But if I'm being honest I think one of the reason the movie suffers so much is because it's Appletv exclusive and who the hell uses appletv?! Come on! This should've been on netflix, then it would've gotten more attention
With all the effort put into it, Wolfwalkers definitely deserves some better attention. Plus the studio should get some more money for such an amazing film. Anyway, bigger fandoms usually make more fanwork, and I would love to see some good fanart and fanfiction.
I've always loved this movie since I saw the trailer on my TV. I was mesmerised, it was like love at first sight, the artsyle voice acting, plot, characters, you name it. I mostly loved how it portrayed wolves as harmless animals who don't mean to hurt humans and it makes me happy knowing that there are people out there who do believe that wolves aren't completely heartless animals. I honestly feel like Cartoon Saloon and its masterpieces are so, so underrated and deserve more audience and attention.
One little thing I wish you mentioned about this movie: I loved how the gradually darker tone was shown not only through the events happening, but through using unique tricks, such as the movie using darker and harsher colour palettes, and turned from using sweeps for transitions that a normal kiddie movie would use into match cuts. The movie is working towards having you immersed over time.
Putting aside this being a favorite of mine, I think it's objectively one of the best feature-length animations ever and many of the reasons for that are brought up in your video. Fingers crossed this movie being a prisoner to a comparatively niche streaming service and a multi-film boxset (though it is a lovely boxset) won't prevent it from getting the recognition it deserves, especially when 2D, hand drawn movies have become such a rarity.
I've been having a bit of a Ghibli/anime movie phase recently. It started when I watched Belle in theaters a while ago and I just loved it. It was the first anime film and surprisingly the first hand drawn film I ever saw in theaters. In a world where almost every major Hollywood animation studios strive for realistic CGI animation and to be as marketable as possible, it was very refreshing to sit down and just watch a simple good animated film. Then I realized that a lot of Japanese animated films get distributed by GKIDS along with other international films. I saw Wolf Walkers as one of their more popular films in their catalogue. It looks adorable, I might see wolf walkers soon if I can. Now I realize that we don't need to be stuck with cheap Hollywood CGI films when there are other parts of the world that will continue to make and embrace beautiful hand drawn films. Along with making a unique art style over realistic CGI.
This video is amazing, I love how you went in detail to analyze little things that juxtapose the city from the forest or how the historical influence makes this feel like such a real and captivating experience. Also, maybe this is just me, but I think the animation of your sprite has improved? It was particularly noticeable in the beginning, so great job on that front!
i'm so glad you noticed the animation i did for the beginning, it's my first ever real animation that's not just a boiling line animatic! It took me ages but i was super proud of it when it was done c':
I really loved this film when I first saw it, but your intelligent, well-research, and thoughtful analysis has only given me even more of an appreciation and fascination towards it, and an urge to go revisit it. Amazing job, Tom.
I absolutely love this film. It’s all beautiful, but I especially enjoy looking at the forest, it’s so visually appealing and fits in so well with their design.
I finally found the time to watch the Video and it made me want to watch Wolfwalkers and the whole Irish Folklore Series even more 10/10 will recommend this Video to my friends
I’ve known about wolfwalkers ever since it came out, and I saw a couple trailers of it, but for some reason 3/4 YEAR YOUNGER ME FORGOT ABOUT THEM AND NEVER WATCHED IT, AND I KEPT IGNORING IT, AND SAW CLIPS OF THE MOVIE, AND KEPT IGNORING IT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ME- until last week where I saw another clip of it and finally thought, “Oh I wanna watch this now!” So I finally found out it streamed on Apple TV, so I watched it, and it’s now my favorite movie of all time, as a therian I love it and wish wolfwalkers existed-
Oh my god. One of my favourite video essay TH-camrs posted an amazing in-depth video essay on one of my favourite movies of all time??? Is it my birthday or something???? This is amazing! Oh, I’m so excited to watch this.
