Excellent instruction to build one and dearly thank you for that. All I missed was to hear from you that baths like the warm so hang the house on the SOUTH side of house or tree, so gets enough sun through the day and warm the little lovely guys inside, during cold days. Thanks for sharing.
Very Nice Video demonstration... and right on time, I'm replacing a 15 year old bathouse on a rainy February day... I do have one question... why not cut the vent gap on the front also at the same angles as the roof to prevent driving rain from going straight in? I have also found that just using rough-cut lumber leaves plenty of "toe grabbing tooth" on the wood for parents and babies to move up and down... if someone has an old screen laying around, that also works great... thank YOU so much for sharing and refreshing me on things to consider! Thumbs UP all the way and you have a new subscriber!
+Frederick Dunn I just found your triple chamber bat house for sale at Dr. Foster and Smith :) ORDERED! I would not have been so confident in my purchase, if I hadn't already watched this TH-cam video.. thank YOU!!!
Thanks for this.. I have been wanting to build some bat houses for around our place. I feel really good about building some now and getting them out in time for the babies this year!!
This is probably a dumb question but should i insulate the bathouses with foam insulation board? I feel like leaving it as is would be too cold for an illinois winter
Cliff Carlo If you paid attention, this is his business. His van has the same logo on it as his bat houses. So he was nice enough to share, for free, something he does for a living.
Thanks for making such a detailed tutorial! I'm moving into a flat with a garden soon and I'm really excited to put up bat and bird houses and so on. Never had a garden of my own before so I'm stoked. It's a rental so I'll try the rocket style bat house on the post, don't think the landlord would be thrilled if I nailed things to the wall of the building :P
I would guess it's basically the same design as this one's front wall, but x4. You'd want to cut the top of the post to the same angle as the roof, and probably have small struts or inside each of the four walls, where you screw through from the outside into the post
Can a 1/4 inch galvanized wire cloth be used instead of plastic mesh? How about window screen? Plastic or aluminum? Will plastic window screen be too slick? And where did you get that green plastic mesh?
Thanks that was a great vid. I live in the great land of Oz and have just become aware of our local micro bats, I think they are Eastern horseshoe bats. I discovered one caught in a garden orb weavers web, I managed to free him but he was well and truly "hung up! My aim is to build some boxes for them and your vid has been a great help.
Good explaination of different bat houses and what not to do, but DONT USE MESH! You didn't even describe how to attach the mesh which must be done by stapling every 2in at least. Cutting horizontal grooves is the way to go and I expect the DNR to stop advocating for mesh as bat can become entangled in improperly installed or old mesh. Get groovy everyone!
What do you do about mold/mildew which forms on the outside of the house? Does it also form on the inside? This seems to be a problem here in northern Michigan.
Also a Michigander here and would be interested to hear other ideas but also have a few of my own (untested). In the reptile hobby we use things like spray foam and silicone with coconut husk, sand, or various other substrates to create relatively mold resistant enclosures. I've also used grout to cover the outside of foam blocks which works really well in certain situations but may be less effective outside. It's not the prettiest solution but covering the wood in a black silicone and then pouring sand over it while the silicone is still wet may provide a fairly weatherproof layer to the house.
Can I still get some bats if it is closer to 7-8 feet off the ground? Or will they not be interested? I want to put some in my backyard when I move in to my new apartment, but I think that's about as high as I can manage.
I concur. Having the exact dimensions, list of materials needed and where to get them (the plastic used for instance), would complete the instructions.
Good video! The only thing I saw different then some other videos...that went to fast and that's why I prefer yours, however those other videos showed putting the caulk on as they built it and on the screws before drilling them in. other then that it looks awesome and easy. Oh did you get a pre-cut kit or did where ever you got the wood cut them for you.
I'm really surprised you recommend latex caulk. Mold *loves* latex caulk, and I recall, fungal infections are one of the primary threats to bat colonies?
@@desaraedecamp9751 the chaulk is really overkill. You could put a line of wood glue there if you're really concerned about drafts but there will be air flow from the bottom anyway.
Wood glue or silicone sealant. GE Silicone 2 has mold inhibiting properties and is safe as long as it has been allowed to fully cure and offgas. Both are probably overkill anyway though. Natural areas that they would sleep like behind tree bark aren't totally air tight.
Very nice vid - thank you. Not sure why they have to be so thin, however. Wouldn't more width assist with the avoidance of heat build-up? (I'm in a hot climate)
This is a GREAT video. Thank you for posting it. For me at this time it would be less expensive for me to purchase a couple of your bat houses rather than tool up to build them. Where do you sell your boxes OBC?
Don't go to the trouble of using chicken wire or mesh. Just deep scratches or grooves is more than enough. We have bats who happily scrabble up smooth but worn wood siding into crevices. And then you don't have to worry about any entanglement.
great video! but I have a few questions, we have some dwarfbats around our house ( pippistrellus pygmaeus), so should I make the house smaller or should I keep it at the size in the video?
Thanks for showing. The shade of any color is important for absorbing or reflecting light to maintain the right heat- 85° to 100° F, according to another video.
I didn't have Adult Supervision when I built this and because of that I got really drunk from all the beer I was drinking and fell over. You've been warned
I have my grandmothers house in Ireland and there was always bats in the porch roof. I hope to live there in the next few years when I have it done up and intend to make sure there are still going to be bats at the house. Years ago when I did live in the house a bat came into the house and went behind something fixed to the wall in the living room. I had to wait till the next night to let it out.
Can you place bat houses on the side of large hardwood trees? Want to place it in the wooded area of my property and that could save me some money on having to place a pole in the ground.
My neighbor has a HUGE bat house about 3 by 2 feet with multiple small sections for the bats to go in. It's in between his two ponds. I've noticed that while there are mosquitoes there they aren't awful like most ponds or wetlands. Wonder if they have enough food. I think those bats take care of mosquitoes near my house.
OK, you said "exterior grade plywood" so just to be clear, this is treated plywood? That's obviously ok since you're using it? Sorry for the dumb questions. Just want to do it correctly.
Not a word of explanation regarding the mesh. Brilliant. And I noticed you got lots of questions but nary an answer.
Excellent instruction to build one and dearly thank you for that. All I missed was to hear from you that baths like the warm so hang the house on the SOUTH side of house or tree, so gets enough sun through the day and warm the little lovely guys inside, during cold days. Thanks for sharing.
I want to be as excited about anything in my life as this guy is about bats

