that’s what i’m dealing with right now, i’m the only one in my family who can speak english. we moved here 4 month ago. they expect me to do everything for them. solve their problems, translate, deal with all that mature stuff like taxes report, doctor appointments, job interviews, medical insurance…i’m 12 by the way, and when i can’t help them i feel this guilt that i can’t really help them, i feel so miserable because they expect me to do everything for them, and when i can’t they say that they are so poor and can’t say anything, that im narcissistic because i’m tired of their problems.

Hi there, so sorry you have to go through that when you are only 12 years old.. you shouldn’t have to feel that immense amount of pressure or guilt b/c always know that your immigrant parents are still adults and it is ultimately their responsibility and priority to help themselves and not the other way around for some one that’s not even a legal adult themselves yet especially in the 1st world nation of the United States… I also grew up with immigrant parents so I know some of the struggles you are facing in having to feel like owe them everything just for bringing us into the world without us having any say in it… a lot of immigrant parents feel entitled to do and say whatever they want without thinking things through or how or how it can affect you mentally… they are adults that need to learn a thing or two about change and how to better adapt themselves into the culture and country that they chose for themselves to be in… I hope one day it gets better for you when you can get to the age to be able to move out and save the money from working just so you can know how it feels like to feel peace, privacy, and having boundaries for the very first time….

Hi there - my heart goes out to you reading your message. The guilt you mentioned feeling resonates deeply. It's taken several years of intentional effort during my 20s to dismantle that guilt in a healthy way, but all of that inner work was well worth it. To offer another perspective - now at 29, I'm able to look at these experiences with such gratitude bc I've seen how it's given me a level of strength and resilience that most people my age don't have. Those attributes have now become my advantage in many situations I've faced as an adult. Obviously, all of our situations are unique to us but I hope this note can offer some semblance of hope. Hang in there 🫶

I had a bit of breakdown today. Cried over the fact that I can't move forward without helping my mom who has always been poor. 1st gen American here. I'm exhausted. Nearly 30 and I STILL have to call and make payment plans for her, go to Doctor and dentist appts, accompany her for taxes. Everything I have to do for her. I'm exhausted. I have little hope that I will ve able to get out of this unless I move states or something something

Hey there - I just want to say that I feel for you, have been/somewhat still there, and really understand the overwhelm and struggle about prioritizing your own needs while caring for your family. Hang in there 🫶

Thank you for sharing this! My family aren’t immigrants but just the way the world changed from their generation to mine meant that we could live so much better lives with so much more opportunities that they had no access to. I could relate so much to this video and it makes me feel less alone ❤ subscribed!!!

I'm 29, and the burden of carrying all my family's responsibilities and finances is exhausting, since my family knows nobody and have no contacts, and after 30 years of living in Australia my parents still can't even read their own mail without my help