I talked about this film briefly on my channel, But I agree. This film is a beautiful masterpiece and I really wanna go in depth about this film. Great video by the way :) love your channel
I’m so glad some people actually talked about wolf walkers. Heck, I’M ASKING THE SAME QUESTION WHY ISN’T WOLFWALKERS, SONG OF THE SEA, SECRET OF KELLS OR BREADWINNERS TALKED ABOUT??? THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL TEARFUL MOVIES!! I also love this review and how you explained things so simple yet crystal clear. Cartoon Saloon, in my very biased opinions, is one of the best 2D movies out there. *i also deeply appreciate the small sprinkles of comedic things here and there to keep this entertaining and not just some plain, stale review.*
Speaking as someone who is fixated much more on character writing and audio and rarely ever thinks about visual design, Wolfwalkers kind of changed me. I never saw a film use visuals to so perfectly encapsulate its characters and setting and atmosphere. The first film to ever have this affect on me was The Secret of Kells, and then I never saw anything like that again until Wolfwalkers. The stark contrast with how they draw the cold and rigid city, the painfully oppressive and lifeless castle, vs the forest which is soft and vibrant and warm and alive. It's given me a deeper appreciation for how good art can be at helping tell a story. It absolutely blew me away, and I cried multiple times when I first saw it, for a number of reasons. It's by far the most phenomenal looking movie I've ever seen, and it's hard to imagine how Cartoon Saloon can possibly top this. But I look forward to whatever they're doing next. :V
17:14 Additional note about Cromwell- he fought in a bloody civil war in England to overthrow the monarchy to replace it with parliament, before taking over parliament and basically becoming a monarch himself. He was later replaced by the monarchy coming back with popular support because he was just that bad.
I remember reading the graphic novel a couple of years ago, but I never knew the people who made THE Secret of Kells, I watched it so much and fell in love w/ secret of kells, made a movie of wolfwalkers, thanks for the suggestion since I really liked the book aswell :D
It's mostly the US mainstream that have given up on classic animation styles. Beside Japan, offcourse, Europeans like the French and Brits are still going strong.
This whole studio made me fall in love with Celtic folklore, and the slight ecological cultural undertones are beautiful and expressed perfectly with it's art, the forest is made to look so mystical in comparison to the growing British invaders
My mom actually watched the secret of kells! One day me, my sibling, and friend, let's call her Jolene, we're looking for a movie to watch. Then we stumbled upon "song of the sea." And we loved it! I guess it's my first cartoon saloon movie. My second was the bread winner.
I was lucky enough to see this (and song of the sea, my personal fav) in the cinema. Great film. Theres something really tragic to me about how irelands landscape has been affected by colonisation. Needless to say, ultimately Cromwell ultimately succeeded in causing the wolf population to go extinct. Only tiny pockets of native woodland remain, much less than in england and Scotland, despite how the island was once almost completely covered, replaced with farmland and artificial forests of imported species grown for lumber. What's been lost will never be recovered.
I'm gonna be transparent with you The book of kells, song of the sea and Wolfwalkers were basically staples of my Childhood besides the iron giant and how to drain your dragon and other such emotional masterpieces from years past They composed the entirety of my childhood from crashbox to loonie tunes It all comes flooding back now. And oh boy, do they bring me to tears? Because they were so good. Both de story and animations and the music and the characters. They all brought the movies to lights. Vaccine, especially the emotional ones. Cause it's movies that speak to your heart and deepest desires that literally make you tear up and cry whilst you're watching it. There are good ones. The ones that have good animations. Good stories, good songs, good characters. Good voice, acting everything's great about it. And then it has to have a emotional centerpiece that speaks the viewer and makes them bring out their inner self. When the movie's mentioned, let alone watched either it be for the first time or for a rekindling of the nostalgic memories, emotional movies with good aspect. Can make a person's life better or worse. Sometimes it can cause depression and other times it can make you cry out of sheer joy. It's movies like these that we miss in modern days. Cause they're swelled up and consumed by corporate corporations. That just want to make political allegorit's just to make a few quick dimes out of some brainless child. And move on.
