A good idea is to fasten the front door seatbelts through the inside handle and then into the fastener. Doors can’t be opened as easy from outside incase someone trys.
Hi Jill. Thanks. Good suggestion. Never tried that. My concern could be feeling trapped/or being delayed in an emergency, although I’d still have the side door if I needed to exit. Increased van door security is already something high on my priorities though. Thanks for the tip 👍🏻
Came across your channel as I’ve been looking for tips to dare go solo after my partner decide he isn’t as into van life as he first imagined! Starting your videos from the start and love to see your confidence has grown and you’re very inspiring!❤
Hi Sue, another great open and honest vlog, and I take my hat off to you for your confidence as a solo female, it can be quite nerve racking at times for both male or female as a solo wild camper, but the freedom is what we need to move 'onward' I love the little plaque behind you, dedicated to Bri with very true words reflecting that our loved ones are always with us, even on our solo adventures. Safe travels and take care. Bazza
Hi Bazza I hope you’re doing well moving ‘onward’ and getting out in the van. I love having that plaque in the van wherever I go, the words do say it all don’t they. Take good care, Sue.
Hi Sue just found you site via Get away Geese, I’ve never wild camped as a solo but often go to campsites. I really enjoyed this video and I am going to catch up with your previous videos 👋👋👋
Hiya Susan👋 That’s fab, I’m glad you’ve found my little channel and hope thet you enjoy the vlogs. They’re temporarily delayed at the moment due to a computer issue which is dragging on a bit. Glad to hear you’re also getting out in the van solo 🙌🏻. I like to mix both wild and campsites, and the odd pub stop too. Safe travels to you 😊
I've only just started watching your channel. I just wanted to say thank you, watched a few of your adventures and loved them. You keep doing what you're doing, you're an inspiration ❤️❤️
Hiya, thanks for leaving this comment its very much appreciated. I'm glad you enjoy the channel content its been a learning curve but I enjoy it and will definitely continue. In fact I'm just planning the next trip! ATB, Sue x
Me and the missus admire how yougot back out there after your husband died. We do like to wild camp but it's one thing as a couple and quite another thing going it alone. Well done and ONWAAAARD Sue!
Thanks for the supportive comment! I’m glad to hear that you also enjoy wild camping. Bri would be surprised I’m doing it solo ❤️ I’m quite surprised myself! Happy and safe travels to you.
I reckon a ridgemonkey pan would make a good clonker too! I, of course have form with this. It was a plastic saucepan and I was 5 and my poor sister was 7. I know how to clonk! She’s never forgotten! 🤣🙈 I’m the same as you for many things. Only thing which worries me wild camping is my dog wanting a wee in the middle of the night. Can I just say, and not meaning to upset you, that your tribute plaque for Bri is lovely. Made my eyes leak. ❤️🤗
Ah thank you, that doesn’t upset me at all. I look at the plaque every night before lights out and first thing every morning when out in the van. I feel he’s with me always 🙂. Your poor sister … but thanks for the tip haha. Obviously I’m not condoning clonking 😂
Thanks , great tips and ideas & I think you are spot on about our imaginations! I am always baffled when people say “your’re brave going on your own” …. other people’s imaginations are far more concerned than mine that’s for sure. Thanks again, love your channel.
Thanks very much Diane. I agree, when people say I’m brave I know that I’m not, I’m just pursuing what I enjoy like anyone else. Friends & family have worried for me more than I ever will. Happy & safe travels to you 😊
I think out possible uses for the everyday items in the van too and keep them easily to hand because although we can’t carry weapons with intent, we can use “reasonable force” to protect ourselves and there are plenty of things to help us with that.
Love watching your vlogs, you are very down to earth and have a fantastic sense of humour. We are currently doing the South West Coast 300 and have just watched your Grey Mares Trail vlog so we decided to come and try a wild camp for the very first time. Views are spectacular and looking forward to seeing all the stars tonight. Hope the sheep don't knock us up in the middle of the night😂
Ah, thanks Graeme! I bet the SWC300 is amazing. For your first wild camp I reckon Grey Mares will be perfect. Campervans are very welcome there. Have a great night, chill out and let the sheep rock you to 😴 😊
Good to see you again, Sue. I'm a solo male campervaner, and I found your tips very useful. You are right, if your gut tells you something is not right, move on. I must admit at the moment I do feel happier if there is another van nearby. I'm just starting my 2nd year solo, and I absolutely love it, it gives me something to focus on. 👍
Hi Simon. It’s always nice to have another van somewhere in sight. When I was at the grey mare’s tail I was really surprised to be completely alone! Glad you’re enjoying it. Take care and safe travels.
