Hey ! Little late but still : for the "first note" problem, it's actually Logic that won't play a midi note except if it runs since the beginning of it. But you can go to File>Project Settings>Midi>Chase and enables "Notes"' Then your midi notes will sound even if you hit Play in the middle of it :)
This is great. I have been searching for a simple explanation. All the tutorials I looked at start with an eye chart already populated with loops and a lot of the presentations/tutorials get off track and many times focus on the person instead of the lesson. You keep it simple and stay on topic. Very professional. Thank you.
Hey man, I’m running my live set through here. What I’m not doing is trying to record and build live. Ive got my mastered stems that I’m dropping into cells and it has a super fun vibe. Breaking it down by drums bass guitar blah blah, and hh snare kick etc. it’s been super reliable, I play live guitar parts and have my midi set up with Keyscape on a separate computer.
Great video! An easier way to change the tempo may be to map it to midi controller knob or slider with “Learn Assignment”. This allows the you to change the tempo live, so you don’t have to plan everything in advance.
Another simpler and more live friendly version of you method would be to Set the tempo changes at short fixed lengths, say every 8 bars. The. Use cycle mode with a fixed length of say 4 bars. This would make it super fast and easy to simply drag the cycle range to the new tempo. As the cycle is only half the length of the tempo section you can be fairly sloppy with dragging and dropping in a live environment and amd still be sure of hitting the correct tempo. The other advantages are that you don’t need to ever worry about the tempo section being too short and it makes the arrange window view much more concise so easier to navigate than a series of 150 bar tempos.
Also there's the Meta Event 100, Tempo Control. Not sure if it can be inserted directly but one can have the tempo fader (under Environtment > New > Fader > Specials) respond to any CC message (insert those at the beginning of any region). The bummer here is that this obviously doesn't work in the live loop window. It does work in arrange though. If it did work in the live loop window, one could trigger a loop with said CC at the beginning and change the tempo right on the next "1", in the middle of the song. Then prepare several empty loops, each with a different tempo CC in it, and trigger them as required. These arre clumsy workarounds for things that every cheap arranger keyboard proabably had as a basic feature for decades.
Thanks a ton for this video. I was so confused as to why noone is talking about how to use live loops live… now it's a little more clear. I really thought Logic wanted to become an alternative to Ableton Live. I hope they (still) have that ambition!
its the biggest piece of crap! Nothing is synced at least when you wanna record real instruments. Bugs, drop outs, automatically changes settings. It just absolutely useless right now. If you wanna get into live looping you need to get ableton and thats really disappointing.
@@CaberraTV What do you mean "nothing is synced"? Are you definitely setting up your audio cell defaults to what you want them to be, for what you're trying to do (if you're recording "real" instruments, as audio)?
@@NathanJamesLarsen Thanks for your amazing videos Nathan , i had produced an album on Logic and i wanted to perform all 10 songs live . Now performing a single track is not at all difficult , But what happens if i want to create an entire set of 10 songs to be played live 1- all the songs have different tempos and instruments and some midi tracks and some audio tracks , How does one create a single project to do so . I have tried many options 1- putting different tempos in the arrangement view 2- putting different tempos in cells 3- even tried making separate project alternatives The idea was to simply create one workflow where there are no audible pauses during the entire 45 minutes of performance . But each time opening the alternatives Logic flashed a warning saying project is damaged. What would be the best workaround to have a seamless performance without opening separate projects . Pls help Thanks
Nathan I believe the first note you mentioned cuts out because I'm sure if you look at the midi information in the tracks view, you might see that you pressed that note slightly before the start of the measure (like if you split a region and Logic asks if you want to keep any note that's separated by the new region). happened all the time when I record in the tracks view, for example when rolling a chord or just playing slightly ahead of the beat. If you record the pad again and just start slightly behind the first click, it should loop on the first go round. I definitely feel you, it'd be nice if there was a way for logic to recognize notes played slightly before a cycle.
Could jumping to the next marker be triggered by a midi parameter set in a midi live loop? Depending on your live set you might not have the time to make the jump manually at the exact moment.
