    There are sickles (blades) which are designed better, and better handles to make the work easier. Also, sickles are best used for close spaces, or times when you need to take your time in clearing/harvesting whatever you're doing. Scythes are better for larger spaces.

      I think of it like a weed whacker vs a lawn mower. If you compare the two on an open field, a weed whacker seems ridiculous. But if you need a weed whacker and don't have one, it's a godsend.

      Indeed, that isn't the traditional sickle shape he's using, and I'm fairly certain he's using it wrong as it's the least effective way of using the blade to cut with and wouldn't work on anything more robust than grasses. A sickle was used in particular for herb collection, to cut what you wanted and not damage what you didn't want to cut, I was hoping to find a video showing some proper techniques, but even with only basic knowledge from books I know he's using it wrong.
      Not only is the technique wrong, he's using it for the wrong purpose, and then feels it's a bad tool. It's a bit like brushing the driveway with a toothbrush and proclaiming that it's a useless tool.

    Love my brush scythe for clearing briars. I hated the weed whacker, and it couldn't cut as well as the scythe anyway. Someone stole it and I say good riddance. Oh, teenage son likes the scythe due to coolness factor.

  • @jibberoverjava
    @jibberoverjava 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I was researching why the Bible said sickle and not scythe so I looked up the differences and your video showed up so I watched it and you summed it up so beautifully... You said with a sickle you can be far more discriminating and selective not getting the dandelions, weeds, with the wheat. Jesus mentioned this frequently and I can see how God is meticulous in his searching out sincere hearts. And you are right the preaching is not easy it's meticulous and hard on us at times but we're not looking for the masses in doing God's work the easy way, the angels that direct our preaching work are following God's command to search for those who are groaning over the detestable things that are being done in the Earth. Remember the - Angels being obedient - the next time someone knocks on your door.
    Thank you for this really great video!

    4:19 scythes are HANDS DOWN faster than brushcutters, with very few exceptions.
    If clearing around fence posts or guard rails, the insensitive brush cutter can cut at the base from every angle making progress faster. If working in a place where no infernal human has penetrated the soil with steel and concrete, there is absolutely no use for brushcutters.

    One of my friends text me and said “God just showed this to me so I wanted to share it with you as it makes so much sense. Maybe it will help you look at things a little different.--- IF WE DON'T STOP USING OUR SICKLES ON EACH OTHER, WE'RE GOING TO MISS THE HARVEST.” So I got on TH-cam your video is the first one I came across one wanting to know some things about a sickle in the natural realm. But you said something which struck me in the spiritual realm it was this “…So wheat and tears, if you’re doing it with a sickle, it’s not that bad separating them once you’re in the field”.
    You see, I’m having some difficulty with the leader ship in our church because they simply are not leading, but as you have said and my friend, if I am in the field of harvest then I am paying attention to what is truly important.
    Thanks so much for your video. you have a new subscriber ; )

  • @OctoBocto

    So a sickle is like a paintbrush and a scythe is like a paint roller. The sickle is quite terrible at cutting lots of wheat efficiently but it's great for just cut out small pesky areas or cutting around things you want to cut. (Like a paintbrush!) While on the other hand, scythes are very efficient with cutting wheat but it struggles with small areas and it's not ideal if you have to cut around things. (Just like a roller!)

    The string trimmer has replaced the scythe for weeding large areas (in the first world). I still see a use for a sickle in the garden, though. It can clear weeds and vines out of your way in small, harder to reach places. For example, I have some large plants that my string trimmer can’t reach under.

    You should check out the American style scythe. There's less maintenance, because the blades are made with hardened steel. This means it holds an edge longer, so you hone less often, and you don't peen, you grind the edge in ( probably 2 - 3 times a year ). fortytwoblades and mr. chickadee have some great information on them, and mr. chickadee even compares them to that european style I saw in this video and explains how they are different. Also, your technique IS rough, lol. You're working too hard, which tells me the blade is either not sharp enough, or peened thin enough.

    Filmed in Provo Utah... (Little Baldy and Mtn Timp in the background).. side note: it's chronocentric to think less convenience means a shorter life. Past humans had better muscular and cardiovascular health than us -- (compare modern athletes to ancient athletes) it's just that they got wiped out by more tribal conflicts and plagues -- In sum; a greater percentage of modern humans live longer but ancient human individuals were vastly superior physically, I mean when the last time you ran down a deer or walked to SLC? (I never have;)

    • @GoodandBasic
      @GoodandBasic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In general, I like your premise that ancient people were amazing, rather than the deeply troubling view that they were somehow weaker and less clever than we are. In some senses they were certainly more active, and thus physically and cognitively more useful than the average couch-potato.
      However, I'd be curious as to how you got an ancient athlete to compare with, outside of written records and inferences from bones that is. People are amazing and are very good at dealing with adversity, but the child mortality stats alone justify more than a bit of chronocentrism. JB

    • @RMLLcrazy
      @RMLLcrazy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      While they were more active, they were largely enduring diets that were very much carbo hydrate based, without many sources of protein. That's why they were way shorter, on average, than modern people.
