@@bianca.phdinprogress No need to. ^^ If one wants to find good Japanese Anki decks, one just has to look for them. Great video again btw! :D
Thanks for the comment!! I’m sure it’ll help out our Japanese learning friends :) are those decks also structured as sentence cards? I'm also interested in making flashcard for cantonese (include yale phonetic and pronunciation). Thank you.
Hi Bianca, thank you so much for you magnanimous endeavours. You mention a link to a pdf version of the HSK textbooks which will be really useful but I could not spot it.
Hi Bianca, Thank you very much for creating and sharing this amazing deck! I would like to learn how you created it. This must be quite a process. Can you please share your card creation in Anki process in next videos? Thank you!
Thanks for the comment! I’m not sure if that would be an interesting video since I literally just typed down all of the sentences in the textbooks into an excel document, batch imported the pinyin, classified the chapter and card type as a tag, and uploaded them into anki as a CSV file. Then I went in an added all of the audio using the AwesomeTTS add on to every single card. While adding the character and sentence audio, I also double checked that all the imported fields of the card was correct. After all the content of the cards was done, I made the card layout and formatting depending on their focus type! Overall it was a really tedious and repetitive process HAHHA. I would not recommend making so many cards in as quick of a time as I did across 4 textbooks XD
I’ll be doing book reviews in a few videos (got a few others in the pipeline first). But I did review all of the available books on my website! Currently it’s a review of book series, but I’ll be doing an in-depth HSK1 review in a week on there! biancalearns.wordpress.com/
Thank you for this deck! I have a little issue though, the default setting is that it adds cards in the order of when they were added so now I only get all the „listening“ cards and not the others…
thank you so much!!! There's an amazing Anki add-on called AwesomeTTS. It'll add audio to whatever Chinese you have (or other languages) and you can select what voice you want! If you pay for a small subscription they have higher quality audio, but you can also just use the free version!
So yes you spoke about this in the video. The fact we only get a translation for the vocab and not the full sentence. I’m just having a hard time knowing if I’m right or wrong. Because In the context of the specific words I think it’s saying something but then google/dict says something completely different. So I just wish there was a cheat sheet just to know If I’m right or wrong.
So that’s why studying where the sentences from an anki deck come from is super important. A sentence is great, but sometimes, you need the context of the paragraph or the story it was in to help fill in those gaps. For example, if you saw this sentence in an anki deck, it may be a bit confusing: “And then I hopped on a train and passed out”. You can look up every work and get the gist of what’s happening, but it would be easier to understand it in context of a larger story. “I got off work late today and couldn’t wait to go home. I was just so tired! So I walked towards the train station. And then I hopped on a train and passed out. Luckily, I woke up right before my stop!” So if you can, learn sentences in context of larger stories. If you do that, when you see that sentence in anki, oftentimes you’ll remember what story it came from and can use those clues to fill in the gaps!!! :)
Dear Bianca, your created deck is awesome. Thank you for sharing it with us. Although I'm too confused with putting in the stroke order and Chinese audio! Can you please explain how to create a card that has both stroke order and audio?
what type of deck would you like to see me make? creating a deck is actually really simple with Anki. You just add content to the front of a card and the back of the card. it get's more complicated when you're looking to add personalized features. I would recommend to look at other decks that are available and see what they put into each card so you can decide for yourself what is the best information to put into your own deck!
@@bianca.phdinprogress I just like create my own Chinese deck for communication at work. But I don't know how to add instructions on how to write kanji, add pronunciation for vocabulary and example sentences in each card like you
Hello Bianca! Thank you so much :) This surely the best HSK deck in the internet! Just a quick question though: did you first work through the chapters (say, HSK 1 chapter 1) and then do the flashcards? Or did you learn directly with the deck? If anyone else is reading this and has tried it, what would you recommend?
From her explanations, she first goes through the chapter in the textbook, then enables the relevant cards for review (she explains how to do it in this clip). She doesn't think Anki is a good tool for learning, only for reviewing learned content.
@MyOrangeString is correct! I would recommend working through the chapter first and maybe even going through it a few times until you feel fairly comfortable with the characters. Then you can add them to your Anki deck by unsuspending that chapter. If you do it this way, it removes a huge burden off the Anki system where you don't need to learn the words out of context, and can actually recall the word/sentence from the dialogue for easier retention!