Wolfwalkers is a great improvement from Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea. I like how slowly the portrayal of their story becomes more easily digestible for the audience who aren't well versed in Irish folklore and history. Plus ultra baby.
Great analysis of the film, I definitely appreciate your comprehension of the artistic style. I adore this film and Cartoon Saloon, I hope they continue to thrive and stay humble.
I'm actually working on a different video with a friend of mine parallel to this one where we talk about that sequence! Seeing James Baxter's name attached to this project was a pleasant surprise when I found out, he's one of the all-time greats. To be honest, ALL the character animators who worked on this film did an absolutely s-tier job
That’s actually how I first found out about Wolfwalkers. I really like Running with the Wolves and I was just listening to my music playlist on TH-cam and the scene with it appeared. I thought it looked great, found out it was from a film and decided I really had to watch it.
I've wanted to see this for a while, but I don't know where to find it. I'll just have to go searching again. It looks absolutely gorgeous. And as a fan of many types of mythology, this is simply a must watch. So I'm not gonna watch your whole video right now. For once, I want to experience this one without spoilers.
I did my best to make the video spoiler free! I talk about visuals and themes but I don't disclose any major plot details, if that's what you're worried about as for how you can watch the movie, you can do a free trial with Apple TV+ and watch it that way. Alternatively, you can get a hard copy with the Irish Folklore Trilogy Box Set, which is what I did because I love all three of their Irish Folklore movies
And if you could belive that Song of the sea, Secret of Kells and The Prophet (isn't made by Cartoon Saloon, but Tomm Moore is the director) were my favorite 2d animated movies and I didn't knew there were by the same people. And I wouldn't have discovered them if in one friday evening I was so bored that I started searching random 2020 film, saw the poster and instantly felt that I have to check it out, that it won't dissapoint me at all, and it didn't
More on the differences between the city and the forest: the city is done in linocut style while the forest is more softer watercolors, LOVE the attention to detail in this movie 😍
A year ago I watched Wolf walkers with all my family, we loved it. And we finished it with tears, even my dad, and that's a lot to say. Highly recommend it too!
Your animation in this is buttery smooth. It's so great to know that you're getting comfortable enough to have a wide range of topics hosted on the channel and it's hard to imagine you could ever paint yourself into a corner
Haven't even watched the vid yet but I know it'll be great! So glad you recommended wolfwalkers in the discord because it's an absolutely breathtaking film.
This movie was such a great experience. It was visually stunning from beginning to end, the animation (particularly for the wolves) was so satisfying, the storytelling had me hooked, so much more heart than I expected and I love its incorporation of actual historic facts.
I saw this a week ago and was just planning on making a video on it, but this video really covers everything I wanted to talk about perfectly. Also, the animation in the beginning looks really good!
I remember being so excited for this film ever since I saw the trailer. As a 2D animator, I'm always incredibly excited and relieved to see an artform I love so much elevated to such a degree, that it's on par with 3D animation and even exceeding their standards. 2D has been used more and more in recent years thanks to the success of Spiderverse and hybrid animation has steadily become quite the new norm. Not that I dislike it! I really think it serves both mediums well. I do wish there were more 2D films being made, because it's such a beautiful art form. Cartoon Saloon has all my respect, on par with Studio Ghibli. I feel that Disney's monopoly over the entertainment sector is criminal, not just literally, because it is anti-competitive, but because I feel like it's stifling new voices, and like you said about Disney's ethics, I can't really trust them anymore. As much as Illumination, Blue Sky (RIP), Dreamworks and even Pixar have had hits and misses in their lineup, they've always felt quite a bit more ambitious, or at least more willing to push the envelope. With the misses, we've gotten some pretty great hits, like HTTYD, KFP, Nimona, Luca, and (as shallow as I found the story) the animation in the Mario Movie was pretty well done. We really need more small studios, and - if possible - big studios not under Disney's umbrella. They're unique storytelling is always obvious from the word 'go' compared to Disney's 'tried and true' methods. Really great video, loved the insights and review and as always love the topic! For some reason, you dropped out of my feed even though I had notifs on! Thankfully I remembered the channel name and could look you up and now I've got a backlog of vids to watch :P
AAAH this is such an amazing video!! Thank you for introducing me to this movie and for so brilliantly laying out what makes it so amazing! 🐺🐺 (also I'm so proud of you, it's clear how much hard work went into this video and it turned out so so good!!)