“There is strength in numbers “ we only park on sites , I would rather pay and be safe and secure. But, having said that I don’t feel comfortable too close to forests or woods. When you parked up iN that isolated place where the wild goats are in Scotland , no way would I camp there , not because of people attacking but I find it too eerie. I thought blimey your brave Sue . 9:33
Great video with excellent common sense advice. I’ve just done NC 500 in a hire van mostly off grid / wild camping and as a solo female newbie I used all the knowledge I’d gained from your channel and others like Getaway Geese. I would never have done it without seeing you do it first so keep up the good work I’m sure I’m not the only one gaining confidence by following your example. Scotland was amazing I can’t wait to go back hopefully in my own van in the autumn. Happy travels x
That’s fantastic to hear Debbie, well done getting out there. I’m glad I’ve managed to help provide some inspiration. There are a lot of us solo females out there in vans and vanlife is such a supportive community isn’t it. Hope you get your own van soon and can get back out there. Happy and safe travels 😊 x
Hi Sue. All great sensible advice and lots of good points I had not thought of. The name on your hotspot a good example. Just about to pick up my first van and aim to do 50/50 campsite to wild camping especially in Scotland as a solo male traveller. Whilst I completely agree travelling as a solo female may seem more concerning, all your advice has been taken onboard as all the issues you touch on have put me off in the past contemplating wild camping. I am now about to take the plunge as you put solo travelling into perspective as a safe and enjoyable pastime with a few safeguards put in place. Thanks for the reassurance and so looking forward to getting out on the road. Just discovered the channel and love your content and thanks for sharing your adventures they are inspirational! I will look forward to my “Arran Breckie” when I get to Arran. “safe travels”👍
Hi there 👋 and thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I’m glad I’ve helped with reassurance for solo wild camping. I think it’s an amazing experience and hope you find it so too. As for the Arran brekkie, Mmmmmm! 🐷 😋 👍🏻
Hi Sue. Sound, common sense advice! I used to wild camp a lot and only had 2 worrying occasions... both were scary at the time, but it transpires I wasn't actually under threat as such... one time I inadvertently parked in a place where people "meet up" let's say. At night. To meet other like minded people. It was quite chilling at the time. Bizarrely, since having my dog we haven't wild camped... we only been on sites. He isn't prepared to rough it! Hope you're well. Love this vid.
Ah right, an, erm dogging site! I can imagine the fear it would create. Puts me in mind of the hilarious Peter Kay/Sian Gibson ‘Car Share’ scene though 🤣
@@CamperVanya Yes. Quite scary at the time. To be fair, the police kept driving past throughout the night, which was reassuring on the one hand, but I didn't want to get arrested as part of the doggers. Not seen the Peter Kay dogging bit, but a lot of people talk about it.
Great video Sue. Spot on with all you have said. Covered everything. And totally agree. Our own imagination is our own worst enemy. Definitely feel safe while wild camping, especially in Scotland. Take Care
We always try to scope a park up out in daylight and then go back to it later if possible. We don't like turning up somewhere in the dark. Some useful tips there Sue, not just for solo travellers. Gut instinct is the best. We have turned up to planned places that have been recommended on P4N but then we have turned up and it hasn't felt right. xx
Yes to scoping beforehand and returning later 👍🏻 Glad it was useful. I know you’re experienced wild campers and so I appreciate the feedback from you. Have a great weekend xx
Wise words as always (pre wine 😂) clonk is now Emilys favourite word!! By the way I thought you had bagpipes behind your driver's seat before I realised they were walking poles. Catch up soon xx

Thank you for the info, I’ve taken it all onboard! We’ve only done a couple of wild camps in the back of the works van, but I wanted to experience it. I did have to settle my imagination down a bit. I’m saving for a camper and will be heading out alone when I finally get it. All really good tips from your experience. X
Fabulous Common sense. Something I do is share my location on Google maps with my daughters. They then know where I am at all times. And of course I have my trusty companion Bella. She always lets me know if something is not right... Great video. Happy camping 🥰
Hi Mags, thanks for watching & commenting. We’re similar in our set ups and behaviours. These little things certainly add to confidence when out and about solo don’t they. Happy & safe travels 😊 x
@CamperVanya - Solo Van Life UK I have family in Mayo and Wexford. However I am taking Mum on a memory tour for her. Sailing from Stranraer to Larne. Then Sailing home Dublin to Holyhead. A couple of weeks of travelling.