Thank you so much. However I experienced the audio was cut short at the beginning. They are always missing the first 1-2 words of the sentence. Any suggestion to fix this issue?
This is amazing, thank you so much. I just have a question, would you recommend starting with reading and then listening? Im starting at HSK 1 and want to know if thats an ok order. Additionally is it good to immerse yourself in chinese shows if youre still beginner
I would say, do whatever keeps you learning. if you want to immerse and watch tv shows as a beginner, then go for it! but I would definitely recommend reading and listening at the same time. listening will be one of the harder skills to pick up, so the earlier you familiarize yourself with the tones, the easier it'll be to get better at it!
Thanks, but the stroke order is not working on ankidroid. Ans, why are listening reading and writing cards not in the separate sub decks? That would make it easy to control what type of cards you wat to study/review...
Hi Bianca! first of, THANKS A MILLION ! How to add pls“type in answer “ field on the whole cards of the deck at once without impacting the note type, because I tried to change the note type through “ change the note type “ to basic type in answer/writing. But I find it changes completely the deck and some fields were deleted Ps: is that possible? without changing it on every each card Thanks in advance!
I just figured it out, and it's sooo SIMPLE. for those who want to practice TYPING in chinese with pinyin: 1 change your keybord language to simplified chinese 2 click "Browse" on Anki 3 look for HSK 1-4 deck then choose randomly a card that has "Writing note tag" 4 click on "Cards..." situated in the middle of "Fields..." and "Preview" 5 on the front template of the card copy/paste {{type:Sentence}} below {{hint:English Definition}} when you click on Save, the 'type in answer' will be automatically done on all the cards with " writing tags" only TADAA
Thank you so much, Bianca; your deck is amazing. I have one question... In your deck, in the first three chapters, you added the word "book" and "this." Why did you add these ones if they weren't mentioned in the dialogues?
there's a tutorial on how to edit these cards and make cards in the middle of the video, but I also have another video about an Anki card demo that you can watch for a more detailed explanation about generating Anki cards! If you want another video about that let me know and I can make one!
Hey Bianca, I think you attended a language program I worked at as a bilingual assistant. Glad to see you are continuing your language journies. I was wondering if you could give further direction on where to find the correct code to add the hanzi animation on Anki. I went to the site and tried one of the codes, but I think it needs to be adjusted. I see they have a quiz code that lets you draw the character with your finger without an outline. Your help will be greatly appreciated! On a side note, I am currently studying at a Chinese school in China. It has been quite a struggle to keep up with the course but also take the time needed to test out and create effective study habits. My program kind of just totally skipped Hanzi so the Western folks have been on their own. :/ I am trying to switch things up now to catch up. Also ....redoing all of your cards :O I am sure it has helped a lot of people.
Hi robert!!! I got my specific code from the hanzi writer website and didn't do any adjustments to it (just copy pasted into anki). the specific code I used can be found in the cards all the way at the end so you can cross-reference there! if you're trying to use the code that gives you a written quiz, that would be something you should ask the developers of the original code about! what I did for my cards was basically just plug and chug various chunks of code until I got the result I wanted. there may need to be a bit of finagling to get the quiz you want, but all of the code components should be available on the developer's website listed below! here's their website explaining the usage of different parts of the code: hanziwriter.org/docs.html the code for integrating the quizzes is copy pasted below (formatting may be an issue but its also in the link I shared earlier): var writer = HanziWriter.create('character-target-div', '码', { width: 150, height: 150, showCharacter: false, padding: 5 }); writer.quiz({ onMistake: function(strokeData) { console.log('Oh no! you made a mistake on stroke ' + strokeData.strokeNum); console.log("You've made " + strokeData.mistakesOnStroke + " mistakes on this stroke so far"); console.log("You've made " + strokeData.totalMistakes + " total mistakes on this quiz"); console.log("There are " + strokeData.strokesRemaining + " strokes remaining in this character"); }, onCorrectStroke: function(strokeData) { console.log('Yes!!! You got stroke ' + strokeData.strokeNum + ' correct!'); console.log('You made ' + strokeData.mistakesOnStroke + ' mistakes on this stroke'); console.log("You've made " + strokeData.totalMistakes + ' total mistakes on this quiz'); console.log('There are ' + strokeData.strokesRemaining + ' strokes remaining in this character'); }, onComplete: function(summaryData) { console.log('You did it! You finished drawing ' + summaryData.character); console.log('You made ' + summaryData.totalMistakes + ' total mistakes on this quiz'); } });
Your decks are very impressive :'), thank you so much for sharing🥰. Could you spend a littile more time to show everyone how to put in the stroke order and the chinese audio. This would mean the world to me because I'm struggling with that :((. Thank you for reading. Sorry if I make any mistakes, I'm bad at English :((

glad it's helpful!! I added a link, but I think it got removed unfortunately .-.
