I do think that Dua firing her management in favor of her father is where things took a turn for the worst. With her father as her manager I think her career will flop hard. The management she had before knew exactly what they were doing. They knew how to promote her as the next big popstar. I saw an interview where Dua said she hired her dad as her manager to keep her grounded. I think it's good to stay grounded BUT I don't think her dad knows anything about managing popstars based off the Radical Optimism album rollout.
if it wasn't for the 4 year wait and all the build up i feel like the album would be better received. Imagine she announced Radical Optimism as a fun short summer album before her next big project, i don't think people would be frustrated over that
yeh i thought she'd either flop like she has or maybe just redo alot of future nostalgia for success on paper. part of me was open to the idea of her really upping her artistry but she's never shown herself to be a stand out. all of her music is just trendy dance pop.
I feel like she was confused about what direction she wanted to take with this album. She aimed for a more alternative, gritty, psychedelic sound, as she marketed it, to avoid repeating Future Nostalgia. That's why she brought in Tame Impala for the project, and they somewhat achieved this with Houdini. However, she couldn't maintain that direction throughout the entire project, so she returned to a sound she was more familiar with. I think if she'd taken more time, she could have created a double album-one darker side with songs like Houdini, and a lighter, more oceanic and summery side with songs like Illusion and Happy For You.
I was expecting psychedelic theme throughout with amazing production and experimentation instead we got a lukewarm album. She should have immersed herself with tame impala and make still pop music but with unexpected instruments.
And especially the marketing was Extremly deceiving cuz after Training Season Ppl were fully convinced that the album was going to be a Psychedelic era as you mentioned Yet she just did a cute summer album (don't get me wrong the summer songs are bops!) But I feel so and many ppl feel underwhelmed on how the album just went in a safe route instead of the promised "Experimental" era😭😭😭 Tampe Impala x Dua album wouldve been a BANGER
I truly hope there will be "dark side" deluxe. Because she's been saying that she sees this album in red and blue, so we've got blue. Now we NEED red version with more psychodelic songs like Houdini, with darker themes and more experimentation. It fully fits her "femme fatale female alfa" style and presentation. I think it really can revive this album cycle and prove haters wrong. A lot of fans were expecting psychodelic music and will be glad to finally get it.
Yeah I liked her ‘Training Season’ and ‘These Walls’, I honestly think people are still expecting the Future Nostalgia era from her because she set the bar too high during lockdown.
@@heyhoi2371 THIS. I’m still rooting for her and she is probably my fav pop artist out of them all. Let’s all hope her and her team will be able to learn the lesson from this era!
I think she needs to come back with more personality, future nostalgia made her a tastemaker, she needs to go back to that. I think she attempted, but ultimately played it safe. The vibe she was describing before the album came out was very interesting. I also really like houdini and illusion, they deserved better!
@@danielcampos9470 when I say personality, I’m not talking about authenticity of the artist, it’s pop music. I mean in the album itself. Like visuals or the music. I don’t think future nostalgia is authentic for example, but the album had a lot of personality. Versus radical optimism where I think she did try to be more authentic but the album and visuals lack personality.
I enjoyed Radical Optimism and I respect that she didn’t take the easy route and continue with only doing the dance sound that she did on Future Nostalgia.
I’m not sure what this would do for her career but I think I would love to see her pivot to a more pop rock sound. I don’t think her career is over by any means, I do think being from Europe it’s already hard for those girls to breakthrough in the US but I do think she can recover some of the magic Future Nostalgia gave her she just has to come back harder, and not during a time where pop is oversaturated with releases. If anything she’ll be huge in Europe for the rest of her career
I'm going to be sincere, the problem with Dua Lipa is that this album looks a lot like future nostalgia except (houdini) which is an excellent song now you have the impression that all her music is similar, she has to offer us some things of new part example we do: pop ballad, country, electric, rnb I don't know but make different sounds artists must come out of their bubble and offer us different standards if they want longevity.
it would help a lot if she goes pop rock. i cannot imagine Dula Peep doing more pop because pop these days is pretty much 70s and 80s inspired. I also can't see her doing Y2K because she isn't bubbly. Club or electro pop would be too predictable because that's what's trending now.