By "call" did you mean to say caulk? I am trying to make a bat house.
Thank you for the post idea. No wall needed! 👍👍👍
This is a wonderful introduction into building bat homes. I hope people are inspired after watching.
Loved this. I have always liked bats. Thanks for the video Rob......GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for this.. I have been wanting to build some bat houses for around our place. I feel really good about building some now and getting them out in time for the babies this year!!
I like how the bats come out at the end. It's like a carrier launching fighters
This is probably a dumb question but should i insulate the bathouses with foam insulation board? I feel like leaving it as is would be too cold for an illinois winter
It’s amazing they ever survived at all
Thank you for posting this great information and the comparisons. I can't wait to make some houses.
I like it a lot, but the dimensions would be really helpful.
He just put together a commercially available Bat House. Title should have been, "how to assemble a bat house that I bought from the store".
Cliff Carlo If you paid attention, this is his business. His van has the same logo on it as his bat houses. So he was nice enough to share, for free, something he does for a living.
@T Regis those side pieces arent 24 inches long..the back board is 24
square by rectangle
He dont even know the dimensions
Would you recommend adult supervision?
;)
Why wasn't there an adult present when this kid was building this one?
Seems to me there should be a few mo, yes mo, adult supervision warnings. I wasn't sure it was needed during a couple 15 second intervals.
If you are already an Adult around Children, expecting that you need some sort of warning...? Just relax and let them play video games.
Timothy Werner that's too many bats there will be no insects lmao
I'd rather have bats than mosquitoes in my backyard!
I love bats ... thank you for sharing xx

Good to see you recommend adult supervision when handling caulk. If you squeeze it too hard it can get in your eyes.
Great video man, do you perhaps have the measurements of the wood and stuff? I planning on building a few, thanks.
Is the mesh plastic or metal? Where can you get it? Awesome video!!
Could you make a video about how to make the rocket bat house, please. That's that type I'd like to install in my garden.
I would guess it's basically the same design as this one's front wall, but x4. You'd want to cut the top of the post to the same angle as the roof, and probably have small struts or inside each of the four walls, where you screw through from the outside into the post
There are several plans for them online.
we need to have a bat house tax credit to aid with slowing down the spread of zika
Xill909R I'll vote for you as senator
LMAO!!!!! Reading this in 2020!
Hi there. I'm on the look out for a nice tight box with a small opening which needs to enable access after dark. Adult supervision required.
Very well done video and bat house.. I was going to buy one but now, I’m building it myself. Thanks to you .
Great video and information.. I will be making a few this week
I'm going to build a few bat houses for our property up north.I bought cedar fence slats 3/4×6×8 and will cut slits instead of mesh.
so cool, never heard before of those bath houses
Define Mesh. What material are you using?
Can a 1/4 inch galvanized wire cloth be used instead of plastic mesh? How about window screen? Plastic or aluminum? Will plastic window screen be too slick? And where did you get that green plastic mesh?
Other videos recommend scoring the wood rather than mesh as if mesh comes loose bats could get caught.
Use rough lumber and bats can climb anywhere and have good traction
My question is, how long does it usually take for your bat house to attract bats so they feel safe and cosy?
Thanks that was a great vid. I live in the great land of Oz and have just become aware of our local micro bats, I think they are Eastern horseshoe bats. I'm going to make one with my dad. I live by the woods so we need one. My neighbor has some living behind his shutters.

