      @ransum_ 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      the 10% fee valve gets on case sales is SIGNIFICANTLY less than if the person took that same amount of money and bought more keys. Imagine you want to open $50 worth of fracture cases right now. Valve makes about $37 from that 50 (2.49*14 + 0.1*0.71*14). If the cases were 3 cents like they used to be, valve makes $45 from the same 50 (2.49*18 + 0.01*18). Scale this up to tens of millions of cases and valve is losing 8 figures per month because of case prices.

    • @DebasedAnon
      @DebasedAnon 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@ransum_But then you also need to take into account that more expensive cases make the skins in them more expensive which also get traded on the steam market constantly with Valve taking their cut.
      Also the skins, and cases, generate money multiple times each from being traded back and forth vs the 1 time key use.
      The money Valve is using is nowhere near as huge as people assume it is and on the flipside its significantly inflating skin prices and thereby incentives to open cases hence why all the case opening peaks were recently when the cases were at their highest prices as well.
      Dumbing it down to "Case key > Market cut" ignores so many variables its beyond laughable.

    • @zettour.
      @zettour. 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ransum_ Except changing the price of cases doesn't change supply. Fundamentally, the only thing that matters isn't the price of the case, but the supply and demand of the case. Currently, even with with record high case prices, demand is vastly outpacing supply as is. All lowering case prices will do is cause demand to skyrocket without adequate supply and the case market will overheat, leading to scarcity as case prices soar again. What Valve should actually do is increase the supply of cases, which will automatically lower case prices as well. Since they make a fixed amount on each case opening anyway, the lower case prices, which is typically bad for profit, doesn't matter to Valve nor does higher case prices.
      Think of it this way. Even if cases were cheaper, how would that lead to people buying more keys? Keys are in unlimited supply after all and their demand is tied directly to cases since that's their only purpose. It's a different story if CSGO had massive oversupply of cases that aren't being opened because of artifical price inflation (since an oversupply would cause low case prices in the first place), but that's not what's happening.
      Also, their marketplace fee makes a ridiculous amount most likely. They want people to trade as much as possible because they make money off of every trade on the marketplace. If anything, they'll lose money if case prices suddenly dropped tomorrow since that reduces the fee they get from people trading cases on their marketplace and their revenue will dry up along with the case supply (since price would be far too low).

    You also need to take into account the inflation the case prices cause to the skins, which in return yield higher tax revenues from steammarket sales, which are a huge part of Valve's profit margins as well, not just keys. This video takes a very one dimensional perspective if you ask me, it kind of assumes the skins will hold same value if the cases would be monopolized by Valve.

      The price will obviously drop the more cases will drop/be oponed. The Tax is a fixed % tho, meaning there will be just more sales total for the skins as more people will open cases and want to sell their skins. If there are 10 x 300 dollar sales a day or 100 x 30 dollar sales gives them the same amount of Tax. We can only speculate what would be better for valve without spending a lot of time reasearching marketdata.

    What if Valve continued dropping cases but also sold them in shops at a flat value, like $0.99 USD, and lowered the price of keys to balance out the price of the case to, for example, $1.99 USD?
    It would balance it very well in my opinion.
    People getting their case drops would still be opening them and likely even doing it more because of the reduced key price. The community market would continue to thrive due to cases getting sold by people who don't want to open them, netting the players almost a dollar for every case drop. The case investors might be mad initially, but if Valve continues to cycle out cases as new ones come out, the cases that get removed from the shop would be solid investments for those investors.

    While it lowers the amount of cases opened - The high price of cases is also relevant to the high prices of skins. Every time skins are traded over the steam market Valve are still essentially making another Keys worth in profit, sometimes a lot more.
    I absolutely have no idea on the numbers, but Valve definitely still make A LOT of money even when people don't open every case they get as a drop, Valve make more money when people sell that case to the next person in a taxed transaction, only for that next person to also open the case, or flow the case back into the market for another transaction fee.