I remember growing up watching song of the sea! It was my favorite movie for a long time and I didn't even know that the creators of it were the same ones who made wolf walkers and the bread winner (wich are a couple of my favorite movies currently) I really love the studio and it's works! (Sorry if I made any mistakes, English isn't my first language )
your English is great and I understand you completely! c: Song of the Sea is also a favourite of mine. It was a birthday gift, and I watched it the day after said birthday. I was transfixed, and felt MANY EMOTIONS
Well, you leave me no choice, I'll have to watch Wolfwalkers now. Great job Tom, love your essay! Edit: HOLY SHIT! That IS Sean Bean as Robyns father! He's my favourite actor!
Personally a fan of characters that are 75% hair I gotta say I totally agree a wild hair style is good at visually representing the wild and free spirited nature of a character though the art style has to be done right so as not to make unpractibley long wild hair get in said characters way such as in movement and Wolfwalkers and the owl house are pretty damn good at doing just that.
It’s nice to know the Irish are such South Park fans. Jokes aside, awesome video! I haven’t heard of this studio before, and I thank you for the introduction 😸
Just watching this now and it's so cool seeing Irish art be appreciated! Love the points that you made and the amount of work you put into research :) Re Cromwell being a "very serious Villain for a kids film" - it's tame enough by irish standards, it doesnt go into much detail of the horrid shit he did 😅 All through primary school we were taught in history about the terrible way Britain treated Ireland, e.g. I remember seeing a picture of pitch-capping (form of torture used on irish rebels in the 1790s rebellion) when I was about 10 or so in our history book in class, as well as pics of emaciated corpses etc from the famine when younger than that. I remember playing along the stone wall of a local mass grave from the 1790s rebellion too. The truth of the horrors were never hidden from us and there was an emphasis on remembering our centuries-long oppression and struggles for independence, but it didn't bother us for the most part because we knew it was in the past, we were safe, and we were in the end victorious. It mainly felt like giving gratitude to the people of the past for what we have now and celebrating our culture and resilience. I'd be interested to see how the curriculum has changed tbh if at all, we were the first generation growing up after the Good Friday Agreement and I know that's made a MASSIVE difference in how we view Britain etc. in comparison to previous gens.
you're so right though, when I was in school in England they basically peddled it like "Cromwell was a flawed but ultimately great man" but then I got older and learned about the depths of what he did and was like "hang on a minute this guy was an actual monster"
@@CurmudgeonMediaat the time and for a good time after he was seen as an equivalent to Satan, and there were sayings like "the curse of Cromwell on you!" When I moved to Britain a few years ago it SHOCKED me how much he's celebrated here and how little people actually know about him. Statements of regret for the troubles, the historic treatment of Ireland etc from the British government ring a bit hollow when there's a statue celebrating Cromwell attached to the parliament building 🤦 I actually specifically decided not to apply to rent a place that would have been ideal for my partner and I, cause it was on "Cromwell Road" and we could never get family to visit us with an address like that 😂 the shame would be unbearable! The fact they essentially kill him in the film was so cathartic but also made me laugh case nope 😂 one of the many resistance losses Ireland had against Britain 😭
@@CurmudgeonMedia one thing I always am confused by - what did Cromwell do that was supposedly great? 😭 people are like "he abolished the monarchy!" But 1. Not permenantly at all, 2. The same people who love Cromwell love the queen etc?? Idgi
I was so dissapointed that the studio lost at the Oscars, again, ok fine Soul was an excelent movie aldough I enjoyed Wolfwalkers much much more. In the case of Secret of Kells is understandable, it was their first movie the buget was preatty low, Up was a very emotional film. Let's say that was the case for The Breadwinner, it was a preatty harsh film telling a story that not all people are disposed to hear, plus Coco was amazing, I peronally liked them equaly. But with Song of the Sea they have no excuse, that movie is almost flawless, and it still lost. I'll never forgive them for that. I wonder how many more masterpieces do Cartoon Saloon have to make untill they get the apreciation they rightfully deserve
