    Thanks to this excellent video, I just put together my new composting bin very quickly. I used a rubber mallet to get the lid on.

    So glad you demonstrated this ! I bought one identical but without any instructions at all and no little fasteners. I think this bin is sold by a load of different businesses at different prices and maybe that partly accounts for small differences, Anyway that business with the lid was the same with me and I was really grateful for your sharing.❤

    So I have heard if you add worms it helps turn the compost into soil. I had one sort of like that one but I never turned it about or added leaf and grass clippings so it never really became soil. Kind of compost chunks.

    • @PlanetImo
      @PlanetImo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine is full of worms already actually - they wormed their way in. The stuff at the bottom of the compost bag looked pretty composty, but saturated as I think rain water had got into it.

    That literary looks like Parkside compost bin from Lidl (I was looking for reviews on it; your vid showed up): same dimensions, same colouring... someone has done a rip-off, especially, since it didn't has a colourful branded box with instructions inside~

    So helpful! I just bought what looks like an identical compost bin on Ebay and was a bit worried as it looked a bit flimsy, but I feel better now seeing yours as it is really sturdy. When mine arrives I’ll also know how to put it together, so thanks again! 👍🏻

  • @mike-cl7pb

    Thanks for this I wanted to check out the construction becuase I want to insulate the sides to increase the internal temperature and speed of composting. being square this should be quite easy to do using 50-75mm polystrene wall insulation which I'll add cable ties and flat plastic load washer pieces to. I've already drilled a old plastic 75mm pipe and pushed it into the centre of my circular compost bin to help airiate the contents and will try and make something similar for this type maybe even using plunbing connectors to duct it into the sides. I've got the ideas from looking at the far more expensive hot composters insulation seems to be the key.

    I have four of these bins - they're fine. But if you want to assemble it inside, I would check that you will be able to get it through your doorway. Once assembled, it's not easy to take apart as the click-together joints may snap.

    • @PlanetImo

      That sounds like very good advice! Thanks so much, Reg.

    Now the rat will think it is a cozy house to move into! It does look like a house. The soil made will be at the bottom where the sliding door is located so you can use it for your plants. Years ago my old neighbor used to have a three walled wooden bin in the yard. I have a metal fence enclosure so the leaves don't blow out in the autumn. That was a small workout to assemble your new bin, it does look very nice.

    • @PlanetImo

      Yes! You're probably right! We transferred the contents of that compost bag over today and were half expecting ratty to come leaping out. He didn't, though. Thanks for watching, as always. Have a lovely evening, Karen. x

    • @PlanetImo

      Yeah, I think it's pretty big. I suppose it depends on the size of the lawn and how much you have in the way of cut grass! :¬) I'll also ass what little I generate of my garden waste plus things like torn up newspaper and egg boxes and things. Thanks so much for watching! :¬)

    Good morning...... I feel your excitement over your compost bin. And... I see you found a pointy pair of scissors. :)
    That was one well packaged package. I always keep that foamy layer too, as it comes in handy when I pack items for the thrift shop, or wrap items to send through the mail.
    That is a nice looking sturdy composter, and seems easy enough to put together. Did your compost from over this past year breakdown into what is somewhat a soil? I'm going to check my amazon and see what there is for a composter. Thanks for sharing... 💟

    • @PlanetImo

    Thanks, I'm very interested in getting my waste compost and recycling sorted so I'm thankful for your info, I've been looking at You Tubes about it and they have said not to put tea bags in as they have plastic in them and also attract rats, and as you have said they been dragging the tea bags about, that may be the reason you can put the contents of the teabags jus, not the bag its self, hope this helps xx

    • @PlanetImo
      @PlanetImo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no! 🤦‍♀️ So it might have been the teabags! They make up quite a substantial proportion of my organic waste, too! 😂 Thanks for the tip off. I must say, there's something quite satisfying about composting and Ive still got lots to learn about it. Good luck with yours and thanks for the tip.

  • @WormsEyeView

    ive never had a compost bin, I don't understand what they are for or what you put in them 🤦🏻‍♀️ so this has helped somewhat but, does it make soil ? what do you do with it when its full? im so confused, im nearly 40 and don't understand this lol x

    • @PlanetImo
      @PlanetImo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It kind of makes soil, yeah, well, potting compost sort of stuff. You add non-cooked plant based waste like peelings, coffee ground, bits you chop off your raw veg etc. Egg shells can also go in. I've always put teabags in, but someone has suggested they're not good after all, so I'm not sure whether to advise them, now. You DON'T put cooked food as it attracts rats. You can include ripped up egg boxes and some relatively pure cardboard, avoiding staples, sticky tape or ink, you know. Obviously grass clippings, weeds, old bunches of flowers, dead leaves etc. Garden waste that will decompose. It's best not to have it too wet, I am told, but you can balance it out a bit wet dry stuff like egg boxes. Some people add wee! I'm kind of an amateur at it, tbh, but it reduces my food waste for collection A LOT plus I'll eventually get compost out of it, so it's a win-win. Oh, and it's satisfying. x

    Wow, that’s a big compost bin! What will you do with the compost if you accumulate more than is needed for your plants? (I’m unfamiliar with composting, lol. I usually toss all of my compost stuff in my yard-waste bin, which the city empties on garbage day.)

    • @PlanetImo
      @PlanetImo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think I'll ever make too much as it shrinks down a lot. I currently have a big shortage of earth to grow my plants in. I'll likely have to buy some as it is. It's very simple and satisfying to make your own compost - I reckon you could get into it. :¬)

I can easily forage for a bit more on my walks, I guess... though I think it's somewhere between a 1/4 and a 1/3 full of stuff accumulated since last late spring, so you might be right!!
