Those hands. They are even bigger in-person. Bigger than you can imagine...like his heart. I sat with him for about 45 minutes at a signing in Vegas. An unexpected bucket list checkoff. Soft spoken, real, and genuine. Rest in peace.
It’s really nice to see how clear minded and strong he was until the end at 80 years old, can’t ask for much more than that. I’m 29 but grew up on Butkus highlights. Rest In Peace Mr. Butkus
Now I feel old! I remember watching this man playing football with the Bears, of course I was only 13 in 1970. He doesn’t look the same when he was on NFL live. But you hear his voice which hasn’t changed one bit! Just goes to show you, life is short.!
Thank you for this! Butkus is my favorite player of all time - and I'm old enough to have watched him play. Great guy, and IMO THE best to ever play that position.
Great story's my hero RIP #51 one of the best players ever thanks for the memories. A true Monster of the Midway heart and pride of Chicago Bears up BEAR DOWN 💯🐻🏈 I was hooked as kid watching #51 & #40
Being a new fan of the sport and the Bears, outside of the US, I had only heard of 2 players until a few weeks ago. Tom Brady and, long before that, Dick Butkus.
Rest Heavenly 51 ... Truly a Bear for the ages and Mount Rushmore face of the Bears franchise right there with Walter, Gayle, and Papa Bear. An absolute legend and trailblazer when it came to having a football career after his football career as well from broadcaster to brand ambassador for Miller Light He really layed out the blueprint being followed to this day by retiring players.
This one really hurt, I went to an autograph session at Caesar’s a couple of years ago and sat down with Mr Butkus; I was like a seventh grader again!!
My favorite player of all time, he is 100% right the hall of famers especially should get paid once you get there. These guys played for the love of the game gave everything they had and got paid nothing compared to these guys today.. and not once would they complain..god bless Legend
BUTKUS WAS MY HERO WHEN I WAS A KID HES STILL MY HERO AS A FATHER & PAPA R.I.P BIG GUY YOU POURED YOUR HEART OUT FOR US & WE WERE BLESSED SO TO WATCH GOD BLESS DICK BUTKUS WE LOVE YOU BROTHER THE GOAT
I had the experience of seeing a bear game at Wrigley field we one you the city little league championship and they took us to a Bear game , it was awesome
Man losing Butkus is like losing Papa Bear again, grew up watching his highlight reel on repeat. Bear Down. Heart, Passion, ferocity. Very few players embodied Chicago sports like Butkus.
Growing up in Chicago in the 60’s Butkis was my idol. I wore his number in high school and tried to play like him. It kind of worked. Our team was undefeated during my junior year. Whatever works!
I finally got to meet me, my Older Brother Bart and Papa Bart's Football Idol 10 months before he passed. I told him what he meant to us Sweeney Men. We played with his ferocity and carved out fearless reputations on the gridiron to the best of our abilities. Butkus was one of my life coaches. Love this man. My Big Brother Bart is getting his Last Rites as a Roman Catholic now. Bart, you were OUR Dick Butkus...You'll be with Mom, Papa and #51 soon...Love you Brother. Matty
Yeah I wouldn't think he'd like playing as much today, safer roomier stadiums or not. He liked being in an out and out collision sport and would not like being restricted from being "in his element." QBs would like having the whole field free of having to worry about his team's running backs taken out of that game by him. He'd do great today but I'd bet he enjoyed the intensity of the old school game with all it's dangers and faults.
I bet the bears organization bought them a Dance coach to be lite on there feet on that baseball field. Great player. Way before my era of watching football yet I bet he inspired one of my viking favorites: linebacker Chris Doleman.
Never forget No51 cross over the field to make the tackle during those late 1960s and early 1970s. Bow legged and all. Played sandlot against black guys. One dude wore a sweater that spelled Dick Butkus the ass buster.😅 the guy was black.
Nobody ever tackled like Butkus on a consistant level. Pick um up legs churning and drive them into the ground. Nobody.....btw I'm from Baltimore not Chicago.
Today's sissy rules would certainly have hampered Butkus's ferocity. There is no more playing with reckless abandon and violence like Butkus, and many others did, today. I understand the reason for some of the rules changes, but in some cases they have just gone too far. I question many of these "targeting" calls for one.
No more long passing here on out unless the route talk understood!!! Young QB mistake?...bears game was on point just some Slight QB talking on Route run.... it's not over
Bullshit. All you have to do is listen to his contemporaries...and I'm talking HOF guys, the best that ever did it, from the 60s, the most violent decade of football ever - and they will ALL, every one, say that he was the most devastating, fearsome, and effective football player that ever lived. Even the coaches, legends like Tom Landry, etc.
I grew up watching Dick play he was my hero ,he was not fast but no one could beat him across the field to tackle a back weather it was a quarter or running back.I’m 71 years old
Rip to the best defensive bears player we have ever witnessed and in the entire NFL. He played with Illinois heart! Will be sorely missed!
Butkus is the GREATEST PLAYER in pro football history.

