  • Vostok Amphibia is like a brother from another mother to the Bulova Mil Ships. These watches are very different but at the same time very similar to one another. The Vostok can be had for about $125 and the Bulova for around $900 Canadian. Lots of great information on the net and youtube about both these watches. If you don’t want to spend more then a couple hundred dollars then the Vostok is a fantastic deal with tons of history. You will not find a local distributor of Vostoks here in North America, most are coming directly out of Russia and will take over a month to land in your hands. Ebay has plenty of sellers but make sure to check up on the sellers history. Another place would be some of the Vostok watch groups found on Facebook. The Bulova is a fantastic watch that is a bit of an odd duck but man is it cool. If you want something a little out of the ordinary this would be a great watch but it is not inexpensive. If you have any questions please reach out and I’ll be happy to answer your questions.

The movement in the Standard Mil-Ships is a Miyota 82s0. In the limited edition a Sellita SW200 is used. Only 1000 limited edition watches were made and are about double the price of the standard edition. Should be noted that the bezel inserts on both Mil-Ships editions are made of an anodised aluminium with the limited edition having lume

Thank you for the review of the two watches. The Bulova has been calling to me but I want to get the Swiss version so I am hunting the right price break. As for the 16 mm strap: yeah a bit weird but straight up respect that Bulova stuck as close as humanly possible to the original specs.

Good comparison, I own five Vostoks but hadn't seen the Bulova before. I must say I prefer the Vostok, 18mm lugs are a bit narrow, but 16 looks too narrow to my eyes. I have heard some older Bulova watches had the compression ring back, so good to see it return, it is a much better system than the usual screw in backs. Subscribed 👍

The Vostok does look better but the quality of build is considerably better in the Bulova hence the price difference.

The vostok is a true gem. The aftet market bezel is sweet. I think the dial may be discontinued, but there are some that are kinda close.

Your Amphibia has a 2416b movement; the date change is "non-quick ", so you have to move the hands round and round or forwards and backwards and forwards again to change the date - get a 2415 no-date and maintain sanity! What's the movement on the Bulova, by the way?
I like the 120 case too. They are both great looking watches, bearing the price difference in mind. Thanks for this video. Still Halloween where you are, I believe, so enjoy. Cheers 🍻!

It is a great looking watch. The very thin watch strap is a love it or hate it kinda thing. At first I didn’t like it but after some time I started to appreciate it.

This isn't a head-to-head I would have expected! I'm a huge Vostok guy, I have 4 of them myself. Two Amphibias, one that's only a year old and one 2nd edition tonneau 119 from the 1970s, a Komandirskie from the mid 90s, and a 60s dress watch. They're cheap and crude, but I have to admire the engineering that went into their mil-spec watches. Especially considering the constraints applied by the Soviet government when they were commissioned. Not to mention the horrendously understated water performance. Sure they state 200m but many tests have been run on various Amphibia models and they survive consistently twice their depth rating! That Bulova is beautiful, but the Vostok (from my experience) is always a conversation starter. So glad to see Vostok content!

I have many watches and tend to collect watches of historical significants specially if they are a bargain. The Vostok ticks both boxes in spades, the Bulova on the other hand ticks only one box and that is of historical significance. If I didn’t have to pay for the watch the Bulova wins rather easily but money is always a determining factor for most people, and this is where the Vostok is king! The 2 watches are very similar in design and can see the Vostok modding community replicating the Mil-Ships very easily with a dial, bezel and hand change. Would love ❤️ to see a Vostok Mil-Ships homage.

@@RenaissanceRoster To each their own, I kinda like it. It’s the same thing with date or no date or to have a cyclops or not. With out a doubt the Mil-Ships can be polarising but with out a doubt it has stayed very true to its original design.

The amphibia sucks, especially compared to the mil ships. The history alone takes the cake. With the double sapphire domed crystal, water strip on the face, cathedral hands it’s just unmatched . I’ve never seen a 16mm lug width that hits this fkn hard❤ I wear it over my day date .. the looks is just too nice