Wow thank you so much for your effort!!! Much appreciated!!!🤩🤩🤩
you're welcome!!
Thank you so much for your hard work!
thank you for watching!!!
Your channel is simply perfect. :)

你好 I'm soo glad you're back!! please do the HSK 1 book review next😅
I’ll be doing book reviews in a few videos (got a few others in the pipeline first). But I did review all of the available books on my website!
Currently it’s a review of book series, but I’ll be doing an in-depth HSK1 review in a week on there!

Thank you so much this is fantastic.
hopefully it's helpful!!
Thank you for this deck! I have a little issue though, the default setting is that it adds cards in the order of when they were added so now I only get all the „listening“ cards and not the others…
You can fix the character audio without moving the html tag by adding "defer" (without the quotes) after
Thank you thank you so much!!!
you're welcome :)
Thanks for your card
This is awesome!! thank you so much😭
I’m glad you enjoyed it!! :)
I really love this deck. I’m using it for my hsk 1 & 2 characters now that I have started hsk 3. How did you add the audio if I may ask
thank you so much!!!
For example, if you saw this sentence in an anki deck, it may be a bit confusing:
“And then I hopped on a train and passed out”.
You can look up every work and get the gist of what’s happening, but it would be easier to understand it in context of a larger story.
“I got off work late today and couldn’t wait to go home. I was just so tired! So I walked towards the train station. And then I hopped on a train and passed out. Luckily, I woke up right before my stop!”
So if you can, learn sentences in context of larger stories.
Can you please explain how to create a card that has both stroke order and audio?
hi! thank u so so much for all the work you’ve put into creating these flashcards
YOURE AMAZING
aww thank you!!! appreciate it hehehe :)
This is really awesome, thank you so much!
You’re welcome!!! Glad it was helpful!
my god you are a angel
glad it's helpful :))
I would like to create my own Chinese deck. Please make a video with this content. Thanks
what type of deck would you like to see me make? creating a deck is actually really simple with Anki.
But I don't know how to add instructions on how to write kanji, add pronunciation for vocabulary and example sentences in each card like you
you're a genius!
Aww you’re too kind!
Gracias Bianca :D
thank you for watching!!!
Thanks for this video and the Anki deck! Absolutely incredible. I am wondering where I can find the link for the free PDF version?
you can find the pdf of the HSK textbooks on google!
非常感谢,这太棒了!
Thank you so much
no problem :) hope it's helpful!!
This is amazing, thank you so much. I just have a question, would you recommend starting with reading and then listening? Im starting at HSK 1 and want to know if thats an ok order. Additionally is it good to immerse yourself in chinese shows if youre still beginner
I would say, do whatever keeps you learning. if you want to immerse and watch tv shows as a beginner, then go for it! but I would definitely recommend reading and listening at the same time. listening will be one of the harder skills to pick up, so the earlier you familiarize yourself with the tones, the easier it'll be to get better at it!
such great videos
Thank you so much :)
But I find it changes completely the deck and some fields were deleted
Ps: is that possible? without changing it on every each card
Thanks in advance!
I just figured it out, and it's sooo SIMPLE.
for those who want to practice TYPING in chinese with pinyin:
1 change your keybord language to simplified chinese
2 click "Browse" on Anki
3 look for HSK 1-4 deck then choose randomly a card that has "Writing note tag"
4 click on "Cards..." situated in the middle of "Fields..." and "Preview"
5 on the front template of the card copy/paste {{type:Sentence}} below {{hint:English Definition}}
when you click on Save, the 'type in answer' will be automatically done on all the cards with " writing tags" only TADAA
Thanks for figuring that out!!!!
