My instructor uses potties for raised poles haha! They are the perfect shape to kind of cup the pole. She picks them up for a couple of quid each in IKEA
I have the same 😊 2,5€ per pot! Only downside is, that they easily "fly around" when the horse touches the pole

This was such an informative video. I'm sorry you have to spend so much time explaining your training decisions to try to avoid nasty comments. I always believe that if a horse is truly uncomfortable, and they have such a strong flight response to anything scary, they would not be willing to work. I mean, who is bigger, the horse or the trainer?

I just want to prelude this reply by saying it is definitely not aimed at Holly/Fiona or anyone in particular, it is just a topic I feel strongly about and I felt compelled to reply...
The fact that horses are flight animals is precisely the reason they ARE very unlikey to show they are uncomfortable or in pain - as they don't want to appear 'weak' to any predators. I, like Holly, am also studying to be a Veterinarian and recently at a clinic a horse, who according to the rider/owner was showing no signs of pain or discomfort at all, was found to have the worse case of gastric ulcers the vet had seen in his entire career. It was certain that this would cause a tremendous amount of pain for the horse yet he had been 'suffering in silence' so to speak. It is impossible say an animal is NOT in pain.
The fact that horses are bigger than us means nothing in my opinion - by that logic: why do elephants and lions perform in circuses? Who is bigger? The elephant or the trainer? Why do dancing bears perform in chains in some parts of asia? The reason is because the majority of these animals, horses included, learn that there is no point saying 'no' or showing resistance because they will just be forced to do the task anyway. For example, you use your leg to ask your horse to go forward, he walks backwards and tosses his head. You keep kicking and/or whipping until he goes. If you do this every time, your horse learns that there is no point trying to tell you he doesn't want to go forward for whatever reason (ill fitting saddle, lameness, etc) because the adverse stimulus will increase whenever he tries, increasing the level of discomfort. It makes me sad because I am guilty of doing this for 10+ years of my riding career and also because we seem all too often to label the horse as 'naughty' when they are almost certainly trying to tell us something. Horses only shoe the truth, they do not have the cognitive abilities to 'be naughty' or deceive the human.
We can't expect our horses to 'tell me when something is wrong/uncomfortable/painful' if we correct/ignore/punish them every time they do.
I am sorry for the long comment, it is just something I have become passionate about as I have gone through 6 years of college. I hope someone finds this interesting or enlightening in some way:)

I really was just speaking "off the cuff" because Holly has had some very negative comments from other trainers. I should think more about what I am actually saying, shouldn't I? I am 56 and been riding most of my life, and I have always found trainers that see things from the horses point of view. And, how I as the rider, can help and encourage the horse to perform with positive reinforcement. I love that you are passionate and that is wonderful that you have been able to have so many years of education. Have a wonderful holiday!

Great video. I just took over the ride of a pony who’s neck looks like Fiona’s in the photo, we’ve started the journey to get him muscled up again. I’m going to start him on ground poles today, if it ever stops raining.

I don’t use side reins personally so I don’t know too much about the mechanics of them ☺️
How long do you generally lunge for?
I have a question, whenever I am either riding or lunging my horse Image, he refuses to go over poles or even a single pole. He will be trotting around and I really try to encourage for him to go over them but then he walks and won't trot over the pole no matter what. I had him checked and he is sound and everything! He has the muscle to do it too it's not like he's skinny. I just thought I would ask since I don't know why. Thanks
Quinn he wants to get out of work. If you want him to trot over the poles, leg and leg and LEG. My mare was (and still kinda is) super lazy when it came to moving forward, so lots of leg really helps. Good luck 😁

Perfect titming, my horses top line is pretty weak rightnow, and it's my fault, so I'm trying to build it up!