@@sooperheep hey thanks for the comment but in a live performance you most probably don't want to load a new project everytime the bpms change through out your set
@@auraaudio673 why not, does it take a while to open a new project? I figured if all you have saved is a different BPM it'd probably load pretty quick and would keep things cleaner. Seems like doing the BPM automation on the timeline would just get messy and maybe introduce some glitchiness since you have all this other stuff going on previously in the timeline. Surprising that years later there hasn't been a solution for this, though I just found out about live loops and have been watching lots of vids so maybe I'll come across something more recent
@@auraaudio673same issue. I am trying to design a whole 60 min set with Live Loops + playing guitar and singing Is this possible? What sort of workflow do you recommend with Live Loops for whole set with tempo changes and multiple scenes per song People do this all the time in ableton How do we do it in logic?
I never really looked into Logic Live Loops and now I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with for updates. I love the idea of being able to use Logic because it’s not worth it to pay for the upgraded Ableton . Thanks for a sharing a good video and the knowledge.
late to the game: for a live set, that has various BPM and time signatures, where you don't need to know how long the song is going to be exactly. Just setup your tempo and signature (and even key if needed) for every 8 bar in the global lane (as shown in the video at 12:00). Create a marker for each of those 8 bars. Activate Cycle and hit play. Now you can just click the numbers on your computer keyboard and Logic will set the Cycle locators to the according marker. This works great for up to 9 markers obviously ;)
Awesome that you mentioned changing tempo via arrangement window. It'd sure be awesome if logic adapted some of the ableton features like scene launch with their own tempo
About the first note issue. That happens because you start playing slightly before the count it finishes (not even half a second but still is before). If you try to start the note lets say in the second beat, it will work fine. I have had a lot of headaches with that, and the solution is really easy. Simply start playing 1 milisecond after the count it finishes instead of before. It took me a while to get used to that though.
Thank you for the explanation :) It is not a bug to skip a first note: Logic sends a note-on message on the first beat but you let go of the key, sending a note-off message.
You are my hero. Because of your video, I was finally able to manage that. Even though I don't have a launchpad, the iPad trick works wonders :) Thank you! Now I don't have to buy Ableton as well.
What I did with the time signature is that I have a cycle section of two compases and the cycle section is moved through markers in the timeline with a midi command in my FCB1010.
Very nice content Nathan! The only way I have found to avoid this absurd first note problem, is to go to piano roll and perfectly place the first note at the beginning of the bar. Otherwise it will miss it. Logic asumes you have to be “machine perfect” playing at the beginning of the bar. You are absolutely right, it is annoying...
Hey Nathan, first off thanks this helped!.. also, to fix the midi issue its a setting.. click option p (alt p) to open project settings.. click midi, click chase, click to enable 'notes' then make sure to tick 'sustained'.. that should fix it
This is perfect thank you! Was considering getting Ableton to use the Launchpad controller (probably the Mini) and didn't realise I could use it with Logic. I loved you turning it around to match up! Cheers it was sooooo helpful
Yes but how do we design a whole set with this workflow in logic? People do it a lot in ableton but any idea how to approach a Live Loops 60 min set with 10 different songs in logic?
For MIDI / software instruments this works quite well. When you start adding audio tracks, however, things tend to get buggy. When you add or delete an audio track, every so often (ballpark: 1 out of every 20 times) playback just stops, which is a real buzzkill when performing live. I've also experienced the record-arm button on all tracks to become unresponsive during playback. You have to stop playback for them to "listen" to clicks again. These two bugs make Logic unusable for me in a livelooping setup.
I was going to type this same thing. I use audio tracks for guitar and while playing I usually can’t switch tracks or start recording on a new track, which make live performance impossible.
That first note cutting off on the second time around I think is because it is not quantizing in real time. It is waiting until you've stopped playing or the end of the loop before applying the quantization and that hasn't been completed by the time the 1 downbeat happens. Just a theory. Been a year now....wonder if they've corrected it. I'm about to switch from Digital Performer. For sequencing anyway. It's funny, we lead. In other words, our first note hit is in FRONT of the downbeat. If you can hit it beHIND the beat then it will be INSIDE of your cell on the second go around and would play.