So just cut horizontal grooves with my table saw?
how deep and how far apart for the grooves? Thank you!
I agree, the grooves are much safer and easier to do, they don't need to be deep, almost scratching horizontally with a screwdriver is enough.
Thank you! @@CogitoBcn
About 2 centimeters seems to he the concensus

@@mattg6106 I've always used Linseed oil to prevent mold and mildew growth on stained wood surfaces. It works wonders.

Great info.! Do you have plans (with sizes and type of wood) to the house you build on this video?
He told about the type of wood.
I concur. Having the exact dimensions, list of materials needed and where to get them (the plastic used for instance), would complete the instructions.
Great explanation. Whatabout surviving over winter?
These bat houses look like they'd be inviting homes to yellow jackets.
Any plans? Like board sizes, etc,.?
What type of mesh do you use and where do you find it? Thanks.
Hello Theresa
How are you doing?
I'd get a 100% silicone caulk instead of that latex acrylic stuff , to each their own. well done
Cool video! Dimensions would be nice
Where can I find the plans for this bat box?
I'd like to build kits for a local non-profit here in upstate NY.
Do you have a link to what you used for the mesh? Just so I can find a comparable?
Great video, would love to know dimensions
Would you recommend adult supervision? Or should I just run with scissors?
James Delnort run for it, adults are overrated.
Good video! I would skip the caulk. It is overkill.
I would imagine that glue would be better to seal the box.
Should not this wood be sealed? Otharwise, it will rot? Or is this exterior plywood alreddy sealed?
That is why it should be made of cedar.
Very nice vid - thank you.
Not sure why they have to be so thin, however. Wouldn't more width assist with the avoidance of heat build-up? (I'm in a hot climate)
They want It hot. They will start hibernating if too cold. And the thin design protects them for paws of coons and cats and the weather
Would this work in Arizona? I feel like it might turn into a oven
This is a GREAT video. Thank you for posting it. For me at this time it would be less expensive for me to purchase a couple of your bat houses rather than tool up to build them. Where do you sell your boxes OBC?
Do you recommend adult supervision??
Are there actual plans eith dimensions actually available?
It's a kit, that's why so easy.
Where are the measurements and how much of what lumber?
Can I substitute latex caulk for wood glue?
Thanks for the supervision warning you don't wanna bunch of crazy kids building by houses!
Now I need to build a Robin house!
I'm building a 5 chamber bat house. Does it make sense to use the ventilation slot in the front since it will only ventilate the first chamber.
Don't go to the trouble of using chicken wire or mesh. Just deep scratches or grooves is more than enough. We have bats who happily scrabble up smooth but worn wood siding into crevices. And then you don't have to worry about any entanglement.
As an adult, should I use a mirror to supervise myself?
do bats return to the same house each time? with so many bat houses on that barn it must be confusing for them. great job!
I bet bees will love this thing as well.
He said "You might like bats!" happier than a kid ordering ice cream.
Is there anyway to prevent or deter wasps/bees from nesting in the bat house?
To avoid accumulation of Guano , the bottom should be completely open.
Can the back just be made of cedar? Sounds easier than mesh or scoring
great video! but I have a few questions, we have some dwarfbats around our house ( pippistrellus pygmaeus), so should I make the house smaller or should I keep it at the size in the video?
How about using stainless steel mesh instead of plastic ??? Making the roof a much greater pitch and using silicone caulk instead ??? Thanks
Smooth the caulk out to make it nicer!
How do you mount it?

Do you have a site thay tells you the dimensions of how to make this box? Thanks
Very helpful video. Thank you.
the one item that might confuse people and you failed to say what it was. is that just window screen you are using for mesh?
Jeffery Legere You can use plastic gutter guard screen . I think it comes in a roll. That’s what I’m going to use.
He said it was plastic
Type of mesh?
Can u provide a quick explanation of the rocket type? How far are the wall from the center post?
Can you post where we can get that kit please.
Where do I find the mesh? Thank you!

The caulk is a surprise as I have been told that bats are sensitive to smells.
will bat guano degrade a metal roof?
What do you mean by mesh? What is it? Where can I buy it? Thanks!
type mesh on Google.
I have one that has a 3/4 inch opening but it has 4 inch sides. Will bats live in it?
What kind of mesh is that
