- "The Cow's Horn", performed by Ale Moller (www.alemoller.com) in concert at the Institute of Musical Traditions (www.imtfolk.org), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA on March 24, 2012.
Ale Möller creates his own landscape of music upon different musical traditionsof various origins. He operates freely, motivated by his own curiosity. His inquiring ambitions have been transferred to a wide audience, fascinated by the complexity of his music and intoxicated by his movement of the entire landscape.
The Möller signature is recognized by its significant drive, where there's always a tone that wants to move on by its own free will. Ale Möller can create a "craze-joy" like no other, both on and off stage, which is his explicit goal. As a musical storyteller he is very determined in his ambitions, as he started out at an early age playing the trumpet.
Later on he fell in love with Greek music and the Swedish folklore tradition, especially music from the Swedish province of Dalecarlia. Being a multi-instrumentalist, he can handle instruments like mandola, accordion, flute, shawm and cowhorn -- but foremost Ale is a musician that works his way into the very core of the traditional music that he encounters, no matter if the style is Greek rembetika or sulky triple tone.

@@NicholasKonradsen What I mean is that he uses the main outblowing hole (I don't know the technical term for that) to change the pitch too.

This amazing! Beautiful music! So I have to ask, does anyone here know where you might buy one of these, or a good source on learning how to make one? I mean getting a horn and drilling holes in it is easy, but I'm wondering about hole spacing and how it might affect tuning

I think the placement of the holes doesn't matter... It's their sizes that matter, and decides how much air is let through when not covered by your fingers.

This is an old comment but if you're still interested there are several good videos on yt for it, just search "cow horn flute" you should find it, considering the fingering holes to my knowledge the first hole should be in the balance point of the horn when held upside down the second and third is where it is most comfortable then the tuning to get a clear tone is a matter of expanding the holes until you are happy with the sound basically, you could most likely tune them but going by ear would most likely get you close enough.

how do you calculate the position of the finger holes?
Balance it over your index finger, the point of balance is the first hole made. Then a hole either side of this main point is made.

@@Markus_Breuss = once that point of balance is found with your middle finger, drill your hole, then place your middle finger over this hole once again, as if about to play. Your index finger falls naturally in place as does your fourth to mark and drill once again. Cut your point end first of course, before you seek the balance point. A Dremel tool is useful for opening out the mouth piece.