Hey Nathan, I'm not sure if you've come up with a work around for the first note issue, but there is an actual solution. Go to File -> Project Settings -> MIDI -> 'Chase' Tab -> Make Sure 'Notes' is checked
Oh, it seems like the issue was fixed in the latest update. But anyway, for anyone reading, if you enable this setting it'll also play your MIDI notes in arrangement view no matter where you set your playhead - as in the playhead does not have to be at the start of the MIDI note for Logic to process it, youll get output even if the playhead is in the middle of the note
The First note issue - So I use fl studio and the same thing kind of happens. In that daw, it's an issue of actually ending that note before the next bar. If you DONT end that note before the next bar then it thinks that you're wanting to overdub that note and so it doesnt play it. (It could literally be 1 millisecond off) Since you dont end up playing anything it keeps the previous note instead of overdubbing and begins playing again on the next loop. Im just now getting into Logic so im not sure this is the answer but it definitely could be. hope this helps
That or he's starting the note a millisecond before the bar, and so it's being recognized at the end of the loop instead of the beginning. This is an issue in midi in general and not unique to loops. If you play a midi region even a millisecond after a note started the note doesn't play.
Thanks for the great video. As for the Apple defect on "the first note".; does the chase note feature in settings take care of this? Apple Chase settings in Logic Pro: "If you start playback in the middle of a project, some events might not be heard (such as notes, sustain pedal events, and pitch bend events that start before the point where playback begins). Using the Chase Events function, you can have Logic Pro analyze the project and include some or all of these events when the project plays back."
Didn't run into the first note not playing on my setup but I have Chase midi setup. That may be the issue? Check project settings>Midi>Chase Midi and tick notes and sustain.
Not sure if you've figure the issue of the 1 note yet but it could be cause is not quantized yet before it hits the next bar. Logic wont play a note on a region if it is slightly before the region. So a quick fix is to play it a hair late the first time cause that way it would be inside the region. In any case logic messed up on that one lol
I bumped into this a while back, was info i didnt need at the time, guess I do now. 1. Chase revere By default, Logic Pro X won’t play back a MIDI note unless the playback bar passes through the start of it, which can be annoying if you’ve set up a loop in the middle of your track containing notes that start prior to the loop start point. To fix this, go to File > Project Settings > MIDI and click Chase, then check the Notes checkboxes at the top and Chase on Cycle Jump at the bottom.
Live Loops is hands down the feature with the most potential for live, but just leaves me frustrated every time. Sometimes recording in a cell just starts that cell instead of all the cells on the column.. But still, I use it constantly. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for a good video! Following. You mentioned the problem with the pad not starting the first round due to logic not picking it up. I assume you / logic or someone already solved this, if not. could be regarding - Project settings - MIDI - Chase - and hooking off notes on top and almost at the bottom, so that even if you started playing slightly before the first beat, it would still pick it up?
Great video. Was wondering if you could fix the problem you described at approx 7:00 about sustaining a single note by just holding a sustain pedal over the transition? I'll have to give it a shot
Love your content. Question: I looked into your librairy and did not find anything about the launchpad, logic and controlling videos for live performances. Is that actually possible the same way it can be achieved with Ableton? Tks
Independently of live-looping, I find that when recording, my first midi note OFTEN gets placed before the recording starts, so when the cycle plays over again (just in everyday recording scenario), the first note does not get played!! I frequently have to go in and nudge the note manually so it lines up with the start of the cycle, which is annoying as all hell. Not sure if that's because I start playing too soon... but I never have the same problem in Reason.
What about the metronome??? Why does no one talk about this. Surely you’re not playing that metronome for everyone to hear at the beginning. How can I reroute it to headphones so just I can keep time?
Can you record two different sources into different cells at the same time? I‘m aiming to use this setup as a duo live and we want to record seperate parts of the loop simultaneously :)
It only doesn’t play the first note if it doesn’t start exactly on the first beat. It is ridiculously sensitive in that you can’t even be 1/128 early. I don’t know about loops in this view, but in the normal view you just have to turn the snap to grid on in the piano roll and drag the beginning of the note so it snaps to the bar.
@@NathanJamesLarsen I completely agree it should sort it out itself... I remember in the patch notes for 10.5 it had a line in about fixing the issue (or at least something that sounded like the same issue) but I still have to zoom fully in and make sure the note is starting right on, or very slightly after the beat.