I’m so confused on the aesthetic and direction of radical optimism. At first it was like retro athletic aesthetic but now it’s like futuristic vacation?? I don’t know lol
What happened to the "psychedelic pop" influences that Dua was going on and on about ahead of 'Radical Optimism" being released? She gassed us all up with that description, which made zero sense given the ACTUAL sonic direction of it. Disappointing.
I remember reading the Rolling Stone article which mentioned what she was influenced by, and I got really excited because many of her influences listed, I was listening to a lot. I was very excited for a pop singer to interpret pop rock/UK electronic music because it's never been done before. Then she dropped the album/singles and it was just disappointing except for Houdini which felt like a rehash of future nostalgia.
She said she wrote a ton of songs for Radical. Maybe she chose the safest songs thanks to her new management and caused a summer rebrand. A very bad move for her.
I really liked Houdini, Maria and French Exit but besides i have to agree, for better or worse, it feels like a very clean & safe project that didn't had an impact for me
I think a part of why Radical Optimism isn't as successful is because there's so many more pop girls that are in the spotlight right now. Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan especially are dominating right now, plus Taylor Swift has been garnering a lot of attention with the eras tour and the Tortured Poets Department album. All the attention is on them and their music rather than Dua Lipa's.
There were tons of pop girls during future nostalgia era so that means nothing. Also Taylor Swift isn’t a new pop star, she has been huge for over a decade and the tortured poets department didn’t have any big hits, it’s taylor’s least critically acclaimed album so again this comment makes no sense.
@@elyy0345 lemme fangirl for a min; the album debuted at no.1 and has been very consistent. billboard also confirmed that she'd still be at the top even with just one variant. she secured the entire top10 and just took home a huge vma win which pushes her to a career all time high of 30 vma wins. everyone has been talking about the album and ranking it which is even more impressive because it's a double album with 31 songs. the way she's been able to market music consistently and still hit heights really speaks to how well she's liked and how smart of a businesswoman she is. fortnight is the lead single and therefore the most popular and it's hard not to hear it playing all the time. the eras tour helped boost some fan favourites. overall it's a great feat and something that other artists would kill to have.
@@shikazh5139 I think like Honest said, the album played it safe but he doesn’t see it screaming ICONIC. Ariana and Britney are huge pop icons, whether we like their music or not.
Personally I liked Radical optimism it was a decent album one of my all time fav songs is Houdini especially the music video! I didnt like the rollout of the album it was such a long wait and I think had more potential like the training season music video is so bad and the fact that she performed the song at the grammy while not being released was a loss. Overall im happy she still took pride in her work and though it did not do numbers it was good for me. I did not like her recent interview where she said she doesn't like to be too open in her songs. Maybe that's what she lacks is more authenticity or more meaningful work than others can relate too
Maria is a gem of a song on that album and has snuck into my list of hidden faves. I dig the melancholy yet hopeful story being told in it. But yeah, I'm not sure why I'm just now seeing her promote a tour when other artists smashed out their tours right after album drop to capitalize on people's excitement.
I kinda lump radical optimism with endless summer vacation because they’re albums that I feel indifferent about but sometimes I often go back and listen to it.
I feel the same exact way! I didn’t love those albums but I didn’t hate it. They were fine to me and I don’t mind listening to them. It’s just that Future Nostalgia and Plastic Hearts were so good!
@@jeremykrause153 That. And Ariana has a eccentric personality. Dua is straight up bland. If she had good music out. Nobody would care about the blandness. But she don't

So where are the people calling her "a legend" already because of ONE super duper popular album? Really... The same was with Katy Perry during Prism era. "She's better than Madonna!". Ok sweetie.
Sabrina Carpenters videos on youtube reached more than 90 millions in matter of weeks, Dua's main songs from this album not even 50 millions in 9 months😮
And somehow she’s planning to do several solo stadium shows in London next year + world tour with that album - really feels like an overstretch for this era
I was thinkin this exact thing she should do smaller venues for her true fans for a more intimate experience to develop they loyalty idk well see how it goes
Your overview here is so well researched, articulated and fair. I'm now subscribed and 100% agree. And yes Dua Lipa does have a unique voice for current times, but I can also say she sounds very similar vocally in tone to a less Jazzy and soulful Sade. Another factor would be the pop landscape has changed since her last release with the quality and character of Fem Pop being so much higher this year.
