Oh absolutely. Hypercapitalism causes us so much anguish and stress. Getting pissed off every time you open your mail? Health insurance company not going to cover that CAT scan or xray? Or due to being so slow you get billed anyways and again, not sure if thwy are going to cover the bill or not? Buying a house? Why does signing some pieces of paper cost $5k? $800 delivery fee on cars? Wtf is that? $25 service fee for every little thing? HVAC guys charging $100 an hour? All this "charge what you want", price gousing, lack of clarity capitalism. Sign up for a gym membership, you want to end it, you have to get a certified check, certified mail and a letter stating you want to end the contract now that it's over. Woops, they claim they didn't get it in time and managed to charge one more months membership despite you mailed it two weeks before the end of the month...they can sign you up for a one year contract on the spot but you to end it you have to call a lawyer to get it sorted out....this stuff happens all the time and has to me among a million other rip offs companies do.

We are social creatures and capitalism seeks to corrupt social relations in a surprising amount of areas

"Power imbalances, not chemical imbalances." A wise direction to explore when you figure that depression can be a symptom of PTSD.

Change the DSM to name Depression disorder to what it actually is... Poverty. We are not suffering from depression, we are suffering from poverty.

The neurotropic theory of depression is the best explanation that this retired psychiatrist knows of for the mechanism of depression. We are hierarchical animals and in an exagerated all-money-at-the-top system like unregulated Capitalism, there are more of us stuck further down the pyramid, where stress levels are higher. The chronic stress hormone cortisol is elevated highest at the lower levels and most likely to cause depression. The anti-depressants restore neurotransmitter levels and counteract the effects of high stress at the bottoms of our status hierarchies. We have created a perfect storm of lower status, less income hierarchical stress for our youngsters and unregulated Capitalism is indeed the main cause! Go Thom, go!

This is what Richard Wolff talks about too! Worker owned and run co-ops . The board rooms need to be phased out !

I'm originally from Europe (Germany) which has a Socialist
System, and life feels to much
    more relaxed and humane vs.
    the Capitalist often ruthless and
    stressfilled lifestyle.

When I read The Jungle I was shocked at how it applied to modern society and living. You will find out that it is still 1906 in many ways.

It seems clear to me that depression is caused by traumatic events which end up provoking maladaptive behavioral responses. A particular individual can be more or less susceptible based on a very large number of factors, but it seems to me that there is always going to be some environmental factor(s) which is responsible for precipitating the depression.

Thom, it's not unregulated capitalism that causes it. It's capitalism, period. It's conditioning that keeps people fom realizing that the same underlying ethic props up both mutations of this market philosophy.
While I aggree with the author's reaearch, I just don't think Co-ops, as advocated by Richard Wolff etc., or UBI addresses the profit motivation, the need for differential advantage among industries in order to make revenue, they don't address sustainability or environmental externalities.
They are better than what we currently have in the states, but they don't address the root problem. When will commentators like this start addressing root causation and stop looking for market solutions to solve problems caused by markets?

I get it. It's better to be in a society where 90% of the people are poor, because all our neighbors are just a bad off as we are. While in an evil place like America if you have a good job that can only afford you to drive a Chevy you get depressed, because you are so jelous of your neighbor who drives a BMW.

Leah Hunter nobody forced someone to go into college debt. If you go into college debt to get a $10/hr job, then you probably should have either gotten a different degree or worked a $10/hr. Job and not gone into college debt. All personal choices.