Agreed! If you ever read the Oscar's voters talking about animation, many of them clearly don't know much about the medium or even care. Wolfwalkers was a significantly more interesting film than Soul. I really WANTED to like Soul, but the writing was just so contrived. I'd recommend watching YMS's review of Soul for more insight on that front. But I'd LOVE to see Cartoon Saloon win an Oscar in the future, if only for the sheer cultural capital
@@CurmudgeonMedia My problem with Soul personally is that it can be very slow in patches, and not in a good way. Not in the “intimate” slow (like the scene where Joe finds his spark), but the “boring” slow (like the stuff in the hospital). It doesn’t have the conciseness of Wolfwalkers that it needs. Where Wolfwalkers communicates the history of its setting and power system through visuals and quick dialogue, Soul opts for heavy info dumps.
In our family, the name "Oliver Cromwell" hits with almost as much venom as certain modern day monsters, though I'd be doing modern history a disservice if I compared him to THE german monster.. He really was the early an early prototype for a fascist though. A combination of proto-nationalism, racial superiority and profound hatred of the catholics, with a total of about 600,000 souls blood on his hand. Kinda feels familiar doesn't it. The only reason I dont compare him to the german monster fully is I dont *think* he was intending to fully genocide the irish. That kind of totallity is a whole new horror all of its own.
I adore this movie and I’m so happy someone else knows how good it is! Man did it hit me in the feels with the themes of environmentalism and colonialism… I’ve watched it twice or so but keep wanting to go back to it and like you said, it’s so underrated and not available on enough platforms. Nice analysis and loved the enthusiasm😂😊 Let’s spread the word on Wolfwalkers! ❤
I absolutely adored Wolfwalkers. It was such a legendary experience from start to finish. I hope if Cartoon Saloon gets more recognition Wolfwalkers will be talked about like crazy. I think Wolfwalkers is now my second favourite movie of all time next to How To Train Your Dragon 2. Also what was the song you played from 3:13 to 3:30 ? It sounded amazing.
I totally agree. It's such a comprehensive experience, and I look forward to whatever the future holds for the studio! As for the song, it's called Mo Ghille Mear. The version I used is performed by the Choral Scholars of University College Dublin, which should be the top result if you search the song on TH-cam!
It's important to remember two things about Cromwell. 1. Puritans in general (not to be confused with Separatists, aka Pilgrims) tended to be very bitter and unforgiving toward those who had persecuted them in the past. So when the tables were turned and the Puritans came to power, they weren't feeling very merciful toward Catholics and Anglicans; the former of whom had severely persecuted all non-Catholics under Bloody Mary, and the latter of whom were founded for political reasons rather than religious ones, and who therefore were a mixed bag of religious tolerance and did not much like the Puritans for being Bible literalists and purists (hence their name). While the Puritans, like the Separatists, believed very strongly in the common man having access to the Bible, they managed to conveniently omit from their theology the verse that says, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." This makes Cromwell a product of very ill managed generational trauma. And he believed it to be his holy duty to perpetuate that trauma for as many generations as he could.* 2. As Wolfwalkers demonstrates, Cromwell actually deified himself. He created and assumed the title Lord Protector because it sounded divine. Literally. In the movie, you hear him asserting HIS will and calling it "the Lord's will." The lord he's referring to is himself. Cromwell did this in real life. Whether or not he fully understood what he was doing, it's hard to say. But the fact is that a man can lie with enough conviction that even he starts to believe it. So Cromwell probably truly believed that God's will was in perfect alignment with whatever his own will happened to be at the moment. Wolfwalkers does a fantastic job at portraying this side of Cromwell, establishing that while he looks on the surface like he's doing all this in the name of the Lord God, he is clearly doing it all solely in the name of the Lord Protector, a mortal man who has elevated himself to divine status. *It's worth also keeping in mind that the Goodfellowes are also products of this