Typically when the disciple/s are brought to accompany their Guru to the stage these days, it's not only the exposure and stage training for them, it's also good exposure to their Guru as well as a successful musician. So, it benefits both.

I've heard numerous renditions of "Palan laagi" but - and I've no hesitation whatsoever in admitting that this one stands out. The 7-minute aalap sets a poignant tone of what's to come - a serene, dhrupadi interpretation of Kalavati the likes of which are extremely rare to come by. As a child I had heard "Kalavati r ekta awdbhut modira aachhe" ... it sways and swings the soul. It's an incredible feeling to experience that "modira" in a way so solemn and dignified. Herein lies the quintessence of the "new you" - crisp, compact, controlled - balancing the cheery with the serious with innate free flowing grace. Footnote: aamar shomosto "Chholona jaani"-r uchchhaash aatke aachhe 1983 te, Nana Ronger Gaan-e. Chirojiboner moto. I love how she is nowdadays letting her disciples to accompany her. This is the most precious guru shishya parampara of our classical music.
