    OMG thank you so much.
We have struggled with this seat for ages until it totally wouldn't work.
This was very easy and it took longer to access than to fix.
We found this video after messing around with it for an hour. Hubby was so frustrated.
    You saved my marriage. 👍🏻😃

Actually the factory setting is on the 3rd groove position, the groove closest to the hook end. So when you move it to groove 2, or 1, it pulls the whole cable casing back, and therefore in essence, shortens the cable. Not physically shortens, but effectively shortens. Likely if it was in 3, it'll not go into groove 1 until it's stretched after being in groove 2 a long time.
If it is stretched so much it's already in groove 1, usually it's broke by now, but I have beat that metal mount down with a hammer and it'll last until it breaks. Once broke, I wouldn't fix them as it's a big hassle to tear the seat apart. I did it once.
I've repaired probably 25 seats or more on sedonas and carnivals when I was a private mechanic.

Thanks for the helpful video. I was able to remove the stuck middle seat from my 2014 Kia Carnival armed with the information you provided. Unfortunately, my cable was already in the third groove, so I could only manually release the cable as someone else suggested using a screwdriver as a lever on the mechanism. They should have provided 4 grooves! When will people learn!

Thanks I was able to finally fix mine in the 2007 Sedona. I think my cable was already stretched and moved to the other notch but I was able to get it to fold when I had the back to a 45°angle then it clicked to activate the lower mechanism. I also sprayed lubricant on the mechanism which hadn't been used in about five years.😂 thanks

... and if your cable is stretched too much, here is an alternative (not as elegant, but allows you to remove the seat relatively easily). Slide the seat forward on the seat rail, exposing the rear of the rail behind the seat. Locate the seat release cable (which is the other end of the cable shown in the video) which leads you to the unlocking pin. Use a screwdriver or other solid rod to push the pin forward, unlocking the rear seat anchor (probably have to do it for each side). The seat should now be able to tip up (once both rear anchors unlocked). With the seat tipped slightly forward (so you don't accidentally relock the rear anchor), slide the seat back along the rail, and then release the front seat anchors in the normal fashion (handle on axle under the seat).

Thanks for this clear and simple tip! I’m having problem with second row seat of 2016 Kia Sedona which latches on only one corner - I can feel a small rod under the seat (from the back of the seat base) directly above the non-opening latch (the corner that won’t hook into floor) - if I manually push it up the latch opens, I can push seat back into place and both corners are secure (the release strap works fine) - anyone have this problem? Is it going to take a trip to dealer to fix? No loose spring part has been found on the floor. I have not taken seat apart. Thx!

The hook that latches onto the spring mechanism had chipped off hence why my chair could no longer fold upwards. Most def wear and tear BUT I assumed that hook was solid as hell 🤦🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️ most likely have to use the pliers to pull the cable when I go to collapse the seat upwards

I have a first gen 2012 Kia Sedona. My issue is the opposite. The third row seat won't lock. The latch is stuck in. the unlock position. The seat will go in an upright position, but the latch won't lock on the bottom where the metal bars are. So if you are sitting on the seat, you can fall backward. Is it the same fix??????

Yeah - that is - until the crappy cables stretch even further
These stretchy cables are a well know defect on these seats
      There are basically 2 hacks..
1 - Is to play with the seat back in the “hope” that the green dot disappears; allowing you to remove the seat..
      Good luck!
2 - If - and that’s a big if - you can get the seat out - then removing the plastic trim pieces and readjusting the cable to the next notch - or the tie wrap trick; slightly shortening the cable
But these hacks will only last so long; as the cable is wholly unreliable
Then - you have 2 options for the Second Row
Insert a decent size flat blade screw driver into the hole where the "Green Dot" and push the so called "green dot" - which is really a green mark on the end of a large pin which the cable is attached to
Bear in mind - you will probably ding or mar the area around the hole as it sometimes takes a few tries to slide it forward
Or - in the case of the 3rd row
It is much more difficult to get to
You need to remove the philips head screws holding the plastic trim pieces on the back of the seat - and by brute force - pull on the plastic trim pieces so that you can insert a large heavy flat bladed screw driver and press the same "pin" that has the green dot
And you need to do this on both sides
It's not fun and not easy
Me.....After I finally removed the seats - I removed the plastic trim pieces so that not if, but when it happens again - I have easy access to the mechanism.
      Pretty?
      Not really
But much easier than spending a morning removing, prying, cursing etc
Now - owing to the fact that this is such a poorly designing system, without any measure of a manual override…here is a better hack
On the tailgate side of the lower plastic trim pieces…
Using a hole saw with a very slightly extended drill bit (not a paddle bit!) - drill a ½” hole allowing access for a screwdriver or a longish open ended 3/8” wrench to allow you to gently push the pin that has the green dot forward
You need to do this for BOTH SIDES of each seat
I can not see how replacing the cables on 4 seats is worthwhile, as you know it will just reappear in the future.
I simply modified the lower plastic trim pieces to allow my little tool to enter and manually override the pin, pushing it to the unlocked position, and ignore the rest of the stuff.
Since I know it will happen regularly
      For what its worth!

The cable was on its last notch so the lever can be released with a screwdriver as leverage, release the seat back and it will come out.