This is just so useful Sue. When we get our van, we won’t be used to staying out in remote places and we will look back on your tips here. A fantastic reference point for others from someone who has been there and got the t shirt. Plus we will see if we can find any of those martial arts classes for Clonk😃 Brilliant vid 👍👏👏👍👏🙏👏👏👍
great advice sue for all we have a torch its so powerfull if you shine it in someones eyes there blind for about 30 seconds sheep and cows always brushing van and horses on dartmore we were awoken one night on a camp site by a blood curdling noise you will not believe what it was two hedghohs mating at the back off our tent i told the grand kids not to worry its just the wombles lol all the best safe travels donny xx
🤣🤣 I can’t tell you how glad I am that I haven’t encountered any mating hedgehogs (yet!). I forgot to mention the blinding shining of a torch, so thanks for that 👍🏻 Take care x
Hari OM All good stuff and pretty much common sense! I'll be applying that soon enough... I committed to buying a van yesterday! Ford E-Transit. The YAMster will soon be on the road (after building out the interior - or maybe even during!) YAM xx
Hi Yam! I’m all for good, solid, common sense too. Great news re the van (great name too!). Hope you’re soon in the road with it and enjoying safe travels 🚐 xx
Good point, about fuel. We never have less than half a tank of diesel, in the van.. Talking about moving from a dodgy location.....the times we have moved from a place that turned out to be dodgy....As you say....if the red flag goes up, move first, as last... People in cars, acting oddly.... Just move... - Dawn x
Some really sound advice Sue. We both think you are a star going to all the places you go and we keep saying we must try wild camping. I have been a bit nervous about wild camping given some of the problems folks have had where vans aren’t welcome. I try and avoid hassle as get enough of that at work in the week 😂 I would love to try it but want to get an outstanding job of CCTV fitted first for that extra peace of mind. Some great tips and advice, hopefully soon we will brave it as we are inspired at the beautiful places you visit. I would quite happily wild camp on Arran (away from the towns) Have a fantastic weekend, all the very best, David & Rachel 👍
Thanks for your lovely words. I only really like to stay where I know I’m welcome around towns, just wish there were more such places. Arran was a breeze for wild camping, perfect. I’ll look forward to hearing about your CCTV if you get it, it’s something I’ve thought of too. Happy and safe travels to you both 😊
@@CamperVanya Arran is lovely , even I would feel safe parking anywhere in Arran . We stay at Seal Bay though . We keep saying we will go somewhere else other than Scotland 🏴. But when it comes down to it Scotland calls you. Those Swans on the gentle sea waters at Arran are beauty personified.
@@xvsupremacy7190 I'm exactly the same as you, I keep saying I will visit somewhere else next but Scotland in a campervan is so hard to beat! Happy travels 👍
Great Advice Sue, we have rule 1, which means if one of us is uncomfortable, usually me, we move on. David always has a few extra spots in case our chosen one is busy or we don't like it... thanks for the great video, hope you are well and out and about enjoying the spring weather.. one day sunny next day wet up here anyways. Take care my friend xx
That was so useful, thanks very much. I'm single and passed Gods use by date, so I need as much help as I can get. 😅 One question I can't get to the bottom of is - park up, plenty of space around you, in the morning, a camper right next to you with still plenty of space available....naught as queer as folk! Carry on enjoying your camping and waiting for your next vlog.
Not a good idea to have “weapons” of any sort in a van but I used to keep a can of Raljex in the cupboard above the sliding door. I did suffer from cramp so it was needed and it smelt dreadful if accidentally sprayed on clothes. You have to be very careful not to get it near to eyes as it can cause temporary blindness. Another trick is to record a large dog barking on your phone and play it back repeatedly as needed.
Oh I like the recording idea Weapons with intent is a definite no-no isn’t it, so we do have to get creative with the possibilities of our everyday on board items!
