Looks really cool! To be honest I first thought this would be for something with really good flat surfaces like metal or glass.
Wouldn't the holding power not also be dependent on the permeability of the wood?

Yes, wood permeability comes into play. You need a pump with enough volume capacity (CFM) to overcome that.