Thank you so much, Bianca; your deck is amazing.
I have one question...
In your deck, in the first three chapters, you added the word "book" and "this."
Why did you add these ones if they weren't mentioned in the dialogues?
Am I just blind, or? I can't find the PDFs mentioned at 4:10
i love your video
thank you!!! I really appreciate it!!! :)
can you make a detailed video how you made these cards, i also want to make cards
there's a tutorial on how to edit these cards and make cards in the middle of the video, but I also have another video about an Anki card demo that you can watch for a more detailed explanation about generating Anki cards! If you want another video about that let me know and I can make one!
@@bianca.phdinprogress ok
Hey Im new to anki and just started learning chinese. is there a way to only get the vocab from hsk1?
Where can I download Ms? I visit your blog but I couldn't find the link there. Please help.
Hi robert!!! I got my specific code from the hanzi writer website and didn't do any adjustments to it (just copy pasted into anki). the specific code I used can be found in the cards all the way at the end so you can cross-reference there! if you're trying to use the code that gives you a written quiz, that would be something you should ask the developers of the original code about! what I did for my cards was basically just plug and chug various chunks of code until I got the result I wanted. there may need to be a bit of finagling to get the quiz you want, but all of the code components should be available on the developer's website listed below!
here's their website explaining the usage of different parts of the code: hanziwriter.org/docs.html
the code for integrating the quizzes is copy pasted below (formatting may be an issue but its also in the link I shared earlier):
var writer = HanziWriter.create('character-target-div', '码', {
width: 150,
height: 150,
showCharacter: false,
padding: 5
});
writer.quiz({
onMistake: function(strokeData) {
console.log('Oh no! you made a mistake on stroke ' + strokeData.strokeNum);
console.log("You've made " + strokeData.mistakesOnStroke + " mistakes on this stroke so far");
console.log("You've made " + strokeData.totalMistakes + " total mistakes on this quiz");
console.log("There are " + strokeData.strokesRemaining + " strokes remaining in this character");
},
onCorrectStroke: function(strokeData) {
console.log('Yes!!! You got stroke ' + strokeData.strokeNum + ' correct!');
console.log('You made ' + strokeData.mistakesOnStroke + ' mistakes on this stroke');
console.log("You've made " + strokeData.totalMistakes + ' total mistakes on this quiz');
console.log('There are ' + strokeData.strokesRemaining + ' strokes remaining in this character');
},
onComplete: function(summaryData) {
console.log('You did it! You finished drawing ' + summaryData.character);
console.log('You made ' + summaryData.totalMistakes + ' total mistakes on this quiz');
}
});
@@bianca.phdinprogress great! Thank you so much!!
No problem!! Glad I could help :)
Your decks are very impressive :'), thank you so much for sharing🥰. Could you spend a littile more time to show everyone how to put in the stroke order and the chinese audio. This would mean the world to me because I'm struggling with that :((. Thank you for reading. Sorry if I make any mistakes, I'm bad at English :((
i'll be making a video dedicated to making anki decks and including that as a section!! hopefully in the next few weeks :)
@@bianca.phdinprogress After watching carefully videos and download your amazing decks, I now can create a card that has both audio and stroke order. Thanks a million, you have saved me this semester ❤️
somehow it does not work...just have the over 4000 cards and cannot choose what I want to do. Maybe I'm using the wrong app.
Thanx again for all your efforts helping us newbies get good systems for starting out. My biggest problem has been to know where to start and what books/apps to use on a daily basis. Your videos are u s e f u l and v a l u a b l e for this purpose. Go!
thank you!!!!
I’ll be doing book and app reviews in the future, but it’ll definitely take time to review each available book and app (also don’t want my channel to just be a review channel).
I would recommend checking my website for all the resources that I found when I started out up until now with reviews and other explanations!! It’s meant to be a one stop shop for anything “how to learn a language” (especially Chinese because that’s what I’m learning right now!). I’ll be updating with new posts regularly!
Got app, textbook, graded reader, podcasts, and website reviews for Chinese! And some posts about how to go about learning any language, and one specifically for Chinese!