    I feel like this is flawed logic. The prices are only so expensive BECAUSE a lot of people are opening an unusually high ammount of them so the sellers are able to charge more for it. The idea that valve won't get the $2,50 if the person who gets dropped the case decides to sell it instead of opening it doesn't make sense, since the person who buys it will open it and valve gets the $2,50 plus the 15% steam tax. Unless there is an extraordinary ammount of cases being horded as a response to the rising prices, I don't see how valve is losing money due to rising prices. Because keep in mind the reason for the high prices in the first place is the high demand! Am I missing something?

Valve could increase the drop rate a little and push down the value of cases causing more to be opened with cases still having a value above 0.01$ but I feel like it's more important for people to be invested in the hype around skins for the longevity of the economy from their perspective.

    i feel like removing the need of a case, making the whole unboxing of one case is very bad for high valua skin collectors since it makes a risk of a skin surpassing their '#1 blue gem' or other rare items much easier to get, since smaller package cost means more sales, means more chances at extremaly rare skins, making them worth less in the long run (coz maybe if a weapon case is opened enough, people are guaranteed to get crazy #1 skins, gems, etc.) right? like after some amount of time you might have thousands of doppler gems, case hardened blue gems, extremally rare skins like #1 stattrack fire serpants, dlores, i feel like its bad for the economy in the long run. a game which made skins really easy to get which i know is payday 2 and in that game, if the skin isn't gold, its worth £0.03 with tax, that means a doomed economy in a few yeas imo

  • @ooczzy
    @ooczzy 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Valve aren't stupid. They know how their economy works.
    By making a case with unlimited supply, it will tank the price of high rarity items.
    This entire theory is just looking at short term. Long term its the item scarcity that makes skins so desirable.
    It's why the dragon lore is so sought after. You have to go out of your way to find a cobble package to open a new one.
    The eye of horus isn't as desirable because you know it is always going to be there.
    They have already tried this formula with DotA 2, back when you could buy infinite battle pass levels and get a box each 10 levels. As a result multiple series of Ultra Rare (knife equivalent in DotA rarity) are 1-10$ once they become marketable.
    Its the most basic concept of supply and demand. If there's unlimited supply there will be no demand.

    The price of opening a case is a factor to the price of skins. If the price of opening a case drastically goes down then the prices of skins in general would crash. Losing a lot of players a lot of money, imagine investing 10,000 dollars worth of skins and it crashes to 5,000 dollars. You're gonna lose a lot of money which means a lot of people would lose trust in the market, which means less people investing to the market, which I guess means less people throwing money for cases even if the price of opening one is lower. I think that's what's going to happen initially, people would lose trust in the system. And people would probably try to liquidate their skins and once they do that I think that's when the market dies. So valve keeping trust with CSGO skins investor is a highly must.
    I think it's like that quote the character Matthew Mcconaughey played on the wolf of wall street. If people keep winning the more reason they invest, which I guess means a healthier steam market. And Valve making consistent money, in the end if Valve loses people who are interested in the CSGO economy then there's likely less people buying their shit. But it is true that valve is making a lot of money from people buying steam keys, so if cases gets too expensive for people to open cases. They're gonna do something about that, but the whole thing is confusing because they messed with the rate of drops, which means they know the supply is gonna go down and prices is gonna go up. So wtf is Valve is thinking, there's probably some meaning behind it but IDK, and there's no way valve did it for no reasons. The only reasons I can come up with why they did it are A. people are more likely to open their cases since it's expensive to get one or B. They're gonna slowly kill the community that opens cases by lowering the drop rate which means the prices will go up then people would be more incentives to just spend money on packages, and just slowly transition from a case opening market to packages.
    In the end all I can think is WTF IS GOING ON.

    Packages 1/4000, Cases 1/400... Yeah I don't see the general player base being cool with them switching to packages. Simply make cases and capsules untradeable or put a decay timer on them of like 30 days.

  • @ZvedeENG

    Shyt theory. Less demand for cases = lower skin prices. Lower skin prices = less tax made per skin purchase on steam market. Only thing Valve is really "losing" money on is non-tradeupable items being >2000$, therefore evading tax outside of Steam.