I'm going to be sincere, the problem with Dua Lipa is that this album looks a lot like future nostalgia except (houdini) which is an excellent song now you have the impression that all her music is similar, she has to offer us some things of new part example we do: pop ballad, country, electric, rnb, rock I don't know but make different sounds artists must come out of their bubble and offer us different standards if they want longevity.
I loved radical optimism. I have merch and bought the vinyl at target on release day . But the album rollout was really weak. I wasn’t expecting another future nostalgia. I think that’s her best work and will always be. It does make me sad that it under performed though. I was really excited for a new LP from Dua. I know that I like the album but I know a lot of people don’t. I also feel like Dua doesn’t really have a strong fanbase
I feel like I must be in the minority of people who actually loved this album, I've had it basically on repeat along with some of my other favourite artists in a single playlist. There isn't a single track on the album that I skip and that's kinda rare for me.
Everyone was ready to call Dua a flop this year, then she shut people up by headlining Glastonbury, and selling out Wembley Stadium, *TWICE.* who are the female popstars selling out stadiums? You can count them on one hand. 🤚 To be honest Radical Optimism _is_ her weakest album to date. But her two previous albums happen to be 2 of the most streamed albums by a female artist…ever, and she’s ready to cash in on that with a massive world tour. Pop will be more competitive for her going forward with Sabrina & Chappell becoming Pop’s new “it girls” - she won’t be the ‘shiny new thing’ anymore and will fly under the radar if she fails to stand out.
I don't think this is 100% her fault. I don't think that anyone thought when Houdini came out that one of the most legendary rap beefs ever would happen at the same time that her album came out.
This is just not true. Pop has definitely been still here with acts like Sabrina and Chappell being able to push through amidst the Kendrick and Drake beef. Plus, Dua has a lane for herself with true dance pop and anticipation with Houdini but she failed miserably with the two last singles (Training Season and Illusion)
@@rao803 for massive popstars like Taylor swift,Ariana grande, beyonce and Lady gaga maybe but like if selena gomez or bebe rexha dropped they both probably would have gotten out shined. And lost to the general listeners who listen to many different genres
She’ll get her time again, there is just too much going on with pop right now and everyone is on this Sabrina and Chappell thing right now. Also artists like Taylor and billie are just heavy hitters and top charts. Charlie XCX had some decent success, too. Dua’s most recent album just didn’t connect this time. It happens
One of the reasons the deck is stacked against her, is that she is not American. The American music industry works harder to prop up American artists (which is fair enough). Getting access to an overcrowded American market is just harder for foreign acts. Generally, artists from Britain, Australia or wherever else, have one or two hit albums in America before gradually falling off the radar.
@janniewallace5588 Success in music is less to do with personality than it does with marketing and PR. Heck, a record label can literally use its resources to craft an exciting 'personality' by giving an artist really inventive fashion and album concepts. If you are an artist under a major record label and that record label gives you generic pop music and a basic af visual concept, you will always seem boring. A major artist (especially those without the influence of a Taylor Swift or Beyonce) is only as exciting as their label allows them to be.
@@elinat2414 You're personality can save your era. Look at Ariana Grande. Dua is bland, what out Pop hits. Most Brits have a stiff upper lip personality. Stoic and cold.

To be fair Mabel and Ava max deserve to have a huge come up. Remember also that Sabrina carpenter was also in that same box and now she’s broken through
I just don’t think certain celebrities have enough passion behind their work sometimes. They have all the money and all the attention they could want and it’s like they never experience anything that’s worth putting in a song or relatable as a listener. It’s like they have to pretend they’ve been in pain or been challenged over something etc. but it’s obviously not true and you can feel that in the album. That’s why first albums always hit harder because they come from a place of authenticity but the follow ups are just made because “it’s time to make more music and stay relevant”
I woke up this morning and bought tickets to her LA show and it sold out so quick that they had to add a 3rd show in LA. I think she is doing just fine
Resellers buy tickets first, it happens to all artist. That’s why sometimes you see these arenas half empty cause the scalpers weren’t able to resell those tickets.