Nathan Larsen Music I just found this (I’ve not tried it yet, but this may sort the problem out: 1. @@Superdelphinus Hey - appreciate the comment! I have tried chase and it did not work for me. I have chase selected a lot in projects and figured it'd work, but ... nope. Even if that was the thing to fix it - man, Logic needs a better way!
thanks for the video. i was a Logic user for a long time, (since logic 7) and i switched to Ableton because of looping and Win10 compatibility..as my MBPro died and i couldn’t afford a new one. i’ve been meaning to get back to Logic, but Ableton is very solid too, albeit different. i wanted to know if the Logic Loops feature was any good, and this video helped me do that. Since it is a new feature,,.it needs further work...but it is a start, no doubt. it won’t allow me to abandon Ableton though.. nor would i want to do that. But still, for my workflow and music style..Logic is still better for recording and mixing. As for live looping and Live scenarios,,,,Ableton is still king, imo,...so it is very likely for me to keep both DAWs, when i finally get around to purchase another a new Mac. thanks again for the video cheers from Portugal
Thank you so much for this video, Nathan, it’s very helpful! Regarding mapping out the tempo/time signature changes, I think it may be marginally less painful to do it in the List editor. You’d still need to know the exact measure where the change is to occur, but I feel like typing in the bar number and tempo value on your keyboard would be a bit less awkward than pulling around that blue line in the tempo track. Would you agree? Thanks again for the great tutorial!
very great tutorial. My question is is there a way to record the performance as its happening live? so that as you add each layer it is tracking on the normal DAW side of logic?
Hey Nathan! I play keys and have been trying making live loops on Logic with scratch.Loved to know the feature 'Cell length'. Gonna help me a lot. A couple of questions I have: 1. Can we assign laptop's keys to individual cells like we can do in Ableton in case we don't have a launchpad? 2. Did u resolve that first note issue thing? It really is a disappointment. I love this interface more than Ableton but this few glitches are frustrating
Would be so cool if you could set the global tempo on first loop..instead of playing to a metronome...unfortunately only Ableton has this feature in DAW form
I kinda almost want that controller, but I do not... I repeat... I do not have the performance skills to pull this kind of thing off on the fly, or in my production workflow (I actually think it'll slow down my workflow). Back to what we discussed about the controllers in your FB group, I don't know, maybe I'd be more confident creating compositions with that kind of setup, but now I'm just really looking at the NI Komplete Kontrol M32 because of its size. I also need knobs, lol.
Actually, maybe I do need something like this for drum pads/sequencing. I'm still disappointed in Novation for discontinuing Automap support, so booooooo to that.
Haha it just takes a bit of practice :) and I like having both options - Keys and drum pads. I'm a keyboard player primarily but I actually really like how the drum pads create a totally different creative "environment"
I have set up live loop scenes and trigger them with a midi foot pedal...programmed in the 'Controller Assignments' window...however the settings seem to get lost if I walk away and do not use logic for a while, and also if I save and close the project, ,the assignments are not saved the trigger cease working, and I have to re program them. Any ideas? 10.7.4
What’s been your luck with using logic’s stock plugins in zero latency mode? Do very many get disabled? Especially the limiter on the master output channel?
Hey man, I have the solution for the problem you indicated with the pad, in which the notes you recorded do not sound. You simply have to go to where it says to record, you press record settings, you go to midi, then to capture and press the buttons that indicate notes, sustain and then capture in cycle jumps. and that should be it, hope it works for you greetings from Argentina
I don't understand how to record the master audio output from start to finish when looping live and recording a video. Can anyone explain what you need for this? Like when you record yourself doing a live looping session you wanna film and record the whole process from start to finish. But you then need to have the audio file to put to your video. How do you do that in with Logic?? Pls can anyone help, maybe it's a stupid question but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere online 🙏🏼
You can - I don't think that's faster than mapping it out in the arrangement window. Also one of the other comments suggested mapping the tempo to a CC control and changing tempos that way.
Opened a warning each time , saying project is damaged , cause different songs would have different instruments midi environment mapping . Tempos were imported wrong , project alternative works if your tracks and environment remains the same . project alternatives can't juggle to separate projects , its infact easier to open two projects without closing them and then selct the one you are using .
