light bar on when i turn on my high beams. I go into the San Bernardino mountains and High Desert region a lot and on those dark lonely empty highways, using the Orsram and when permitted the highbeams, i can see everything even far away, absolutely love German engineering

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bob, that's interesting but I always though the adjuster was set as high as possible by default and it was there to lower the beam when the back of the car was weighed down with luggage? I've just checked my car and there is an adjustment dial hidden behind the wiper stalk - it was set to '-' which is as high as they will go from what I understand.

    I tend to think that headlights with H4 type bulbs don’t seem to be very good in general . Our Ford KA & Fiat Fiorino both have H4 bulbs and the light they give off is poor. Upgrading to Osram Nightbreakers has made a slight difference but could be better. The Mini Cooper that we used to have had brilliant lights on standard bulbs, that had separate bulbs for dipped and main beams.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point Stuart, 2 jobs, 1 bulb will never be as good as having 1 bulb per beam. I drove a Mk5 GTI with Osram NIghtbreaker Laser yesterday (2 bulbs per lamp) and the spread of dipped beam was so much better.

      Some nicer lights would have been good but I just think the budget wasn't there plus they'd be heavier and costlier to replace in accident which would affect insurance.
      And they'd make the cars a thief magnet as people will be stealing them to repair damaged ones rather than buying them (well in the West Midlands they would!). Insurers would write them off earlier too feeding the demand for used parts.
      I think adjusted properly and with some good bulbs they work fine anyway.

      Hey Alvega, thanks for commenting. I've had a look on the car for the spoiler extension part number but there is nothing visible. If anyone with access to ETKA can post the part number that would be great. I use an online version that only goes to 2017 MY.
      There are lots of ways the Up! GTI can be improved and a strut brace would probably be sensible yes. However there is something very loose at the front end down below that I'd attend to first. If you drive off a low kerb with the wheels at 90 degrees to the kerb something doesn't feel right. It's fine in every other situation though but when driving hard (using a lot of torque) over bumps there can be a loss of traction and a sensation of 'tramp' which is possibly related.

The outer one is dipped and is on a holder, the inner one for main beam is clipped in. Are these things 'road legal' (= pass MOT) also do they not blind other drivers in oncoming traffic?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are 100% road legal as they are simply halogen bulbs. They are far less likely to blind other road users than the factory fit xenons on some cars that fully comply with the law! The biggest issue is HID conversions where people fit xenon/HID bulbs into cars not designed for them. Often the headlamps are out of adjustment too. They rightly became an MOT failure in the UK in May 2018 (i.e. illegal) but I still see a few daily (you can not miss them) and with so few police on the roads nobody is going to be too fussed about refitting them after an MOT test has been passed on the standard bulbs (same with illegally spaced number plates..)

    Why not use LED?

    I'm going to ripp them out of my Polo soon. Not because of their yellow light but because they're rather dim. As far as i figuered out VW uses some long life lamps from osram.
    But I won't go with the Nightbreaker, I'll fit Phillips X-treme Vision 130. The Nightbreaker Laser and Philips Racing Vision don't last very long.

    These bulbs are laser.. they are only called laser because a laser was used to etch the osram name on the glass. nothing to do with any form of performance

    Great video as always, the up gti is going to be a future classic! Any chance of seeing the new indicators bulbs working too.

    A bulb is something one plants in the ground and it will then grow. A lamp is something that gives off light.
