on this model the common reason the tape does not operate is a faulty/dirty selector switch on the top panel.

Holy shit this is only 4 weeks old.
Hello there, I got a cream color QT70 and I'm having issues with getting it to work. When I run power to it though the cable port, it plays a loud low tone regardless of volume or settings. The only way I can get it to stop making that noise is when it's on the Tape Function. I can also get it to play using the jack extension. It plays at a low volume, but changing the volume and other settings still remain inoperable. The power light remains off though everything. I opened it up and it's more sun bleached and dusty than anything else I can see.
    Have any ideas?
Also, all the cassette functions seem to work, but I have yet to test it. All the buttons click and respond accordingly and the belt is astonishing spry yet.

Is your power supply definitely capable of delivering 500mA at 9V DC at the correct polarity? It sounds like an issue in the power or amp sections, but I am not sure what it would be. Someone may have plugged the wrong polarity power into it and damaged something.

I was using the cord provided (not a stock cord) and recommend to use it. Just checked and it's an output of 9VAC 1,000mA 9VA... The pull limit is higher than needed but that should be fine being it only needs 500mA?

@@Mattress-Firm If its AC output it wont work. I dont think they have any sort of rectifier in there. The socket just connects to the batteries and straight into the unit.

@@StevesElectronicRepairShop Wow, that was the problem. It works and works smooth. I was given the radio from a friend who couldn't get it to work for the life of them and the look on their face when I tell the the solution wasn't even the radio. This thing laid dormant for over 20 years and now it's time for it's second wind.
Thank you for the help! I would have totally over thought the problem and missed it.

@@Mattress-Firm Glad you got it going. They are a nice little box. You are lucky the AC adaptor didnt do any damage, especially being a 1 amp one. Shows how well they built them back then.