kind of generational trauma, with the unexplained death of Robyn's mother looming over them, possibly causing them to follow Cromwell to Ireland. Yet Robyn chose to break the generational trauma, and through her Bill was able to as well. They were able to befriend people who had historically been their enemies and persecutors, and they did so without having to give up their own faith and traditions. They simply adopted new traditions started by a man who predates the divisions within the church, and who demonstrated love for his enemies by bestowing on them a blessing that would protect them from being forced to pretend to love God, when loving God is only possible when one is free to choose NOT to love Him. Moll reflects this sacred choice with her name and her clothing. It is very intentionally left unsaid whether Moll and Mebh are pagan or Christian, because the choice, from the very beginning, was always supposed to be theirs. And they welcome into their pack two Christians who learned to let go of generational trauma and the bitterness it can create. Also it's kind of funny that two Puritans ended up in the same family as two people whose names mean "bitter" and "intoxicating."
normally, essay comments like these are just lengthy diatribes that make me tired and sad, but this one was thoughtful and interesting to read--thanks for commenting my dude, and thanks for watching!
Part of the reason animation studios switched from 2D to 3D is in part due to 2D animation artists unionizing. Also, I don't think many people are talking about it because last I checked it was only available on apple.
I'll repeat what I say in the video--you can sign up for a free trial of Apple TV+ and watch it that way, or if you want a physical copy, currently it's only available in the Irish Folklore Box Set. That said, I bought the box set and i love it and it's worth every penny
I also loved the character design since although both Robyn and Mebh are more tomboyish with Robyn’s desire to be a hunter and her athleticism, and Mebh’s more wild behavior, the studio doesn’t deny the girls’ femininity and emotion throughout the film. Unlike Disney that says you can’t be a strong female character unless you’re stone cold and behave JUST like a man 💀
I love this movie with a passion it first caught my attention because it was 2D I stayed because I love the characters and story the water color backgrounds are mesmerizing to look at, it is definitely underrated and deserves more attention I like song of the sea too because of the same reasons too I forgot about it for a while because I couldn’t find the title of the movie I’m glad that you made this video it’s pretty awesome Also could you tell me the name of the song at 3:12
A thing a lot of folks overlook when analyzing Wolfwalkers is a strong theme of subtextual queerness. I came out as a trans woman just a couple weeks before I first saw the film. And I have to say that in addition to anti-colonialism, the existence of Wolfwalkers and how their nature clashes with civilized society, stood out to me as clear as day as subtext for queer people clashing against Cisheteronormativity. The way Robyn is completely changed once she finally has a different perspective on the world around her. The way that change creates a dangerous conflict between her and "civilized" society. And the way she has to stay in the closet to stay safe, even though it's clearly torturing her to do so. That kind of a story is WILDLY gay and trans to me, to the point that it's practically overt text, not subtext.
the reason I don't go into the queerness in this video is because I worked on ANOTHER video with a friend of mine which is SPECIFICALLY about the queerness--feel free to check that video out here: th-cam.com/video/zmGIKHO1gPI/w-d-xo.html

What I love most about Wolfwalkers is that although it has fantasy elements, it's based on true history that happened in KIlkenny, Ireland
if only the real story ended with Ollie McWarcrimes plunging off the edge of a cliff ahahah
What is true about it?

Additional note about Cromwell- he fought in a bloody civil war in England to overthrow the monarchy to replace it with parliament, before taking over parliament and basically becoming a monarch himself. He was later replaced by the monarchy coming back with popular support because he was just that bad.
meet the new boss, same as the old boss...calls himself "lord protector" which is definitely not the same thing as a monarch...definitely 🤣
This film will be remembered in the future as a masterpiece i hope
Tom, I've missed hearing your voice talk passionately about the things you love. Glad you've found you way
My mom actually watched the secret of kells!
