It’s amusing to see the clones described as a “cheaper” option as I don’t think I even heard the name Nintendo until I started collecting game magazines later on, everyone just vaguely called them “TV games”.

I feel like I played this for a couple of minutes back in the 90s. I think I remember a level set in a city/urban area and the armadillo ball seems familiar. A Chinese friend lent us his adapter and some import games for a couple of days, interesting to (maybe) see it again.
My friend had this game on a multicart, which we played on his bootleg NES (Famiclone). After he sold off his games to get a SNES, I spent a good time trying to find that game again with no success, but eventually found out about Armadillo. As luck would have it, not long after, a translation patch came out for it, so I could finally play it in English.

Not that the (non-Mario-branded) armadillo game was like astounding or anything, but it was kind of a cute looking concept. Seems it wasn't exactly meant to be like Sonic because the attempted physics looked like they were just more about rolling than crazy stunts, which makes sense for an armadillo character. If it actually controlled well it could probably be a fine little platformer.
Good luck covering all of these if that's what you intend to do, because they really went crazy with these Mario bootlegs. I believe they go all the way up to Mario 16 or 17, and each one is an extremely lazy hack of another game that does nothing more then change the title screen and the playable character to Mario. Certain ones also use the same number, so you may find two or more Mario 9's for example that are entirely different games.

It's probably impossible to talk about that without getting into the memes, but man, "GRAND DAD" was one of THE most annoyingly overused memes I was exposed to back somewhere in the mid-2010s

This reminds me of when my two kids were young in the 1980s and my wife had a rule: Nintendo games are like kids. They are to be seen and not heard. Mario music used to drive her crazy. We actually got a TV with an earphone jack to play Nintendo. Around 8pm I used to send the kids to bed, and they used to say "Not fair. It helps a lot of this stuff was pretty much locked up in territories like China and some other Asian countries that had limited access to video games except these kind of bootlegs, for various reasons. If you were really digging into ROM sites you'd probably come across some weird titles like that though.
M'lady the game looks neat, because in Super Mario 2, the mario gang was thrust into a whole new world with new enemies and landscapes, so why not have the fourth installment do the same thing ?

I've played that game too; it actually *is* called "Armadillo".
Chinese people are not allowed the meet anyone from the west just people from their country.

The numbering schemes on those bootleg games can be quite random. I remember Mario Bros 5 on the famiclone. It was just Bros 2 with the title changed.