Hiya Sue - very useful vlog and you're totally right to say that it's not just females that will feel nervous - I'm not ready to go out yet, but I know that when my car/van is ready I am going to be terrified, Just like you though, my mantra since Patrick died has been "the worst thing that could happen to me has happened and so I can cope with anything less than that." All the safety tips were very useful - my router at home and my bluetooth name is a version of 'PSNI Car 3' (Police Service of Northern Ireland) to hopefully keep naughty people at bay...mind you if I were as lucky as you clearly are to have a manic xylophone player secured under the bed I would fear naught! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Wishing you a lovely weekend. I am heading out in a few minutes foir a little drive and I'll take a few pics to share - this new project is really helping me. C xx
Hi Colin I’m glad things are going well for you. Can’t beat a good project to occupy a busy mind can you ❤️. Love your Bluetooth theme! I know you’ll get fully the “when the worst has happened” point. Take care, have a good drive and weekend. Look forward to the pics ❤️ x
@@CamperVanya didn't get out in the end, kept busy with baking and then a nap!! The LONG academic holiday finished today. Dunno about you but I don't get on with these long enforced holidays, though it'll be better when I can just drive away from them. 😁💕
I 100% agree with all what you say and I often repeat to others when asked about living and parking in a van, all the points you made are for everyone and not just women and yes you made that point at the end lol, ALWAYS when parked up face the way you need to drive just incase you need to move quickly, remember the phone will use more power if the signal is not very good, also iv seen ppl put screen cover on when parked in a lay-by, if you need to get a way quick the last thing you need to do is get them off, I know iv repeated some of what you said so sorry about that and yes imagination is big thing when first starting out in the van... it even kept me awake when I first started...LOL
Awesome video sue 😊🚐really enjoyed this 🤩sorry for being quiet recently we’ve been filming in New Zealand so haven’t been on social media much lately ❤❤
Hi guys, thanks for watching. No worries, I’ve been quiet myself just recently too. A lot on but getting away for a week at the end of the month. CANNOT WAIT! Hope you’re both keeping well and enjoying the filming. Take good care ❤️❤️🚐
Great advice. I always think about Getaway Geese when they started wild camping, I think it’s Stu! He was so anxious at first and now they go all over and are so confident. I know it sounds ridiculous but I’m not even sure I would feel, confident to camp in a campsite on my own. I think it’s more about driving, parking and setting up the bigger van. My three little delinquent dogs are also a bit of a handful 😂. I’ve finally booked a campsite for next week so I can test out my new van to make sure everything is working OK. I’ve dragged my feet a bit because I lost my mum and then I lost my dad just 8 weeks later and everything has been in a bit of a spin but I think just this week I’m feeling a bit better so I made the effort and booked the campsite, I’m feeling quite excited. I had to do it because next month we’re going to Poshcats rally and then in June it’s Hermanfest so lots to look forward to. Thanks for sharing another great video, I always enjoy seeing what you’ve been up to.
Thanks Sylvia. I’m glad this video wasn’t as disappointing as last week’s 😆. I commented on one of Stew and Jane’s vlogs just how their confidence growth was showing. I think we all get there eventually, it’s still very new to me. Im sorry you’ve had such a tough time but glad to hear you have so many good times lined up. Take care and thanks for watching 😊

Great video. Happy camping 🥰
Hi Mags, thanks for watching & commenting. We’re similar in our set ups and behaviours. These little things certainly add to confidence when out and about solo don’t they. Happy & safe travels 😊 x
@@CamperVanya Safe travels too Sue. I am off to Ireland soon...🥰
@@mags9981 Oh wow, which area? We visited Northern Ireland Wild Atlantic Way back in 2019. Would love to return. Stunning.
@CamperVanya - Solo Van Life UK I have family in Mayo and Wexford. However I am taking Mum on a memory tour for her. Sailing from Stranraer to Larne. Then Sailing home Dublin to Holyhead. A couple of weeks of travelling.
Hat tipping going on over here. Thank you.
Wave and thumbs up going on over here. Thanks Evelyn 😊
Thank you, Sue, for such a reassuring video - it is really much appreciated!
You’re very welcome Helen 😊
Great advice. This is all what I do when I go car camping.
It’s worked so far 🤞🏻. Happy and safe travels to you.
Wondered where you had gone, good to see you back. Hope you have loads of adventures planned for this year. Take care 🚐
Thank you. Still definitely here and itching to get back in the road. Take care too 😊👍🏻
This is just so useful Sue.
When we get our van, we won’t be used to staying out in remote places and we will look back on your tips here.