Question for you regaring using loop in a live setting with a full band, is it possible to trigger a sample to only play once without having to tap it twice to make sure it doesn't loop? the idea is the loop doesn't necessarily need to be in time strictly just not having to double tap to dissable. trigger it for like and intro of a song while using a different keyboard ready for a cue or say just a small 1 bar hook that could just shut off after rather than looping over and over. without having to double tap the screen let me know pls
There’s one way to fix it you can add a audio synth pad track and then just let the audio synth pad play through the whole song that your looping that’s one thing that I do
Great explanation. Would it be possible to use this setup while outputting a click track for in-ears (e.g., drummer) and outputting the normal output (without click) for front of house? Cheers :)
I use UAD Apollo Twin. So I route the click/metronome through Logic bus 5-6 to the UAD console as a virtual track, and only send this track to my headphones.
Man, I am having some troubles using this to build up with loops. I want to record a cell, then that cell starts looping. While that cell is looping, arm another cell and starting recording when the first cell starts again. But, when I try to do this, the new cell I am recording with does not wait for the old cell to loop again, and it starts recording right away. Any ideas? I got Quantize Start on 4 bars and my cells have a length specified.
Very informative. Thanks. Is there anything else that could be used for live looping rather than what’s in Logic? Does anyone know what someone like Nils Frahm would use in his shows?
Impressive.......just the quality of work and skills you demonstrate in each video. I have a question, how does quantize effect the tempo in a 4 beat? Like if you go 1/16 to 1/2, does it affect a loop played in 4beats/sec? Could you maybe cover a bit on the theory that in your next video or just guide me how is Note vs beats vs tempo are different and are correlated?
So, if I understand you correctly - it's all related. So a 1/16 note dividing the bests into 16 equal parts that fit into it. As far as quantization - anything 1/16 or above would be fixed and then altered by the tempo. Make sense? If not just clarify the question
@@NathanJamesLarsen I think you got it right, and I am able to understand what you just said. It is just dividing into parts AND doesn't make the track play faster. So if there a clip which was on one full note, you quantize to 1/16 which means now we have 16 parts in one beat instead of one. Yes, I think clarifies my doubt if I understood it correctly. :P Thanks for clarifying the doubt, really appreciate it. I think for beginner its all in the basic level doubts, which may sound silly for a pro. :)
i am not sure this is the vid but i remembered you asked if is anythin you can do regarding loops not playing the first note. I found something on @echo sound works channel because i can t take credit for this and he was saying that when playing a note not from the start the logic will not play automatily. So the fix was settings/ midi / chassing / notes (active) i am not sure it this fix the problem but maybe it helps noob trying to help :)
Great tutorial on this. Any word on Apple developing their own controller for this? The Launchpad X is good workaround, but having to rotate it 90 degrees is not a great permanent solution. Any thoughts?
I'm having difficulty capturing the first recorded note which I believe is happening due to me playing it slightly early? Any tips on a way around this? Thanks for the vids btw
How do we record the whole performance? Like looping them one by one and triggering them however we want. How do we record that whole performance as separate tracks so that we can mix it later too?
Hey man! Sorry for being a bother lol. But it'll be amazing if you could do a detailed tutorial on how to use the Launchpad X with Live Loops, I just ordered one cause it seems to be the best controller to use with this new feature. And I know lots of people are doing the same but there's no good video out there explaining all the capabilities and amazing things you can do with it in Logic (there's one from Novation I think but it's a live stream and there's lots of lag and the image freezes all the time, and the guy clearly didn't know how to use Logic very well) just a thought maybe you're into it! I know it'll help a lot of us who are looking for the best way to perform live with this two things and maybe adding a keyboard to play more piano stuff, and this way accomplish just what Ableton users have been enjoying for years! Thanks so much!!
Hey! I can add that to the queue! Honestly the Novation has a bit of a steep learning curve. Took me a while to get comfortable but I can definitely add that to my list of videos to make.
+1 for the workflow example! Does anyone know of a way to automatically record enable and start recording other tracks/cells without having to toggle the carious commands?
Has anyone had an issue with recording audio straight into live loops? I'm new to live looping so I may be missing something obvious, but when I try to record audio (i.e. vocals) as a loop, the rest of the arrangement stops playing. If anyone knows why this would be the case please let me know!
