  • La Joya was founded between the years 1500 and 1600 on the old royal road from the port of Veracruz to Mexico City. Legend has it that in 1866, during the flight of Empress Carlota from Mexico, while passing along the old royal road from Veracruz to Mexico City, she lost a jewel in this place and in 1920 the name was changed from La Hoya to La Joya.
Among its historical monuments there is an ancient bread oven built by the Spanish with volcanic stone and lime during the colonial era from 1700 to 1760 (18th century). It has a small square with four light, medium and probably heavy artillery cannons from the 19th century, which at some point served in the La Joya fort.
The church of La Joya dedicated to San José was built in the 18th century and is between 200 and 250 years old. It is also an important part of the gastronomic corridor for travelers where they can taste a variety of cheeses, mole, barbecue and meats.