She's actually so big that it doesn't fit her! haha she has the biggest girth out of all the horses I have

Yes I do a bit of canter too :) and once a week usually. Small circles on the lunge can be quite hard on their legs if you do it too often ☺️

My horse would fall on his face if I canterd a pole a raised trot pole be would eat it like hit the ground hard he can't jump he got hurt when he was young which is ok I would fall off idk why I thought that was important but I did so yea my horse can't do that

Because she doesn’t live in the field, she lives in the stable and only stands in there to be tacked up

Not to be rude at all but I must say that the “white foam” in her mouth is not a good thing. Have you ever tried bitless?
Did you know that horses get those white foam lips when they ride bitless correctly too actually?
Lilly With2Ls there is no need to be mean Holly has done nothing wrong it is totally normal sorry that you have to face these mean comments Holly.
That "white foam" actually means the horse is accepting the bit, and their jaw is relaxed

8:40 a horse is not neccesarily working throught its bum/back just because it is moving fast, as this can and should be done at any speed. ideally you should not need lunging aids to get your horse in a frame or even collected in the lunge. Sometimes these lungeing aids actually do more harm than good because, like you say yourself, it teaches the horse to avoid the bit, and not how to have a healthy contact.
9:28 sure, but it is still forcing her somewhat into a headset. She can move her neck and face a bit, but it is still quite fixed. If it wasnt it wouldnt work ;)
and again at 10:05 the horse really isnt using itself that well. It is very much on the forehand and leaning in with the shoulder. Her trot is very short and stiff. The rythem she has over the poles is what you should be lookin for - maybe not as exagerated. here she is taking longer steps and her rythem is much slower while still keeping the pace. Ik that is what you are doing, but the horse should do it when it isnt going over the poles too.

I never said a horse is working over their back if they're moving fast. I said you should make sure they're working from behind by putting energy into the trot with the whip, the same way you would with your leg.
I completely disagree with you saying that you shouldn't need lunging aids to get a horse into a frame on the lunge. If that is true, then are you saying that when you ride a horse and just drop the reins completely, they horse should work in a frame? The training aid serves as your contact when you're riding, if there was no training aid, it would be like riding a horse but only being able to use your inside rein (the equivalent of the lunge rope). Please educate me if this is wrong because I truly don't understand the point of lunging a horse without a training aid, surely you could just let them loose around the arena and that would be the same thing?

Its only "forcing her" as much as holding a contact with your reins are "forcing" a contact. She isn't being held in one position.
The reason I use the trotting poles is to encourage her to lengthen her trot so that she loosens out and will then move better when the poles aren't there. You don't know this horse, so I don't expect you to understand, but her trot used to be horribly stiff, this is actually a huge improvement. I never said she was a perfect model, I actually said in the video that she has a long way to go.

i agree, that you cant collect a horse by letting go of the reins, but i dont think lungeing aids act as your hands in the lunge. I find that i can ask my horse to use it self with my body language, energy and lungeline, and no aid. i sometimes use 2 lungeing ropes to act as my reins instead. I find aids are very poor as acting as your hands as they (no matter how flexible they are) sets the neck and head in a position, where the horse then keeps that position as that is where they have the least amount of pressure on the bit. You cannot comunicate with your horse through the lungeing aid like you do (or should) with your hands when you ride, and therefore i dont think it teaches the horse anything useful.
I find that being more active myself when i lunge makes my horses move way better and more focused than if i put lungeing aids on her. I once got a lesson from this "horse whisperer". i was so sceptical at first because she talked about how i need to use energy to get my horses going, so no talking, barely any movement and no whip. But fuck did it work. She tried lungeing my sour ass mare and she whent from a walk to a canter multiple times only from the woman carrying herself differently. I've been lungeling that way ever since, and it even helps me collect my horse with little to no aids in the lunge.
Also you are talking about pressure/release when being in your lungeing aid. You were saying (in the time stamp that i put in) that the aid makes the horse find a position where it gets release ie goes away from the bit. I therefore further explain that lungeing aids usually teaches a horse to avoid the bit rather than contact, which lined up with what you explained about pressure/release. That is one of the reasons why i personally dont like lungeing aids, as i dont think they teach the right thing.
And i get you are using the poles to achive better collection/movement, and theres nothing wrong with that. I think its a pretty good tool. I just dont think that it helps much, if the only time the horse is correctly using itself is when it is going over the poles. I therefore point out that you might want to teach the horse to collect outside of going over the poles rather than expecting the exercise to teach your horse to move well on its own.
If i lunge with a whip i also use it to push the bum out, and the reins to move the shoulders up. That is what you use your hands and legs for when you ride. Not just for speed or a headset :)
