new moon is a good listen but I would understand if you didn't make a video on it since there is 24 songs on it, but some of his best solo acoustic stuff is on that album imo
I was still so devastated at losing Smith when this was released, it really colored my reaction to it initially, but even on first listen it felt unfinished compared to XO and Figure Eight. And keep in mind this came out 4 years after Figure 8, which at the time felt like forever, regardless of his death, bc he was at his peak fame in the late 90s post-Good Will Hunting, and most artists like him were still releasing music every two years back then. The music landscape changed a lot in those 4 years. The Strokes and the White Stripes and Coldplay happened. Radiohead's Kid A happened. I like most of the acoustic softer songs here, plus King's Crossing and Coast to Coast as the better rockers, but I think of this as a posthumous collection of recordings from 2000-2003, not his "next album." New Moon from the '95-'97 era is a better posthumous collection overall, though, I think Twilight is just perfect.
I get that "Beatles White Album" feeling too. Its a bit sprawling with jagged guitars and psychedelic touches throughout. But what a loss - it saddens me
Loved the reaction, I kinda figured you might not love the entire album and you’re dead on with those 4 songs being the best on the album. Also I love Shooting Star, he wanted to play it live with a full band and have all the guitar doing windmills during the hard parts. As far a New Moon goes, you need to listen to all of it, I’m betting you’ll like it more than this album. Keep them coming!
In terms of New Moon Alex, it's my second fave Elliott album behind the self titled. The songs were recorded during his Kill Rock Stars phase, the songs were flowing like water from a tap, and it's incredible to think none of them fit onto proper albums such was their quality. Like many others, i prefer this phase of Elliott than the full band phase. It also includes the only version of Miss Misery committed to record, and that is not even one of the better songs here!
By the way, loving all of the reactions so far, agree with pretty much everything except for Figure Eight, as I thought the songwriting slipped a little compared to the others. Keep up the good work man, hope life is treating you good 👍
I have some mixed feelings about this album too. I definitely love the more chaotic dissonant sounds (oddly enough this was the album that was easiest for me to get into cause im more familiar with that sort of sound), but ultimately it did feel janky and unfinished. The songs I do love on here I really adore, but the album as a whole feels off in a way I can't fully describe. I quite like it lyrically too. More than anything this album just makes me wonder what direction Elliott would have taken in the future. Something else entirely, or hone more of the dissonant sound? Wish we could see what he'd do but nevertheless I'm thankful that we got to hear him experiment with this album! As for new moon, i'd like if you listened to both CDs, though I understand its a lot of music. Its a compilation of unreleased tracks, so both sides are equal in sound in my opinion. Plus disc 2 has some of my fave Elliott songs lol!
This is one of those that, i think, will tend to grow on you overtime. It's very flawed, partly likely cause of some elliot-ism, a lot of it because it's unfinished and because Schnaff for completely egotistical reasons decide not to consult Elliott's producer and work with him. I didn't love it on my first listen, but i grew to really appreciate many of the tracks and the sound Elliott was going for. I wish we could have seen the version he wanted.
How long do you estimate it will be until you get to Sketches? I’ve been postponing my off the grid retirement in Greenland for this reaction. Also, for your next Polak album, put Led Zeppelin’s Presence in every slot, then when the votes are tallied, react to an entirely different album. This is how channels grow.