A fantastic reference point for others from someone who has been there and got the t shirt.
Plus we will see if we can find any of those martial arts classes for Clonk😃
Brilliant vid 👍👏👏👍👏🙏👏👏👍
That’s great to hear. I’m really glad you found it useful. I think you would be wise to try to master the Clonk 👍🏻👍🏻😄

Thank you for a really sensible bunch of things to think about safe travels x
Cheers Jo, good to address I think then we can get on with enjoying ourselves. Safe travels to you too 😊 x

Hi Sue, all good common sense 👍enjoy yourself and stay safe xx
Thank you! You too 😊👍🏻

All good stuff and pretty much common sense!
Sound tips and advice 👍.
Cheers Nik 👍🏻
Good point, about fuel. We never have less than half a tank of diesel, in the van.. Talking about moving from a dodgy location.....the times we have moved from a place that turned out to be dodgy....As you say....if the red flag goes up, move first, as last... People in cars, acting oddly.... Just move... - Dawn x
You just get a feeling sometimes don’t you x
Hi Sue, loved your tips, a great video, thank you for sharing x Julie and Tony
Hi. Thanks for watching and commenting 😊👍🏻 x
Great advise Sue , your so right sometime we get inside our own heads as always great Vlog, your looking well xx
Thanks very much 😊 x
Some really sound advice Sue. We both think you are a star going to all the places you go and we keep saying we must try wild camping. I have been a bit nervous about wild camping given some of the problems folks have had where vans aren’t welcome. I try and avoid hassle as get enough of that at work in the week 😂 I would love to try it but want to get an outstanding job of CCTV fitted first for that extra peace of mind.
Some great tips and advice, hopefully soon we will brave it as we are inspired at the beautiful places you visit. I would quite happily wild camp on Arran (away from the towns)
Have a fantastic weekend, all the very best, David & Rachel 👍
Great video.
Thanks, glad it’s useful 👍🏻
Great Advice Sue, we have rule 1, which means if one of us is uncomfortable, usually me, we move on. David always has a few extra spots in case our chosen one is busy or we don't like it... thanks for the great video, hope you are well and out and about enjoying the spring weather.. one day sunny next day wet up here anyways. Take care my friend xx
Thanks Lindsay it’s good to have these routines isn’t it, then we can sit back and enjoy it. Have a great weekend wherever it takes you xx

Ey up Peter, the road is calling!!
Great video Sue. Very useful tips x
Thanks Annie x
That was so useful, thanks very much. I'm single and passed Gods use by date, so I need as much help as I can get. 😅 One question I can't get to the bottom of is - park up, plenty of space around you, in the morning, a camper right next to you with still plenty of space available....naught as queer as folk! Carry on enjoying your camping and waiting for your next vlog.
This made me laugh Jeff. It was one of Bri’s pet hates too 😆. Maybe it’s a ‘safety in numbers’ thing 🤷🏻♀️
Great video and good advice Sue. Good to know about the ‘Clonk’ manoeuvre ! Take care!
It’s a great move to have in your self-defence tool kit Linda 😆👍🏻
Not a good idea to have “weapons” of any sort in a van but I used to keep a can of Raljex in the cupboard above the sliding door. I did suffer from cramp so it was needed and it smelt dreadful if accidentally sprayed on clothes. You have to be very careful not to get it near to eyes as it can cause temporary blindness. Another trick is to record a large dog barking on your phone and play it back repeatedly as needed.
Oh I like the recording idea
Weapons with intent is a definite no-no isn’t it, so we do have to get creative with the possibilities of our everyday on board items!
I forgot to add. Stay safe Sue.
I've never had any trouble apart from once parking in a dogging site
I always say to friends same as you that I feel safer in the middle of nowhere
There seem to be a few people stumbling upon dogging sites 😳
Brilliant, thanks for the feedback. Always good to hear from those full timing who know the real experience! 😊👍🏻
I was sure you was going to say a pack of rottweilers and a 12-bore. Joking aside, it's a shame this is something we need to consider. Great video👍
Hehe I’d need a bigger van for the Rottweilers 😆. Happy travels guys 😊
that i useful -
Glad it helped 👍🏻
clonk😂loving it
Don’t attempt it without professional training 😆
Hi Sue, great video. What's the best way to get in touch with you? Would love to look at working together
Hi there, thanks for the feedback. My contact details are in the ‘About’ section.