I would definitely consider Dua Lipa to be among the most popular artists out today even with a somewhat underwhelming third album. Her second album secured her spot with the run she had. Coincidentally, this video dropped yesterday, Sept. 18 2024 about a week after she announced her Radical Optimism tour for 2025 which initially included two dates for New York City, Sept 17 and 18, 2025, and today as I write this, Sept. 19, 2024, Madison Square Garden just announced that due to overwhelming demand they were adding a fourth show so now she’ll be playing sold out shows on September 17, 18, 20, and 21, 2025 at Madison Square Garden. I think her career will be just fine.
Why does no one talks about her vocal performance in each of her albums? I think vocally speaking, in Future Nostalgia, she couldn’t give her all. Cause the music took the absolute spot. She is not the star of the show, the music was. But in her 1st and 3rd, she gets to really sing, which I absolutely enjoy.
She must stick to her pop dance genre albums like Kylie Minogue but every time in between she must also releases experimental genre just to make a statement that she is versatile and will always be evergreen. Mind you this woman has a lot reserve songs in her little songbook that she brought to USA some times ago.
9 yrs in the game with 3 albums but only 1 was good enough to show for it. That's crazy the fun pop bangers she's known for has now become something everyone is gearing towards e.g Sabrina and chapell so she doesn't stand out anymore
This statement hugely undermines success and play of her first two albums, at least here in the UK. She defined an era. I’m just excited for the next album, don’t lose hope so easily :)
Wdym her first two albums are in the top 10 most streamed albums. She has one off album, it’s not the end of her career or anything. It’s happened to like almost every artist
houdini it’s still the best song from the record and even from her career i would say. It has that dance psychedelic groovy vibe to it, that even shines more in the extended version.
I was sad because I LOVED the title of the album! and I loveeeee dua! I was really hoping the songs would be about life and learning how to be optimistic in the middle of the messy times we live! I just wanted something real that would make me feel.
almost every song on future nostalgia is an absolute hit to this very day, but there’s just a few songs off radical optimism i enjoy. even those songs though i dont really listen to anymore. its a shame after waiting over four years, and having to maybe wait another four for the next one
She got talked out of leaving her manageable by pop's as if she had her own artistic vision / direction figured after critical success. Not saying she needs to be an artist that can do everything like a Prince or something, but I kinda understand why some people feel like she isn't all that much more talented in other upcoming popstars. ( She's definitely been hoarding, no doubt )But, I don't think she's close to done; she just needs to get to work. :)
I’ve been a huge Dua Lipa fan for many years and Radical Optimism was the first album I actually deleted off my phone ☹️. I didn’t like any of it 😭. I’ll hang around Future Nostalgia until her next era.
Both singles, Houdini and Training Seasons are, in my opinion, amazing, they're bops and hits to me. Catchy, funky, dance-able, and they have an empowering message. I loved the album and the singles. I hope she continues to make great Pop music as she has been doing so up to now.
Every artists that drops an album after they leave there record or a contract ends they have a flop era Taylor swifts lover did bad cause of marketing but a year later folklore and evermore really defined her as a artist and was a major point in her growth
I also thought with the timing of radical optimism, it would be saying something a little deep. Like even renaissance managed to be timed in a way that felt a little deep to the public, but alas
I love FN. It was my introduction to Dua. Just recently I picked.up RO. It didn't hit me hard at first, but to use your term, it was a grower. I like it a lot and some of the tracks are among my favorites from Dua. I finally just ordered her first record and it hasn't been delivered yet. I'm know I'm doing them out of order, but I'm looking forward to it. 👍
Completely agree with 99% of all that is said here (as I so often do with you honest). I would just say that Be The One showed me a glimmer of hope in an emerging artist, one which I largely put down to 'random songstress with a hit I love', then I mostly forgot about her as subsequent 'hits' were disappointing; fastforward and suddenly Future Nostalgia happened, and at such a strange time globally as you say, and everything weirdly and ranomly slotted into place. We know the rest...Expectations were huge for Radical Optimism, and while we are not talking 'flop' by any means, "regression to generic" hits the nail on the head. I and many of us soooo wanted and yearned to love the material, but the quality just isn't there. The brand has been watered down. The specialness and uniqueness has been vacuumed out, so your 'corporate' analogy is so very fitting...I'm inclined to think and hope that this will be a big learning curve for Dua and her (new poor choice of) management, who will take on board mistakes, analyse and move on. The world has seen and heard just how phenomenal she can be when the situations align...and we were and are gagging for more...but our patience does and will have a time limit...
