  • On the Second Sunday in Lent, the choir sang Herbert Howell's iconic setting of the Magnificat, Collegium Regale, written for King's College Cambridge in 1944. The choristers always look forward to singing this service with it's extraordinary and soaring setting of the "Gloria patri" text.
‘… if I made a setting of the Magnificat, the mighty should be put down from their seat without a brute force which would deny this canticle’s feminine association...Only the Gloria should raise its voice.’
    -Herbert Howells (1892-1983)

Now that the vicissitudes of age are upon me, I reflect on what remains vividly in my heart....music, which I consider to be as important to worship as other elements. Thank you for your contribution to my daily life. Now that we can settle down to the realities of genteel poverty, I will shortly become a contributing member of St. Thomas. Thank you for your service!
