Why does my calculator just say math error when I type it in

That either means the question has no solutions or you have typed it into the calculator incorrectly.
When you square a negative number make sure you have brackets around it. So don't type -2^2, type (-2)^2.

you didn't mention to put a times between the brackets in the calculator as it doesn't recognis algebra and will just say error.