Nothing was extraordinary about that album. She didn't transition herself into a new era. Look how Lady Gaga transition from "The Fame" to "The Fame Monster".
Dua said she recorded a ton of songs for RO. Some could’ve been psychedelic like she originally planned the album to be, but I believe she and her new team decided to choose the safest songs instead, causing a summer rebrand for the album - which was a huge mistake. She should’ve stayed with the FN team tbh.
Its one pop era where she didnt hit the mark but its fine if she didnt make it to the top, this is career progression. I have this feeling she will take it in her stride and make better music that will fill the market again, i still love alot of songs on this album is it my favourite from her no but its not a bad album. Every pop artist makes an album thats not gonna hit the mark but she can recover she has a big following across the globe and even if she doesn't do her thing state side anymore she still has a huge audience across the globe.
Dua still has huge public adoration, and anything next to future nostalgia was bound to look lesser than. But her so called "flop era" has been bigger than many main pop girl success eras. Though quieter culturally RO got more streams than Brat and brat ate DOWN this summer. We need to let her vacation and cook for a bit.
The album roll out is also very messy, potentially due to her new management. When she entered the future nostalgia era she promoted Don't Strat Now on almost every occasion she got, released single after single and the whole image just seem very consistent. With this one she dropped the lead single 7 months before the album release, and the promotional materials are just very inconsistent and uninspiring.
Radical Optimism had sooo much potential in terms of world building and opportunity for creative marketing but she just didn’t do any of that. She got pushback from the songs being too short, so she over corrected and released an extended version of the album but it was a miss, an over correction. I hope the next album is better.
To me I feel like her music lacks emotion. It's kind of like in the background party music not really a song everyone stops to listen to and vibe with.
Its funny cuz Plastic Hearts and Future Nostalgia had a huge impact back in 2020, and then with Endless Summer Vacation and Radical Optimism we can confirm that beachy albums are trash😂, they did the exact same. At least Miley had a huge hit with flowers
Bby are you stupid!?!? Have you ever heard her first album, “new love”, “last dance”, “no goodbyes”, and “be the one” she has a sound and a vibe.. in my opinion future nostalgia was her least artistic work there was a constant vision but the music itself was very mainstream dance pop/electric/disco.. I love her first album and I think Dua is better off being her authentic self and producing her own art instead of some mainstream trash lol
Well, I hate to break to you all, the 4th album curse has been pretty popular these days, Katy Perry Witness (Flopped), Nicki Minaj Queen (Didn't flop, but it wasn't successful), Avril Lavigne Goodbye Lullaby (Wasn't a flop, didn't succeed) and there are much more like Kanye West*, *Lady Gaga*, *Beyonce*, Could go on. I know *Dua* Didn't Flop with *Radical Optimism* THAT IS SUCH AN OVERSTATMENT, but She didn't get a success with it. So if her fourth album is any good, I would be very much surprised. Personally, *Future Nostalgia* became a pretty loved album for me, however, the era is over, and *Radical optimism* isn't getting any new listeners + it was honestly over the minute it started, in fact everyone has just left now because *Future Nostalgia* era is over. I think *radical optimism* has just slipped under the radar, and it hasn't even been looked at by the audience that looked at *Future Nostalgia* . Plus, *Future Nostalgia* had a huge bunch of singles, and now 3 Singles for this Album??? The Reason why *Future Nostalgia* blew up was because 2020 was a year of Lockdown, and people wanted to be happy and dance in their house, and get out of depression, and *Dua Lipa* *Future Nostalgia* did that. Also people blasted the Radio and Watched TikTok in 2020, which is why TikTok became soooo popular in 2020.. but I think she will probably fall under the lost pop girls like *Ava Max, Bebe Rexha*, and even though *Rita Ora* is basically a trash wannabe of *Bebe* and *Ava*, i guess she could slip in there.
