I've been making short films for 20 years, starting at age 11. I directed my first feature film, Bad is Bad, in 2010. Made for only $6,000, the film went on to reach over 7 million views and garner critical acclaim. I liked your breakdown of this subject. For some reason I wanted a similar analysis of the characters and character arcs in Office Space. I feel this film was great because each character was so well developed.

I’ve seen a few videos from this channel and from what I’ve watched, the guy posts informative and interesting videos that have to deal with processes behind filmmaking. I like to write, but the main thing I’m trash at is characters, I can describe and write long stories, just no good characters, thanks.

I have a question! While working around one of my own stories, ive developed quite a few stock characters. Is it necessary to go into detail about who they are, where they're from, their backstory, likes and dislikes?? Or simply state the basic and important things needed to be known about them and adress their role in the story?

break up with her boyfriend.
One great example of memorable characters is undoubtedly the ones in THE HANGOVER trilogy..... Stu, Doug, Alan and Phil were ever lasting in our minds!!! And all of them were active throughout, had strong beliefs and of course were Rule-Breakers....

I am making my first short film and right now all I have is an Idea how do I turn my idea into a story
What I do is I link the idea to a literary theme like love, consequences etc afterwards I figure out what question or statement I'm trying to answer or debate that links to the theme, as in "Can love conquer anything?" "How far would you go to support your family if your days were numbered?" Something like that.
Then I create my Protagonist or if I have characters in mind already I pick my Protagonist (link them to the theme) and then I do the same thing for all of my other characters, by first considering their want and their belief and then their background, personality (values, likes and dislikes), then their relationships (including characters they clash with), and culture (the wider world they live in and, if it matters, their position/role in that world).
Then you'll have your cast and then you can build your plot. For more info on plot, my go-to video is:

I have a question about this.
I'm writing a script to a horror movie, were the killer is also the main character. (Kind of like American Psycho) However, I don't the viewers to know this until the end, and I also want to make it believable that he isn't the killer. Something I have noticed when watching movies were the killer is hiding their identity, they seem like a background character with out much detail. Like they're supposed to be over looked. So I'm wondering while writing the main character, if I should make it so only one side of him follows the "rules" in your video, and if the other "side" of him should be kind of bland and boring.

the fact that you brought pirates of the carribean as an example of a "boring passive main character" being a bad thing pretty much proves you wrong on its own.
it's not that i'd say it's bad advice, in fact it's probably pretty good advice for people who aren't writer experts. i myself wouldn't really want a passive main character in my story.
but i think "having passive main character = bad" whole thing is a misconception, that i dislike
and i believe the same for every advice in this video. good advice, but that doesn't mean the opposite can't work and i believe that is important to address

Thats bullshit. Ive been involved in several projects that were character pieces that fell apart because there was no story, as in no goal that forced an evolution in the character.
I strongly disagree with your opinion on the importance of the story, I think a good story is a good thing but not a necessary thing to make a good movie. For me some of the best movies like shawshank redemption, no country for old men , the godfather ,all have very basic stories and for me what make them very impressive is the technical aspect and what the filmmaker did with the story .
Love your video, but the choice of Will Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean as an example of a passive main character felt like a complete misreading of the character. At multiple points he takes definitive action that drives the plot, especially in Acts 2 and 3. With such a poor example I couldn't help feeling like it actually took away some credibility. I know this video is a year old but I hope that's something you can improve on in the future. In fairness, it's safe to say that Jack Sparrow steals the show, but that doesn't prove Turner to be passive.
Misleading video
I'm not sure it's worth it to try to tell todays audience a good story. So jaded by video games bad movies and they recognize the ingredients, they should make their own films