Hey friends! Anyone have any tips on how to design an entire 60 min live set with Live Loops in logic? 10 songs, tempo changes, no awkward pauses, set has nice flow Multiple scenes per song… Any way to do this? And can the order of the set songs be switched later? People do this all the time in ableton but how on earth do we do this workflow of whole set in logic?? What do you guys think??
Great video, I'm trying to setup a launchpad mini mk3 to control live loops. The problem is it works great if you just use tracks 1-8 in Logic. As soon as you switch to track 9 (and above) the view on the launchpad shifts to tracks 9-16. So if you are using Live loops live for a flexible backing track as soon as you shift to track 9, to play a soft synth live, you loose the view of tracks 1-8 , which you need to control the backing track ?? There is a parameter in Control surface setup called "Track Lock" that sounds like it should fix this but it doesn't do anything. Any ideas on how to fix this from anyone? Thanks
Fantastic video, thanks so much for sharing the knowledge! I have one question. Can you record over a loop that you just recorded? I mean, maintain the previously recorded one but add to it. Like when you're adding a drum loop and you record kick and snare and then after you recorded that you want to add hihats into that same loop. I didn't find a way to do it. Thanks so much!
You can "merge" the cells - it's in the same settings I used to change things around - now, how that works functionally, id need to spend some time with it to figure that out exactly... I really wish they made it easier to do, but I know it's possible. I think you can set it so instead of "play" after the cell length it "record"s again for another round. This is all still such a new feature I think this one video is definitely not comprehensive by any means. All in all "Apple if you're reading this please make this easier!"
@@NathanJamesLarsen totally, I guess we'll figure it out as we go. And if we let Apple know this issues they'll fix or add whatever in the new updates like they did in 10.5.1 with some bugs. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond!
Don’t know if this is helpful but one ‘trick’ you can do with drummer tracks in logic is convert them to midi sequences. Sometimes I’ll have two tracks for drummer - one the straight up drummer track, and then a mirror of it underneath with the same kit, style etc in midi form. Then you can add whatever you want to the groove on the separate track much more specifically than you can otherwise. Annoyingly, you can’t convert to midi, make changes and then convert back to a drummer track (it loses all the changes), unless I’ve got something set wrong. Then you just have it all on a summing stack and do your compression etc on that so it all sounds like it’s from the same kit.
Whenever I change the at Rec-End to Play, it always resets back to Record at the end of a take instead, literally as soon as I go to record something into another cell. WHYYYYY??!!!!
Hey !
Little late but still : for the "first note" problem, it's actually Logic that won't play a midi note except if it runs since the beginning of it.
But you can go to File>Project Settings>Midi>Chase and enables "Notes"'
Then your midi notes will sound even if you hit Play in the middle of it :)
perfect man!
What ever you need. Logic does it. Glass of wine..... Logic does it
I owe you a beer or beverage or of your preference.
Problem is, you gotta do it on every project, can't set it as standard for new projects as far as I know?

Hey man, I’m running my live set through here. What I’m not doing is trying to record and build live. Ive got my mastered stems that I’m dropping into cells and it has a super fun vibe. Breaking it down by drums bass guitar blah blah, and hh snare kick etc. it’s been super reliable, I play live guitar parts and have my midi set up with Keyscape on a separate computer.
Great video! An easier way to change the tempo may be to map it to midi controller knob or slider with “Learn Assignment”. This allows the you to change the tempo live, so you don’t have to plan everything in advance.
Ahhhh yes! Such a great comment. Wonderful idea. Love this. Thanks.
This is awesome! I was literally googling it and getting frustrated. Thank you so much for sharing!

Now performing a single track is not at all difficult , But what happens if i want to create an entire set of 10 songs to be played live
1- all the songs have different tempos and instruments and some midi tracks and some audio tracks , How does one create a single project to do so .
I have tried many options
1- putting different tempos in the arrangement view
2- putting different tempos in cells
3- even tried making separate project alternatives
The idea was to simply create one workflow where there are no audible pauses during the entire 45 minutes of performance .
For tempo changes, create markers for the tempos you want and then assign a keyboard/controller command to go to the marker you want.
Could jumping to the next marker be triggered by a midi parameter set in a midi live loop? Depending on your live set you might not have the time to make the jump manually at the exact moment.
@@auraaudio673 how about just opening a new project saved at that bpm?