i think it's a combination of different things: the world building was inconsistent, the impossible expectations set by future nostalgia and the amount of competition that's being released in 2024. i definitely blame it on the management change, in my opinion houdini was released way too early; to go back to the world building, she couldn't possibly go for a summer vibe in November, so she had to go with that grunge aesthetic and honestly, she probably should have sticked with that.(still love love love the album tho, being a huge dua fan)
So funny because today she is selling out and adding more dates to her Radical Optimism tour (she'll literally do 4 arena shows in LA) and she is playing stadiums in the UK. Her numbers were pretty fine worldwide and I just think Americans are too obsessed with Sabrina and Chappell right now to focus on another thing.
I love dua a lot, but i don’t feel the energy on Radical optimsim she gave on future nostalgia. I feel like that she isn’t into music that much anymore cause the imagine and aesthetics of the album is so boring

I thought her verse in prisoner was great, she should definitely do some pop rock, she has the vibes for it too imo

A very bad move for her.
houdini has a bit of psychedelic pop feel to it but I feel like there's not that much other moments where it feels like that
Someone mentioned in the other video that her label is unsure of releasing the experimental songs whereas she wanted to release it.

Tbh Sabrina and Chappel started trendimh AFTER radical optimism was released.
There were tons of pop girls during future nostalgia era so that means nothing. Also Taylor Swift isn’t a new pop star, she has been huge for over a decade and the tortured poets department didn’t have any big hits, it’s taylor’s least critically acclaimed album so again this comment makes no sense.

everyone has been talking about the album and ranking it which is even more impressive because it's a double album with 31 songs. the way she's been able to market music consistently and still hit heights really speaks to how well she's liked and how smart of a businesswoman she is.
fortnight is the lead single and therefore the most popular and it's hard not to hear it playing all the time. the eras tour helped boost some fan favourites. overall it's a great feat and something that other artists would kill to have.

To be honest Radical Optimism _is_ her weakest album to date.
RO also debuted at #1 in UK #2 in the US but no one talks about that
I actually really liked the album and I think people need to stop comparing it to Future Nostalgia tbh
I just think she failed to create a consistent aesthetic for this era, as well as more electro hits
Her music and fashion didn't evolve correctly.
I don't think this is 100% her fault. I don't think that anyone thought when Houdini came out that one of the most legendary rap beefs ever would happen at the same time that her album came out.
lol what are you trying to say? Rap beefs don't interfer in pop eras lol
???? Leave K Dot out of this, he and that beef had nothing to do with a popstars decline LOL
This is just not true. Pop has definitely been still here with acts like Sabrina and Chappell being able to push through amidst the Kendrick and Drake beef.
American artist's have the more personality.
Dua is a boring Brit.
Sade is a rare case.

AND they added additional U.S. tour dates as well.
She added 3 other Melbourne shows too
Tbh her fashion is bigger than her music I believe that’s where her money lies
you’re right she has a great street style
Why does no one talks about her vocal performance in each of her albums? I think vocally speaking, in Future Nostalgia, she couldn’t give her all. Cause the music took the absolute spot. She is not the star of the show, the music was. But in her 1st and 3rd, she gets to really sing, which I absolutely enjoy.
Unpopular opinion: everyone should be able to make music without having to try to make it successful
She must stick to her pop dance genre albums like Kylie Minogue but every time in between she must also releases experimental genre just to make a statement that she is versatile and will always be evergreen. Mind you this woman has a lot reserve songs in her little songbook that she brought to USA some times ago.
The album is amazing, and she’s not going anywhere 😎
9 yrs in the game with 3 albums but only 1 was good enough to show for it. That's crazy the fun pop bangers she's known for has now become something everyone is gearing towards e.g Sabrina and chapell so she doesn't stand out anymore

I actually like radial optimism, type of songs that will eventually climb. Which I think is smart in a way cause viral hits only last 2 seconds
So funny because today she is selling out and adding more dates to her Radical Optimism tour (she'll literally do 4 arena shows in LA) and she is playing stadiums in the UK.
