  • I engaged the last child of Legendary Yusuf Olatunji, Al-Monsoor Olawale Yusuf Olatunji on my radio show, Agbaletu. He opens up on the research he’s done so far to know the factual history of Nigeria’s Indigenous Sakara music.
    Enjoy.

Baba Legba was a great musician, his music was philosophical, proverbial and educative.

Very rich an educative interview. Yusuf Olatunji is fortunate to have a son like him. I am a great fan of Baba Legba. Interestingly, I lived in Abeokuta for about 10 years and I never gave thought to his kind of music but after leaving Abeokuta, during my NYSC, anytime I heard Yusuf Olatunji, I became 'home sick'. Today, i have virtually all his music and i never tire listening to them. His music is rich in Yoruba philosophy, and it's the best native blues imaginable to me.
Decades after Baba Legba's death, his music still rules the air waves and i hope his estate still receives royalties due.
He mentioned his father's music recorded in the 1930s. He should kindly put them on TH-cam for the benefit of the public and also to perpetuate them.

Gboyega lawal said sakara started in Lagos island. One nupe man at agarawu selling animal skins, after a day work and playing goje in the evening and later joined by some boys in the area.later abibu oluwa started from there.Gboyega lawal played some sakara in ibadan.Gboyega lawal was a TV presenter .Tunji Olalekan said the first sakara musician in abeokuta was called kekenke.you can called Tunji Olalekan of radio Nigeria gra ikeja will give you details

Great interview Dele, what an intelligent guy. but you should have played 'yegede' released around 1972 before he was born. Baba legba praised his six wives and seven children in the album(side A). Please listen to it. Are they not his biological children? just wondering though ..... I learnt Baba Legba was the first musician to ride Mercedes benz in Nigeria. RIP Pa Yusuf Olatunji Ajao, Baba Tajudeen, awo Durowoju. Kudos to Agbaletu.

My exact thought. By the logic of revising history he's not qualified based on his age to be an authority on this issue. The second thing that can qualify him is him sharing his exact sources, when this history was related, where it was related, the circumstance and distinctively verified by other parties other than him.

@Agbaman one thing i dont like about this man is the way he talks like he is an authority in the field. as if those events happened in his front...Dude was three when your dad died....It would be nice if he said based on my finding this is so and so....but instead he is busy talking as if it happened right in his front....For example talking of cash madam, he would have just said 'They said she is a generous woman' or she told me this and that....And to be candid Yusuf Olatunji was far bigger than S. Aka....But in terms of composition or better still infusing deep yoruba adage in composition S. Aka outranks Baba Legba

I agree with you. Tales is accurate description of his stories, but lies is incorrect. He is a young man proud of his father, and he took all the stories that some people gave him without verification. He is too biased to discuss objectively on the topic.
