Thanks! After watching many videos on self publishing books, yours was the only one that finally answered my question as to what to do about the spine on the paperback book.
I want to say thank you! I have just uploaded my first children's picture book to KDP. You videos have been so helpful! I have watched your videos about Lily several times through my process. We didn't think we needed "bleed" but in the review process, once everything, was uploaded we realized that we did. Dread hit us, but we went back to try to change it and we COULD! Hooary! I wanted to let you know that I think KDP must have received your feedback and "fixed" it. Everything you had said has helped us along the way! THANK YOU!!
I think you can set preorders a year in advance now on Amazon kdp. And I don't think they don't own the book, they just provide the ISBN. The author owns the copyright.
Yes, I just think it can be something that makes people uncomfortable, that kdp owns the ISBN. Preorders are kindle only - you can't do it for paperback.
Ok I was just beating my head against a wall because KDP refused to accept my book, but it wouldn't show me an error. After an hour, I decided to rewatch this video, and sure enough I didn't add my imprint! Thanks Emma!
In Ingram spark, when the eproof is ready, I’m having a difficult time determining what exactly the interior page layout will be.. I’m concerned I’m about to receive my 30 author copies I ordered and the pages will be 1 page off. As in my spreads will be layed out wrong. I hate how it doesn’t show you how the book will be layed out, but instead, just shows you a PDF single page proof. For a picture book, it is crucial to see exactly how the book will look.
Hi, Emma - I'm back :-). Soo, I'm experiencing and issue with uploading to Ingram. When I finally get to the upload page and attempt to click on upload for either EPUB or Print for interior/cover nothing happens. I scroll over and nothing. As if the link's are dead. Am I doing something wrong? In the meantime I've also put an email into Ingram for help, too. Thanks for everything.
Hi Emma! This has been super helpful even now in 2022! I'm about to publish my children's book on IngramSpark and I don't know how to upload the files. The book has 38 total *portrait* pages plus the cover but the file that I've uploaded is in landscape and not portrait dimensions, so I have one page for the cover (front and back) and only 19 pages for the interior. Will there be a problem with that? I'm worried that ingram will cut the pages wrongly and fill the remaining pages with white, as you said on the video :(
Hi Emma, Thank you so much for this video series. With your videos I have managed to write and illustrate my own children's book. I am at to stage of publishing now, and I am so excited!!! I had a question, I have purchased my ISBN numbers and was wondering where is the best place to get the barcodes?
Hi Emma, great video! Extremely helpful :) Question - I have published my children's book on KDP with my own ISBN. I didn't select expanded dist. When I upload to IngramSpark, do I need to inform KDP (to transfer files) or will Ingram inform them? Thanks
You shouldn’t need to inform anyone, it should happen. If you have problems you can ask Ingram to do a title transfer and then not delete your KDP book.
Hi, Thanks for the helpful video. If you do Ingram Spark and KDP do you also use a Print on Demand or Bulk-Offset Printing company so you can market the book yourself to local retailers? Also, if you use Ingram Spark or KDP, do you communicate with your customer base to let them know your book is out there and provide the links? Thanks, in advance for your assistance.
Hi, Ok, so I was doing more research and realized that both IngramSpark and KDP are print on demand. Doh! It seems like if you use IngramSpark you can sell to bookstores and libraries, correct? Thanks!
I have a children's book completely done, for-matted, pictures etc. The cover plate generator does not work. I could just scream I am so sick of i-spark. They suck, can't contact them, nothing. I am about ready to just give up and shelve my book. Do you know anyone who can just put my book on i-sparks site? I have ISBN, but no bar code yet, as their site says they supply one, but from what I have read, NO THEY DON"T. I might have to go to LuLu or someone else, but I wanted an 8.5x11 hard cover. Help? Anyone?
I'm sorry to hear that. A few videos ago I made a tutorial on how I created my hardback cover for IS, see if it helps? No they don't provide an ISBN, but you can cut it out from their template.
I am trying to publish the exact same size but have run into formatting issues. I cannot find the correct margins in pages for KDP for an 8.5 x8.5 book. I know to add for bleed in page setting but I have changed all settings within document and it is giving me an error code. Do you know exact header/footer top, bottom, inside and outside margins?
Hi Emma, great vid. I have some very quick questions just a little confused on Amazon AND IS listings. 1) Did you get a duplicate listing of the book above on Amazon for uploading to IS and KDP? I had this problem before. 2) If you have uploaded a book with a Amz generated ISBN is it possible to add an IS hard cover to the same listing on Amazon? Thanks!
Hi, if your books have the same ISBN you shouldn't get a duplicate listing. If you have a hardback (has to be different ISBN to paperback) then that will link automatically to the other ones with same title. If it doesn't, just email Amazon to get it fixed
@@EmmaRosenBooks Thanks Emma. I'm guessing my problem came with doing the book using an Amazon assigned ASIN and then an ISBN from Nielsen on IS, so I'll have to see if I can get the dupes removed
Having an issue with ISBN's. I just purchased through Nielsen (UK) and they said they need my distributor. I listed both Ingram and KDP, but they can only list one otherwise the orders would be duplicated. I'm doing paperback with both, Ingram hardcover...so my expanded distribution will be with Ingram Spark. So would Ingram Spark be my main stock holder?
@@EmmaRosenBooks Yes, I emailed them and their advice was that I should pick the main stock holder. I will ask them more detail and post here in case others have the same issue.
@@EmmaRosenBooks response back from Nielsen: "We need to list one name. There wouldn't be any implications from either Ingram or Amazon ordering and it is very common for our customers to use both of their services." :)
Hey, good information from you...I got everything clear with KDP , I have one doubt that should we add a copyright page with the manuscript or KDP will do it as it assigned a KDP ISBN... please reply with this

Hello, Emma! I started watching your videos to help me self publish my first children's book on amazon and ingram. Got confused on the nielsen isbn page where it says 'buy 10 isbn prefixes'? Are those normal isbns? What does isbn prefix mean and if I do buy them can I use them just like a normal isbn so I can publish? I'm so confused about all the technical details :). I managed to upload the ebook but I want to start on the paperback and hardcover too. Also, do I need two different isbns for paperback and hardcover? Thank you so much :)
I believe it means that they are all prefixed in such a way that they are linked to your company - so they are all linked if that makes sense. And yes you need a different number for each format of your book x
@@EmmaRosenBooks Thank for the quick reply. Basically I understand that only I can use them if they are linked but I do not have a company, would they ask for any such details, do you know?
Emma, Do you have any video's on how to price my children's books for KDP and Ingramsparks? I'm in the process of publishing my first children's picture book in both hardcover and paperback. Pricing the books for sale to the general public and for wholesale customers is very confusing to me. I have a lot of time, effort and money invested in this project so far and I don't want to end up losing money on each sale. Hahaha Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, no I don't. Have a look at similar books to get an idea of standard pricing and then try the numbers out in KDP/IS to see if they're profitable. I've looked for a resource I used for setting wholesale discounts, but I can't find it. Basically the higher you set it, the more attractive your book is to stores. 40% is ok for larger stores, but smaller ones may want 55%. I've set mine at 40 because I can't make it profitable at a fair price if I set it higher.