RIP Dick Butkus. Thank you for putting this together.
This man is what being a Chicago Bear is all about. Hearts out to the Butkus family and Bears nation. Gone but not forgotten. 🧡

Absolute tank, and a humble and down to earth man. A real role model for young men

A die hard Ram fan that got to see Dick Butkus play. The greatest LB ever that played on bad knees and a bad team.
Growing up in Chicago in the 60’s Butkis was my idol. I wore his number in high school and tried to play like him. It kind of worked. Our team was undefeated during my junior year. Whatever works!
Passed away a month later RIP Dick Butkus
So proud we had him.
I must be gettin sentimental. I’m starting to cry watching this. 😂
Greatest MLB in NFL history. Butkus used to drink at a bar called the Tiny Tap in Chicago because nobody bothered him there.
❤❤❤❤❤.
❤
Monster of the Midway. Enjoy that stadium in the sky, big fella.

No doubt the very best linebacker ever.
If their was still players like Butkus, not even as good but had the same mindset I’d still be a NFL fan.
Halas was a BRUTAL owner
Rest in power❤ the true goat 🐐 best LB EVER.

We had Sayers. We had Sweetness. We had Singletary, but Butkus will always be the face of the Chicago Bears.
Im glad he was effected by cte that i kno of, especially with the nfl playing style back then
RIP BUTKUS
And he never wore a earring. Lawrence Taylor couldn't carry butkus Jack strap

Nobody ever tackled like Butkus on a consistant level. Pick um up legs churning and drive them into the ground. Nobody.....btw I'm from Baltimore not Chicago.
The guys who laughed on the bus after a loss didn't give their all...pissed me the F off...
Now they eat Cliff Bars & sip green tea...
Y’all had him sitting in one of the most uncomfortable chairs for his last interview. Also, I’d rather have Screeden interviewing.
Back when the NFL played real football as I remember as a kid. Not this BS they play today.
He virtually played on one leg, with a bad knee, find somebody to do that today.
Today's sissy rules would certainly have hampered Butkus's ferocity. There is no more playing with reckless abandon and violence like Butkus, and many others did, today. I understand the reason for some of the rules changes, but in some cases they have just gone too far. I question many of these "targeting" calls for one.
Now he would be sidelined for constant flags of unnecessary roughness. Football is nothing like it use to be.
No more long passing here on out unless the route talk understood!!! Young QB mistake?...bears game was on point just some Slight QB talking on Route run.... it's not over
The clock save vikings.
He died what the Victorians call:
the *_“Good Death™”_* ✝️😇
Wait hes back??????
Greatness never dies!
Nice but one of the worst last questions to ask. smh.
😢 absolute crime he had to play for George Halas. The cheapest owner in the history of pro football and one who as a coach was obsolete after 1939.
True save for the fact he was the head coach in 1963 when they won the World Championship
Butkus was a great player and interesting character but this interview is not very informative or exciting.
Wait that’s a real person? Lol I thought it was another name like Seymour Butz
LOL
More myth than reality. The fish get bigger every year.

@@joeblough261 he was great on the run but terrible on the pass, but carry on with your devotion.
