I use Fabriano Tela Oil Paper, and it works really well with acrylics and oil. Its also vegan-friendly (cruelty-free) and there is no need to prime it. I also use it for oil pastels. I am based in Austria (Europe), and after trying out a small Tela Oil Paper pad, I purchased two 1.5m x 10m rolls from an online store (kreativ.de) for under 60 euros (per roll) last year. The roll allows me to cut custom size sheets, and its very cost-effective. For example, an A4 sized sheet from my roll would cost me 27 cents (each roll based on the surface area of the roll would yield 240 A4 sheets). The paper has two sides: canvas textured (topside) and smooth (reverse side). I really like the textured canvas feel of the paper, and as it is somewhat difficult to find vegan-friendly and cruelty-free canvas, I am so glad that I found this Tela Oil Paper.
If you heat the tape with a hairdryer as you go along removing it , it peels without tearing the border. Trial and error I learned this working outside and the sun would heat the tape and peel off easy. I’ve enjoyed your tutorials immensely and have garnered little gems of info. Thanks. Martha
hi, did u try oils on them? Im wanting to paint impasto oil on paper... and am wondering if both papers cud take very thick paint and be permanently long lasting too? Yeah massive difference in price like u say! thanks for vid
Impasto oil wouldn’t be advised for papers because the surface is subject to bending much more often than anything stretched on a frame or just a hard surfaces. It really depends on how thick you want to go though. It’s been fine with a good swipe of oil from a brush/knife but wouldn’t really trust it for anything thicker. Also, depending on the color and brand, thicker applications lead to oil bleeds either on the sides of the color or the back.
There should be no problem with thick layers as long as the paper is mounted onto a rigid support like a wood panel or ACP. It is safer to add a couple of layers of acrylic gesso. The gesso acts as an extra barrier to protect the paper from oils which is what causes degradation over time. I have my doubts with Pittura because I have seen oil stains at the back after a while when I didn't prime it with gesso even when I wasn't painting thickly. Arches oil paper seems to have better sizing and it's made of pure cotton which gives it extra strength. You should always do your own tests.
Ah ...no but its fine.. as long as you use a delicate tape, if anything the tape finds it harder to stay put..it peels away on oil paintings if you leave it over time. The Arches has a nicer 'feel' its softer? If I wanted to have a white border I'd probably use the Arches, but if you just want to paint and mount on panels, as I do its perfect...and much cheaper!

I like that one too! The canvas side tends to tear with tape though. Also Canson Figuras is good.😃

what was the conclusion on the pittura was it suitable for oils?
Hi, Yes.. but the tape ripped the paper. The Arches is a smoother surface but the Pittura is cheaper!

Hope that helped a little!

Did you end up filming the oil and tear test? I can't find it..
Thanks

I bought some Fabriano a few months ago and loved it for oil and cold wax! Looking forward to seeing what you think!😊
Not had a chance to continue..someone said it may leak through..which will be a problem if gluing down..😉
I was checking out papers on Jackson's last night...
thats what started it.the Arches has been out of stock for weeks..
Ceiling fan of death.