I am trying to design a whole 60 min set with Live Loops + playing guitar and singing
Is this possible? What sort of workflow do you recommend with Live Loops for whole set with tempo changes and multiple scenes per song
People do this all the time in ableton
How do we do it in logic?
It took me a while to get used to that though.
thank you for being genuine. I've watched a few of your videos and they are very to the point and informative. we need more youtubers like you
Wow thank you so much you killed it . everything is ready to play live now 🤒😭😍😍
Thanks for this! Unlocking the loop feature by setting up the cell timing was clutch …. Not a lot out there on that! Game changer! Thanks!
Thank you for the explanation :) It is not a bug to skip a first note: Logic sends a note-on message on the first beat but you let go of the key, sending a note-off message.
Here we go again. Nathan Larsen doing one of the finest tutorials. Thanks!
That's awesome! Haha thank you! 🙏
been on Logic since version 6, just started using live loops... I love it! auditioning a few different basslines or leads etc.. awesome.
You are my hero. Because of your video, I was finally able to manage that. Even though I don't have a launchpad, the iPad trick works wonders :) Thank you! Now I don't have to buy Ableton as well.
What I did with the time signature is that I have a cycle section of two compases and the cycle section is moved through markers in the timeline with a midi command in my FCB1010.
thank god this video exists!!! Supreme work mate!🙏
Hey Nathan, first off thanks this helped!.. also, to fix the midi issue its a setting.. click option p (alt p) to open project settings.. click midi, click chase, click to enable 'notes' then make sure to tick 'sustained'.. that should fix it
Already tried that 😉
This is perfect thank you!
Great tutorial! But I think what we really need is an overview of your coffee station in the background 👀👀
Go to preference and select midi and select chase midi on.
Thank you man
@9:04 Michaela is heading home! / i really hope Cubase will some day have that Live-Loop-Segment too! Can't afford to buy a MAC for this right now :D
Before they fixed the issue I had tried enabling Chase and it didn't work unfortunately but I'm glad they fixed the problem in their latest update!
@@NathanJamesLarsen Oops! I'm sorry for the misinformation!
No worries! There were others who suggested it, too. I honestly really thought it'd work but it didn't.
The First note issue -
So I use fl studio and the same thing kind of happens. Im just now getting into Logic so im not sure this is the answer but it definitely could be. hope this helps
same in logic
That or he's starting the note a millisecond before the bar, and so it's being recognized at the end of the loop instead of the beginning. This is an issue in midi in general and not unique to loops. If you play a midi region even a millisecond after a note started the note doesn't play.
@@ZackPennington yeah. Exactly. It could go either way.
Don't worry my friend ... Michaela is heading home;-)
Thank's for the Video!!
Baha! Love it. Thanks bro
Thank you for this tutorial !! so helpful for a beginner!
I bumped into this a while back, was info i didnt need at the time, guess I do now.
1. Chase revere
By default, Logic Pro X won’t play back a MIDI note unless the playback bar passes through the start of it, which can be annoying if you’ve set up a loop in the middle of your track containing notes that start prior to the loop start point. To fix this, go to File > Project Settings > MIDI and click Chase, then check the Notes checkboxes at the top and Chase on Cycle Jump at the bottom.
Just as faast as i said it, it doesnt work:) Was able to check real quick.
Yeah I was gonna say I had already given that a shot initially since I usually DO have chase on but it still didn't change anything unfortunately.
@@NathanJamesLarsen Guess we're waiting for a fix in 10.5.1 or whichever version we're on.
Nice great job ! Now we need a dedicated controller from Logic/Apple !
Tks
Very useful video! Thanks a lot! Thanks from Russia!
Not sure if that's because I start playing too soon... but I never have the same problem in Reason.
would MIDI chase in Project Settings help?
Omg I have the same problem and idk how to fix it

What about the metronome??? Why does no one talk about this. Surely you’re not playing that metronome for everyone to hear at the beginning. How can I reroute it to headphones so just I can keep time?
Yeah I noticed this with the first note drop off couldn't work out how to sort that out. Thanks for the video 🎥
For mine, even if I play extremely accurately it still drops the first note - and even if I didn't, Logic should figure that out and fix it
@@NathanJamesLarsen I completely agree it should sort it out itself...