What's been lost will never be recovered.
thank you so much for this video, this movie needs more attention and is a gorgeous masterpiece
Attention Disney: THIS is how you make a feminist film. It's my favorite animated film of the new millennium, perhaps of all time.
Wolfwalkers is a great improvement from Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea. I like how slowly the portrayal of their story becomes more easily digestible for the audience who aren't well versed in Irish folklore and history. Plus ultra baby.
I still haven't seen My Father's Dragon, although I'm not sure it could Trump Wolfwalkers for me
Great analysis of the film, I definitely appreciate your comprehension of the artistic style. I adore this film and Cartoon Saloon, I hope they continue to thrive and stay humble.
I'm surprised you never mentioned the Running with the Wolves sequence, animated by former Disney animator, James Baxter.
My dad torrented Secret of Kells back IN THE DAY and I fell in love with Cartoon Saloon. To this day theybare my favorite animation studio.
I talk about visuals and themes but I don't disclose any major plot details, if that's what you're worried about
as for how you can watch the movie, you can do a free trial with Apple TV+ and watch it that way.
More on the differences between the city and the forest: the city is done in linocut style while the forest is more softer watercolors, LOVE the attention to detail in this movie 😍
indeed, the meticulousness and care of the creators is tangible
A year ago I watched Wolf walkers with all my family, we loved it. And we finished it with tears, even my dad, and that's a lot to say.
Highly recommend it too!
I hope your Chanel grows your content deserves to be seen
thanks so much, comments like these keeps us going!
Your animation in this is buttery smooth. It's so great to know that you're getting comfortable enough to have a wide range of topics hosted on the channel and it's hard to imagine you could ever paint yourself into a corner
thank you fren 😊
Haven't even watched the vid yet but I know it'll be great! So glad you recommended wolfwalkers in the discord because it's an absolutely breathtaking film.
i hope you enjoy!!
Also, the animation in the beginning looks really good!
thanks so much, I worked hard on the lil animation!
i just rewatched it aghhh im obsessed with it again
Glad to see more attention on Wolfwalkers
This made me respect wolves even more than I already have
This was an incredibly well made video! I really hope that My Father's Dragon brings Cartoon Saloon to the cultural forefront they deserve to be at.
OLLIE MCWARCRIMES.
I DIED. I AM DEAD. HILARIOUS.
ahaha i was proud of that bit
@@CurmudgeonMedia you should be XD
Great video as always with some slick editing
I've adored wolf walkers it deserves all the love you give it
Thanks for watching as always friend!!
(also I'm so proud of you, it's clear how much hard work went into this video and it turned out so so good!!)
thamk u for your support frem!!
My favorite movie by my favorite movie studio.
I’ve seen secret of the Kell’s and I loved it!
One of the best movies I've ever seen
Just watched it and absolutely loved it, made me feel like a kid again
I watched this today and man I absolutely LOVED it
Wow, this is a funny coincidence, I actually have the My Father’s Dragon book. It’s actually pretty good, as far as I can remember.
Well, you leave me no choice, I'll have to watch Wolfwalkers now.
Great job Tom, love your essay!
Edit: HOLY SHIT! That IS Sean Bean as Robyns father! He's my favourite actor!
I have seen this movie and I loved it
Personally a fan of characters that are 75% hair I gotta say I totally agree a wild hair style is good at visually representing the wild and free spirited nature of a character though the art style has to be done right so as not to make unpractibley long wild hair get in said characters way such as in movement and Wolfwalkers and the owl house are pretty damn good at doing just that.
It’s nice to know the Irish are such South Park fans.
