Well that's it's purpose, since people care more their car, and fear scratching their expensive car, rather than life and safety of pedestrian or school children.

Actually this sort of thing is illegal as per traffic regulations in most places. Signs, signals, lights, markings, etc. should appear as minimalistic, clear and straightforward as possible, it's very much the international standards for traffic regulations as this is to cater to all sort of drivers.
"Optical illusion" such as this on a road crossing will affect drivers with certain depth perception not to mention those that are color blind as well, as they might have trouble perceiving the distance between them and the object causing even more room for errors for those behind the wheel.

Nah as someone who encounters pedestrian lanes with illusions on it, yes, you do tell yourself that "oh the illusion is coming up, time to ignore it"
But honestly most of the time when driving, you're on semi-autopilot so if you see an obstruction, without realizing, you will still slow down

It's Thailand that never makes all citizens know that cars must stop when ppl are crossing a pedestrian.
I was 35 when I knew this rule during my overseas trip.
Thai Government never produces ad on TV nor teach this rule in school.
