I wonder what it was like to live in the buildings overlooking the airport, with all those 747's flying so close. I'm sure it was loud, but probably scary too. How could anyone get used to that?
The only building restriction the Chinese government put on the Kowloon Walled City was to limit it to 14 stories because planes were nearly hitting it. People on the rooftops could easily chuck a baseball and hit a plane. Kai Tak got a rep as the hardest airport to land at while the slum was still there.

Great video I feel like I'm on holiday. I will support this you tube channel in due course. I just want more videos depicting real events as accurate as possible. The more we support the more flexibility this channel has. Chapeau!
Nice dramatic approach, Alec, I like it ! Going into San Diego Lindbergh Field isn't quite as, but almost. The glide slope is very steep, with plane only clearing nearby multi-story parking garage by 100', just @ the I-5 freeway. Very impressive from a window seat ! Also if driving S on I-5 when plane is just passing over, you are so close you can clearly read warning decals on Aircraft belly ! Its surreal to see an object as large as an Airliner so low overhead, at a low landing speed, it feels ready to drop down on you. Probably not too many airports worldwide allow such a unique perspective. Lived there 40 years & never heard of any incidents due to that.
Perfect song choice! I kept looking for the Kowloon Walled City until I saw this model was 2004. Supposedly it made Kai Tak terrible to land at in the early 90's. Do you know if there were any stories of near-misses with the rooftops?
today again 2021 old hongkong kaitak airport is still alive at home cause im still playing FS 2004 and FS 2020 and as this video traffic everyhere in hongkong kaitak chep lap kok and macao and china airports with the must of beautiful sceneries makes HONGKONG CITY a place so magical day or night and very animated as 80 90's
You are wrong. That 767's registration is OE-LAU. The plane that crashed in Thailand is OE-LAV. The 1991 crash didnt also wear that livery. That "Service is our success" seal was only in the engines. Not in the fuselage before.
Most likely FS Recorder. Also the scenery he used is the FlyTampa Kai Tak scenery, which includes static planes, that’s why there is tons of planes in the ground.
Me. But my mom had been to Hong Kong like 5 times during her work abroad before I was born, she got lucky to see Kai Tak a few times in her trips. But the 6th time she visited Hong Kong, her flight landed at Chek Lap Kok, no longer at Kai Tak anymore.
Yes. After it was pulled out of the water, they parked it right next to the HAECO Maintenance hangar as a training rig for airport firefighters before being scrapped in the mid 90s.
Fantastic video, very well made and the music was the icing on the cake! Thank you so very much!
Alec, this is the finest video that I have viewed in 2018. The quality is so spot-on I thought that I was actually there.