Jokes aside, awesome video! I haven’t heard of this studio before, and I thank you for the introduction 😸
you're very welcome, and thanks so much for watching!
i learned a lot about the history behind this movie holy shit i love it even more now
glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
Just watching this now and it's so cool seeing Irish art be appreciated! Love the points that you made and the amount of work you put into research :)
Re Cromwell being a "very serious Villain for a kids film" - it's tame enough by irish standards, it doesnt go into much detail of the horrid shit he did 😅
All through primary school we were taught in history about the terrible way Britain treated Ireland, e.g.
@@CurmudgeonMediaat the time and for a good time after he was seen as an equivalent to Satan, and there were sayings like "the curse of Cromwell on you!"
When I moved to Britain a few years ago it SHOCKED me how much he's celebrated here and how little people actually know about him. Statements of regret for the troubles, the historic treatment of Ireland etc from the British government ring a bit hollow when there's a statue celebrating Cromwell attached to the parliament building 🤦
I actually specifically decided not to apply to rent a place that would have been ideal for my partner and I, cause it was on "Cromwell Road" and we could never get family to visit us with an address like that 😂 the shame would be unbearable!
Idgi
@@kateisblue it's like with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood...sometimes it's nice to dream :')
I love this movie!!! It deserved so much more attention than it got!
"Inject Cartoon Saloon into my eyes"
I want a dose to
I’ve seen one other movie from this studio and that was Song of the sea and that’s one of my favorite animated movies.
❤ watched their movies when I was young, by a lot
Noone talked about it because it was exclusive to apple's streaming service.
Not even a thousand veiws? So underrated!
thank you!
Could somebody talk about the music during the run in the forest just tooooo goood
It is one of the most beautiful films ever created
@@CurmudgeonMedia we don't need an Oscar, we alredy love the studio, but that would be a great oportunity for others to discover the studio
@@bdariamihaela exactly!
@@mackielunkey2205 I totally agree!
Great job.
I really Love this one.
I have watched it 1 million times I love it
I adore this movie and I’m so happy someone else knows how good it is!
And he believed it to be his holy duty to perpetuate that trauma for as many generations as he could.*
Also it's kind of funny that two Puritans ended up in the same family as two people whose names mean "bitter" and "intoxicating."
normally, essay comments like these are just lengthy diatribes that make me tired and sad, but this one was thoughtful and interesting to read--thanks for commenting my dude, and thanks for watching!
wolf walkers IS THE BESTMOVIE EVER ITS MY FAV but icant find it anywhere anymore
I just watched it for having the Folklore Trilogy pack.
Part of the reason animation studios switched from 2D to 3D is in part due to 2D animation artists unionizing. Also, I don't think many people are talking about it because last I checked it was only available on apple.
Irish movies or movies set in Ireland are the best I've seen, and I'm not saying that out of Irish bias!
Everybody talking about this wall about this they talked about everything matters movie
I don't even know where I can watch this. It's on Apple TV, but I don't have an Apple device. There doesn't seem to be a physical release.
I'll repeat what I say in the video--you can sign up for a free trial of Apple TV+ and watch it that way, or if you want a physical copy, currently it's only available in the Irish Folklore Box Set. That said, I bought the box set and i love it and it's worth every penny
I love this movie!
WOLFWALKERS HELL YEAH 🤩🤩🤩🥰😍😍
Don't dare talk about Disney Disney with a beautiful they make everything beautiful
What is the song that starts playing at 3:02? I really like it. :)
th-cam.com/video/zxjvNUNXhkU/w-d-xo.html 😄
I also loved the character design since although both Robyn and Mebh are more tomboyish with Robyn’s desire to be a hunter and her athleticism, and Mebh’s more wild behavior, the studio doesn’t deny the girls’ femininity and emotion throughout the film. Unlike Disney that says you can’t be a strong female character unless you’re stone cold and behave JUST like a man 💀
16:56 He does not deserve the Mac prefix tho, fuck that noise
Idk what that prefix means, it's just a name I adlibbed for purely comical purposes

@@CurmudgeonMedia and thank you for talking about wolf walkers it really is one of my favorite films
I wish they made a sequel for wolfwalkers 🐺