Chase revere

Nathan Larsen Music yeah I tried as well, and it was already turned on 😕. Back to the drawing board!
The problem at 7:25 is because the midi note appears before the first beat I believe. Open the pianoroll og quantize it to start at beat 1
Nope - tried all of those - but Logic appears to have fixed the issue in an update
@@NathanJamesLarsen ah, nice!
thanks for the video.
i was a Logic user for a long time, (since logic 7) and i switched to Ableton because of looping and Win10 compatibility..as my MBPro died and i couldn’t afford a new one.
i’ve been meaning to get back to Logic, but Ableton is very solid too, albeit different.
i wanted to know if the Logic Loops feature was any good, and this video helped me do that.
Since it is a new feature,,.it needs further work...but it is a start, no doubt.
it won’t allow me to abandon Ableton though.. nor would i want to do that.
But still, for my workflow and music style..Logic is still better for recording and mixing.
As for live looping and Live scenarios,,,,Ableton is still king, imo,...so it is very likely for me to keep both DAWs, when i finally get around to purchase another a new Mac.
thanks again for the video

There is a setting for starting and playing a midi mid note, I saw it in another tutorial but its there. Hopefully that would fix your problem
Best video down here!! Thank you!!! 🥁
Thanks so much! Appreciate that a ton 🙏
have u tried to check midi chase on to fix the note not playing?
You have to do what you did with the first cell for all the others
Did you find out? I am also searching
hey, can we make loops without pre-defining the tempo/bar length? like a real pedal where you can start your first loop intuitively? thanks !!
Hey Nathan! I play keys and have been trying making live loops on Logic with scratch.Loved to know the feature 'Cell length'. Gonna help me a lot.
A couple of questions I have:
Any ideas? 10.7.4
Nice live performance. Only problem was that we could hear the click. How would you avoid that?
You would wanna change the output of the click same as if you were using a click in a live show.
Does the original launchpad pro work with live loops I can get 1 cheap it's the 1 with the round buttons on the outside edges. Cheers
What’s been your luck with using logic’s stock plugins in zero latency mode? Do very many get disabled? Especially the limiter on the master output channel?
Hey man, I have the solution for the problem you indicated with the pad, in which the notes you recorded do not sound. You simply have to go to where it says to record, you press record settings, you go to midi, then to capture and press the buttons that indicate notes, sustain and then capture in cycle jumps.
and that should be it, hope it works for you
greetings from Argentina
Can someone confirm that this solution works?
Thank you. Is absolutely great!!!
You can use project alternatives to configure for different songs. Loading an alternative is really fast.
@@NathanJamesLarsen nah some of the instruments recorded live don't playout right with just tempo changes , midi will but not the audio files.
Question for you regaring using loop in a live setting with a full band, is it possible to trigger a sample to only play once without having to tap it twice to make sure it doesn't loop?
the idea is the loop doesn't necessarily need to be in time strictly just not having to double tap to dissable. trigger it for like and intro of a song while using a different keyboard ready for a cue or say just a small 1 bar hook that could just shut off after rather than looping over and over.
without having to double tap the screen
let me know pls
Hey Select the cell and hit 'L" then it won't loop it'll play just once
There’s one way to fix it you can add a audio synth pad track and then just let the audio synth pad play through the whole song that your looping that’s one thing that I do
great video! thanks for the info. How do you record the whole live performance within logic so I can bounce it later?
The important stuff is shown at 4:29.
Awesome! Glad to hear that. Naw- we all start from some where!
i am not sure this is the vid but i remembered you asked if is anythin you can do regarding loops not playing the first note.
I found something on @echo sound works channel because i can t take credit for this and he was saying that when playing a note not from the start the logic will not play automatily.
So the fix was settings/ midi / chassing / notes (active)
i am not sure it this fix the problem but maybe it helps

How do we record the whole performance? Like looping them one by one and triggering them however we want. How do we record that whole performance as separate tracks so that we can mix it later too?
So in your opinion, would you say at this stage, Ableton Live is perhaps the better option for use of loops in a Live Performance setting?
I've not used Ableton but from what I gather it's the better option for live for sure

Sure thing! Yeah let's hope so. I'm pretty confident it'll get better over time.
